What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To stream at a higher resolution, first make sure your camera, game, or desktop source actually supplies that detail. Then set your encoder’s output resolution, choose a bitrate and frame rate your connection and platform can support, and test the stream. A higher output setting can upscale a low-resolution source, but it cannot restore detail that was never captured.
What “increasing resolution” can—and cannot—do
Resolution is the size of the video frame sent to the platform, such as 1920 × 1080 for 1080p or 3840 × 2160 for 4K. Changing an encoder’s output setting changes that frame size; it does not automatically improve the source image. Check the camera, capture card, game output, or desktop capture first. If it is delivering 720p, sending a 1080p frame may make the picture larger but not more detailed.
Resolution is only one part of perceived quality. Frame rate affects motion smoothness; bitrate and codec affect compression; and an encoder that cannot keep up can skip or distort frames. Platforms also determine which resolutions, codecs, and viewer-quality options they support. In practice, 1080p60, 1440p60, and 4K60 are increasingly demanding choices—not a universal quality ladder.
Choose a target your whole setup can sustain
Before changing settings, weigh the source detail, how much motion is in the video, your sustained upload bandwidth, the platform’s ingest options, and your encoder’s capacity. A talking-head documentary may not benefit from the same frame rate as fast-moving gameplay. A higher resolution can also demand more bitrate and encoding resources without making a soft or noisy source look sharper.

- Wide 80° Field of View & Full 360° Flexibility:Fit everyone into the frame with the 80° wide-angle lens. Easily adjust your view with 180° tilt and 360° swivel rotation. Mount it securely on your monitor, desk, or tripod for the perfect angle every time.
- True Plug-and-Play Simplicity: No drivers, no fuss. Just connect the webcam to your computer via USB and you're ready to join calls in seconds. It offers seamless compatibility with all major platforms like Zoom, Teams, and Skype.
- Complete Privacy with a Physical Sliding Lens Cover: Worried about privacy? We've got you covered—literally. A built-in sliding lens cover physically blocks the camera when not in use, ensuring your private life stays private.
- Built-in Mic & Automatic Light Correction: Communicate clearly with the built-in noise-reducing microphone. The camera also intelligently adjusts the video brightness to make you look your best, even in poor lighting conditions.
- Stay at or below the source’s useful detail. Upscaling is not a substitute for a higher-resolution camera or capture source.
- Consider motion. Fast movement is harder to compress and may look blocky when bitrate is constrained.
- Check the destination’s current requirements. Do not assume every platform accepts the same resolution, codec, bitrate, or latency mode.
- Check whether viewers will benefit from transcoding. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewer formats. Transcoding availability varies by platform; NVIDIA’s guide says Twitch transcoding is guaranteed to Partners and may be available to other channels depending on server load.
Set up a higher-resolution stream in OBS
- Confirm the input. Verify that your camera, capture card, game, or display capture is producing the resolution you intend to stream. Check the capture device and source settings as well as the picture in OBS.
- Set the canvas and output. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the working area for your sources; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution sent to the stream. Set the output to your target only if the source and destination support it. If output is lower than the canvas, OBS scales it down using a downscale filter. For an NVENC workflow, NVIDIA suggests Lanczos at 36 samples; it can add a small encoder-workload cost.
- Choose a supported encoder and stream key. Check your platform’s current ingest instructions. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and can detect resolution and frame rate automatically. Alternatively, create a custom stream key and choose manual stream resolution in YouTube Live Control Room. A platform may reject or fail to offer a resolution it does not support.
- Set bitrate and keyframes for the destination. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its current H.264 recommendations and minimums for 60 fps, and its AV1/H.265 figures, are below. Use the row for your resolution and codec rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream.
| Resolution at 60 fps | YouTube H.264 minimum | YouTube H.264 recommended | YouTube AV1/H.265 minimum | YouTube AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s live encoder settings accessed in 2026; platform guidance can change. Do not apply them automatically to another service. YouTube’s 2160p option does not offer its low-latency setting.
- Measure upload speed and leave headroom. Run an upload speed test as YouTube recommends. The upload connection must sustain the stream bitrate, with capacity left for other applications and household traffic. NVIDIA’s 2025 guide suggests using around 75% of measured upload speed as a streaming bitrate ceiling; that is vendor guidance, not a universal rule. For example, NVIDIA maps a 10 Mbps upload connection to an 8 Mbps bitrate in its example table, with illustrative maximum resolutions that vary by codec.
- Check encoder load. Increasing resolution or frame rate increases encoding work. If OBS reports “Encoding overloaded!” or the stream skips or distorts frames, reduce output resolution or FPS first, then use a less demanding encoder preset if needed. A graphics card with a supported video encoder may help when the existing computer cannot encode the target, but compatibility and capability vary by model. A GPU will not fix a weak upload connection, unsupported platform settings, or missing source detail.
- Test with representative content. Before going live, include the kind of movement and audio your real stream will contain, then watch the platform’s stream-health indicators. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement. Check a test recording or viewer playback too, especially in fast-motion scenes where compression artifacts can be more obvious.
Use starting points carefully
OBS publishes x264 starting points for 30 fps and low-to-medium motion: 3–5 Mbps at 720p, 5–8 Mbps at 1080p, 8–12 Mbps at 1440p, and 12–20 Mbps at 2160p. Those are scenario-dependent x264 examples, not universal platform requirements or replacements for YouTube’s destination-specific guidance. OBS notes that there is no single “best settings” configuration: the right combination depends on the encoder, content, platform, and available connection.

Troubleshoot resolution and quality problems
- The higher resolution is unavailable: Confirm the platform accepts it and check whether manual resolution selection is available. On YouTube, a custom stream key lets you select a manual stream resolution; automatic detection is also available.
- The stream becomes unstable: Compare sustained upload capacity with the selected bitrate and leave room for other network use. Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, then test again.
- OBS says “Encoding overloaded!” or frames skip: Reduce output resolution or FPS. If that is not enough, lower the encoder preset’s workload and retest.
- Fast motion looks blocky: Motion needs more bitrate to preserve detail. If the connection and platform allow it, raise bitrate; otherwise, try a lower output resolution or frame rate.
- The picture looks soft despite a high output setting: Inspect the original source and scaling path before buying hardware. Output dimensions cannot recreate detail that the camera or capture source did not record.
- Viewers cannot choose a lower playback quality: Check the destination’s current transcoding behavior. Viewer-quality options depend on the platform and may vary.
- The stream looks good live but a recording does not: Compare the platform’s live playback and saved video, and check the recording or archive settings separately. A high encoder output setting alone does not establish what quality the platform will make available in a recording.
