YouTube Stream Stalls After a Router Renews Its IP Address: How to Diagnose and Prevent Repeat Drops

A stall near an IP renewal is a clue, not proof of cause. Learn how to distinguish WAN from LAN DHCP, compare logs and devices, and decide when failover may help.

If a YouTube stream stalls just as your router renews an IP address, the timing is a useful clue—but it does not prove that DHCP renewal caused the interruption. First identify whether the renewal was the router’s internet-facing WAN lease or a device’s local LAN lease, then compare the stall time with router logs and test whether other devices or services also lost access. There is no universal lease setting established to prevent this symptom; repeated WAN drops need evidence-based troubleshooting with your router maker or ISP.

What “the router renewed its IP” can mean

There are two separate DHCP relationships that are easy to confuse:

  • WAN lease: The router receives an address from the ISP or upstream modem on its internet-facing connection. A WAN outage or reconnection can interrupt traffic for every device on the network.
  • LAN lease: A phone, TV, computer, or other device receives a private address from the router. A device-side renewal is not the same event as the router renewing its ISP-facing address.

Microsoft’s DHCP troubleshooting guidance describes a client sending a unicast renewal request after 50 percent of its lease time. That timing alone does not mean a connection or YouTube stream should disconnect: the renewal may complete without a visible interruption. A client-side static IP is not a fix for a suspected WAN-side problem.

Find out whether renewal and stall are actually connected

  1. Write down the exact time. Note when the video stopped advancing, buffered, or showed a connection error. Record the time zone and whether playback resumed by itself or only after you reconnected.
  2. Check the router’s status and event log. Look for a WAN lease renewal or address change at that time, but also check for link-down/link-up events, modem reconnection or resynchronization, and router reboot. A renewal entry by itself does not establish a fault.
  3. Check other devices and services. If several devices lost internet access together, that points toward a shared network-path issue. If only one device or YouTube playback was affected, investigate that device or playback separately.
  4. Compare another connection or supported device. YouTube’s general advice for buffering or loading videos includes changing the internet connection and replaying the video, and testing another supported device if the issue persists. This helps separate a home-network interruption from a device or playback problem; it does not diagnose DHCP by itself. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues
  5. Repeat the observation. One coincidence may be incidental. If stalls recur at renewal times, save each timestamp and the corresponding WAN log entries before changing settings.

A NETGEAR Community post describes one R7400 owner’s WAN disconnection on lease renewal. It is an individual report, not evidence that this is a general behavior of routers or that your router has the same fault. NETGEAR Community: R7400 disconnects from Internet on every WAN DHCP lease renewal

Check the network path before changing settings

Inspect WAN, modem, and cabling status

Use the router’s internet or WAN status page and event log to distinguish a lease renewal from a dropped link or modem reconnection. TP-Link’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the internet/WAN IP and separating possible router, modem, and ISP causes; its instability guidance also includes checking cabling. These are diagnostic checks, not proof that a cable change will fix a renewal-related stall. Advice and menu paths depend on the router model. TP-Link router internet troubleshooting · TP-Link unstable-connection guidance

Keep firmware updates model-specific

Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact router model and hardware revision before updating firmware. TP-Link notes that firmware updates address stability problems on specific models; that does not establish that an update will resolve a WAN lease issue on another model. Do not interrupt power during an update, and follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions if it fails.

Do not treat playback-speed advice as a DHCP remedy

YouTube says a minimum connection speed of 7 Mbps is recommended for HD streaming on TV. That is a general TV playback recommendation, not a DHCP renewal fix or a way to diagnose a brief WAN drop. A faster internet plan, Ethernet cable, UPS, or streaming stick should not be presented as a specific cure for a WAN-renewal fault on the available evidence.

What to do if WAN drops repeatedly at renewal

  1. Save the router model, hardware revision, firmware version, ISP, exact stall timestamps, and relevant WAN log entries.
  2. Contact the router maker or ISP and ask them to review whether the WAN lease renewal coincides with a link drop, changed address, or modem reconnection. Share the records rather than assuming the renewal itself is the cause.
  3. Ask for model- and service-specific guidance before changing WAN, DHCP, or lease settings. Available guidance does not establish a universal timer or setting that safely prevents this symptom.

When WAN failover may help—and what it cannot promise

A compatible router configured with a second live internet connection can switch network access to that backup when it detects that the primary WAN has failed. It is a continuity measure, not a confirmed repair for a renewal fault. A change of connection can interrupt existing sessions, so failover cannot guarantee that an already-running YouTube stream will continue without a stall.

Before buying or configuring a backup router, check that the exact hardware revision and firmware support the required WAN, USB, or tethering mode; confirm how failure detection and handoff work; and account for the backup connection’s data allowance and recurring cost. TP-Link’s dual-WAN guidance describes using online detection and moving new sessions to another line after a primary-line drop, which is not the same as guaranteeing existing sessions survive. TP-Link dual-WAN Link Backup guide

One documented example is the TP-Link TL-WR1502X travel router: its Multi-WAN Backup guide describes a primary connection and a secondary backup mode, with switching when the primary connection fails. TP-Link cautions that availability can vary by hardware revision, firmware, and region. Verify those details and local availability before purchase; the guide does not establish that this model will keep a YouTube session uninterrupted. TP-Link TL-WR1502X Multi-WAN Backup guide
