Make a useful product video by answering one viewer question, showing the product clearly in use, and supporting your narration with close-ups that reveal the details. Plan the shots before recording, give lighting and sound attention early, edit for clarity, and disclose sponsorships, free products, or affiliate commissions where required.
1. Decide what the viewer needs to know
Start with the question your video should answer: What is the product, how does it work, what does it feel or look like in use, or what should a prospective buyer consider? Choose one main purpose and organize the video around it. This is a practical structure, not a universal script prescribed by YouTube.
Introduce the product plainly, then demonstrate the parts of it that help answer the question. Let viewers see the product operating rather than relying on description alone. If you mention a limitation, include it where it helps the viewer understand the product rather than burying it at the end.
2. Plan shots that make the product easy to judge
Before filming, list the views needed to tell the story. Google’s Production Guide for Effective Ads on YouTube recommends tight framing, showing the product in use, and capturing close-ups and extra footage for alternate edits.

- Establishing view: Show the whole product clearly so viewers can identify it and understand its scale in context.
- Detail shots: Capture close-ups of the features, materials, controls, or connections that matter to the question.
- Use footage: Show a person using the product in a way that demonstrates the point being made.
- Extra coverage: Record additional close-ups and angles. These give you options when editing and can help cover transitions in narration.
Frame tightly enough for details to be visible, but keep relevant context in view. If a surface is reflective or a detail is small, check the framing and light on the camera display before recording the full demonstration.
3. Set up picture and sound
Light the product
Google’s production guide recommends lighting the set and product. Arrange light so the important details are visible, and check for distracting shadows, glare, or reflections. Small adjustments to the product or light position can make a detail easier to see.

Make narration intelligible
The guide also recommends addressing audio early. Record in a quiet space where possible, listen for room noise, and check that narration is easy to understand before filming the complete take. A microphone may help depending on your room and recording setup, but no particular model or performance level is established here.
Keep the camera steady and the frame deliberate
Use a stable phone mount or tripod if your shot needs to remain fixed while you demonstrate the product. Check that the product stays in frame and that your close-ups show the detail being discussed. Choose recording equipment based on your device compatibility, environment, and framing needs; the cited guidance does not establish a required camera, microphone, or lighting kit.

4. Record the demonstration
- Capture the clear overall view. Record the product from an angle that makes its shape and key parts easy to identify.
- Demonstrate the relevant action. Show the product being used while explaining only what the viewer needs to follow that action.
- Record close-ups separately. Get the details viewers need to judge, including any controls or features discussed in the narration.
- Check the footage and sound. Review a short sample before moving on. Confirm that the subject is visible and speech can be understood.
- Capture alternate shots. Record a few extra useful angles or close-ups so the edit need not rely on a single take.
5. Edit for clarity
Build the edit around the original viewer question. Keep footage that demonstrates the product or clarifies a claim; remove repeated explanations and shots that add no useful information. Use close-ups where a detail needs to be seen, and avoid cutting away just as an important action happens.
The cited production guidance supports gathering extra footage for alternate edits, but it does not establish a required video length, editing application, or export specification. Choose those based on the needs of the video and the tools you use.

6. Keep claims honest and disclose commercial relationships
Make claims you can support
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says endorsements should be truthful and not misleading. Do not imply that you personally tried a product if you did not, and do not make claims that require evidence you do not have. Separate what you observed yourself from information supplied by a manufacturer or another source. See the FTC’s Endorsements, Influencers, and Reviews and Advertising and Marketing guidance.
Disclose material connections in the video
A material connection may include payment, a free product, or a discount. FTC guidance says an endorsement disclosure should appear in the video, not only in its description; using both spoken and on-screen disclosure can help viewers notice it. For affiliate links, disclose the commission in the video and near the links in the description. The FTC’s guidance is U.S. guidance: laws may also apply based on where you are and where your audience is, so check the rules relevant to your situation. Use YouTube’s paid-promotion control when applicable
YouTube’s Creator Academy says creators should select the paid-promotion button in video details when featuring branded content, sponsorships, endorsements, or other commercial relationships. YouTube says it displays a disclosure at the beginning of a video when branded content is reported. This platform label does not replace applicable legal disclosure duties. 7. Publish with a clear title and description
Use a title that accurately describes the product and what the video demonstrates. In the description, add relevant context and any links viewers need. Place affiliate disclosures near affiliate links as well as in the video; do not rely on the description alone for an endorsement disclosure.
