How to Keep Audio Continuous When Changing Videos in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist

OBS can loop prerecorded videos in a YouTube Live broadcast, but its playlist documentation does not guarantee gapless audio. Set source visibility deliberately, test every handoff, and separate playout issues from 4K60 encoder and network problems.

For prerecorded videos playing in one YouTube Live broadcast, configure an OBS VLC Video playlist, choose deliberately what happens when its source is hidden, and test every transition with the actual files before going live. OBS documents playlist playback and looping, but does not promise gapless audio or document an audio crossfade between playlist items. If you need uninterrupted sound, prepare it as one continuous audio track or use a playout workflow that supports the overlap you need. 4K 60fps encoder settings affect the stream sent to YouTube; they do not guarantee seamless audio between files.

First, identify which kind of “changing videos” you mean

This guide focuses on the common creator workflow: prerecorded files play one after another as part of a single YouTube Live broadcast. In that case, the handoff is controlled by the media source and playout workflow, while resolution, bitrate, and keyframes control the outgoing stream.

If you mean a viewer switching between separate live broadcasts, the available platform guidance does not establish a setting that guarantees uninterrupted audio across that switch. Likewise, an HLS media playlist is not the same thing as an OBS playlist of separate files: HLS segments are parts of an encoder output, whereas OBS changes between media items.

Set up an OBS playlist and its visibility behavior

  1. Add the media source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the local video files in the order you want them to play. If VLC Video is unavailable, install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS: for example, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. Choose playlist behavior. Decide whether the playlist should play in order or shuffle, and whether it should loop. Check the VLC Video source’s options for what happens while it is not visible—continue, pause, or stop—and choose the behavior that fits your scene layout.
  3. Check scene visibility. If a scene change hides the source, its visibility setting can affect playback. Do not assume that hiding the source leaves playback running; select the intended behavior and verify it in your setup.
  4. Watch the audio mixer. Play each item and observe the relevant audio source or sources in the OBS mixer. Check the end of every file, the start of the next one, and the last-to-first handoff if the playlist loops.
  5. Test the complete sequence. Use the actual files and let the playlist run through every boundary. YouTube recommends a representative test that includes audio and movement similar to the planned stream, followed by monitoring stream health. A private or unlisted test can help you check the broadcast without making the rehearsal public.

These checks can reveal a gap, but the documented OBS playlist controls do not certify gapless playback. There is no basis here to promise that a particular VLC Video setting eliminates a boundary gap.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If there is a gap, fix the media handoff—not the 4K setting

If silence occurs at exactly the moment one file ends and another begins, investigate the files and playout workflow first. Changing the stream bitrate or keyframe interval is not documented as a fix for that source-level handoff.

  • For a continuous music or narration bed: prepare the audio as one continuous track, then arrange the video transitions around it as needed.
  • For overlapping sound between clips: prepare the overlap in an editing or playout workflow that supports it. The cited OBS documentation does not establish a built-in per-item VLC playlist audio crossfade.
  • For an unexpected pause after a scene change: recheck whether the source became hidden and what you configured it to do while hidden.
  • For dropped frames, a disconnected stream, or poor stream health: diagnose the encoder, upload connection, and YouTube ingest separately from the media-item boundary.

Keep the distinction clear: OBS controls the playlist and source behavior; YouTube’s encoder guidance concerns the feed sent to YouTube. A problem confined to a file boundary points first to playout or media behavior. A stream-health warning or connection drop points to the outgoing stream path.

Configure the outgoing stream for 4K 60fps

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations for the stream output, not settings that ensure gapless audio between separate files. YouTube’s current encoder-settings help page, accessed in 2026, lists the following 2160p60 video bitrates:

Video encoding YouTube’s listed 2160p60 bitrate
AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps minimum to 40 Mbps maximum
H.264 35 Mbps recommended

YouTube’s general encoder guidance specifies CBR, video up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use an upload connection that can sustain the selected bitrate, run a speed test, and conduct a representative test stream before an important broadcast.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Set the output to 2160p (4K) at 60 fps only if your encoder, source material, and connection can support it reliably.
  • Bitrate: Use the applicable YouTube range or recommendation above and leave enough upload capacity for a stable stream. The published figures are encoder guidance, not a guarantee of performance on a particular connection.
  • Keyframes: Use a two-second interval as recommended, and keep it at or below four seconds. A consistent keyframe interval can help quality-option transitions; it is not an audio crossfade between playlist items.
  • Audio and motion: Include representative audio and movement in the preflight test, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and messages.

YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for different devices and network conditions. That rendition processing is separate from transitions between the files in your OBS playlist. YouTube also does not offer low-latency mode for 4K streams; 4K uses normal latency.

Do not confuse HLS segments with separate playlist videos

Google’s HLS documentation describes a media playlist as a list of media segments that can be concatenated into one continuous, decodable multimedia stream. Those segments belong to a segmented encoder output. They are not separate OBS video files, and the HLS description does not promise seamless audio when OBS advances from one media item to another.

YouTube’s HDR HLS guidance also sets a limit of no more than five outstanding segments for that HDR HLS workflow. That limit applies to HDR HLS ingestion; it is not an OBS playlist setting and does not solve audio gaps between local files.

Silence begins exactly at a video boundary The media files, playlist order, and audio handoff Test that boundary again; if needed, prepare one continuous audio bed or use a workflow that supports the overlap.
Playback pauses after changing scenes Whether the VLC Video source is hidden and its hidden-source behavior Set the desired continue, pause, or stop behavior, then repeat the scene-change test.
VLC Video is missing or will not work Whether VLC is installed and whether its architecture matches OBS Install the matching VLC build and reopen or recheck the source.

Quality options change, but audio is still discontinuous at a file handoff The distinction between YouTube rendition switching and OBS media transitions Investigate the media handoff; a consistent keyframe interval is not a playlist crossfade.
