Most eligible YouTube live streams become channel archives automatically; you do not need to convert them yourself. After the stream ends and YouTube finishes processing the archive, find it in YouTube Studio under Content > Live, open its details, set the visibility you want, and save. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so keep a separate recording if the footage matters.
How to save a YouTube live stream as a video
- End the stream normally. If you are using an encoder, stop sending content or end the stream from the Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; the ended stream can be found in the Studio Live tab. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover ending a stream and locating its archive.
- Wait for the archive to appear. YouTube does not give a universal processing time, so there is no reliable exact wait to promise. Check Studio again later if it is not there immediately.
- Open the ended stream. In YouTube Studio, select Content, then Live, and open the stream’s details. You can also manage mobile livestream archives in the YouTube app’s My videos. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
- Set who can watch it. In the video details, use Visibility to choose the audience access you intend, then save. If you want the replay to be public, consider checking it while signed out or from an appropriate viewer account to confirm it is accessible.
- Organize the replay. Add the archive to a playlist, and make separate highlight clips if useful. For eligible mobile streams, YouTube may offer a Short highlight; this is separate from the full VOD.
Is every YouTube livestream archived?
YouTube’s current help guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived across encoder, webcam, and mobile workflows. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. The threshold is platform behavior, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be available instantly or without issue. YouTube does not specify a universal processing time. See Archive live streams.
What to do if the replay is missing or private
- It has not appeared yet: Return to YouTube Studio > Content > Live later. YouTube does not state one processing time that applies to every stream.
- The stream ran longer than 12 hours: The archive may not have been captured. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive when you need a dependable copy.
- The replay exists but viewers cannot see it: Open the video details, check Visibility, select the intended audience access, and save. Verify access from a viewer account if the goal is a public replay.
YouTube archive or separate local recording?
| Option | What it gives you | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube channel archive | An automatically archived replay for eligible streams under 12 hours, managed in Studio. | A stream over 12 hours may not be captured; the archive is not a separate local copy. |
| Local recording | A separate copy you control as a backup. | Requires a recording workflow and enough storage; YouTube does not prescribe a particular drive or recording app. |
YouTube explicitly recommends recording a local archive as a backup. If you stream through an encoder, check during the broadcast that the local archive file is intact and continuing to be written; YouTube’s live streaming tips include this advice. An external drive is one optional place to keep a separate recording, not a YouTube requirement.
Optional: make a Short highlight from a mobile livestream
YouTube may let eligible creators turn a mobile livestream highlight into a Short. The stream must be 10 minutes to 12 hours long, vertical, made with the YouTube mobile app, have chat enabled, not be a screencast, not be marked Made for Kids, and comply with YouTube’s safety standards. This feature creates a highlight, not the full livestream VOD. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance.
