Start by copying the exact stream URL from YouTube Live Control Room, confirming that your encoder supports its protocol, and checking that the current stream key is in use. Then verify that outbound TCP traffic to the URL’s destination and port is allowed by both the Linux server’s firewall and any cloud or provider egress firewall. A refusal by itself does not prove that a firewall—or an India-wide block—is responsible.
Check the stream URL and protocol first
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the actual Stream URL from the stream settings. Do not guess a YouTube hostname or regional ingest address.
- If you intend to use RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL using the lock control and confirm that the URL uses the
rtmpsprotocol. YouTube may display the ordinary RTMP URL by default. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting explains how to obtain and verify it. - Check the encoder’s destination URL and port against the copied URL. Change one value at a time, then retry so you can tell which change affected the result.
If the encoder reports a timeout while trying RTMPS, YouTube recommends verifying the URL and checking whether the encoder supports RTMPS. Update the encoder if needed before testing again. A timeout and a connection refusal are not interchangeable diagnoses: YouTube’s cited troubleshooting does not assign the exact message “connection refused” to one definitive cause.
Apply the port 443 advice only to the matching error
For an SSL certificate error, YouTube advises checking the RTMPS URL and trying port 443. Use the hostname and path from your own Live Control Room URL; any hostname or path shown in an example is illustrative, not a replacement for your assigned stream endpoint.
This is an outbound connection initiated by the encoder. It is not a general instruction to open inbound TCP port 443 on the Linux server. If you change a port, make sure the encoder is connecting to the destination and port specified for your stream.

Replace a questionable stream key safely
If YouTube reports an encoder startup error, copy a new stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder, as YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting recommends. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its stream-settings documentation. Never paste it into a public support request, log excerpt, or screenshot.
Inspect outbound firewall rules on Linux
Find which firewall is active
First identify the firewall frontend and policy actually in use on the server. Do not assume UFW or firewalld is active simply because it is installed. Check the system’s existing firewall status and rules using the tools appropriate to your distribution and administrator setup.

Check outbound TCP, not just inbound access
Confirm that outbound TCP connections from the server to the current URL’s hostname and configured port are permitted. UFW supports outbound filtering as well as inbound filtering, and distinguishes host traffic from routed traffic; inspect the applicable rules rather than changing inbound rules blindly. See the Ubuntu UFW documentation.
If the host uses firewalld, check the active zone and its rules. Be aware that runtime changes and permanent configuration are distinct; a temporary rule may not survive a reload or reboot. Consult the firewalld documentation for the relevant version and configuration.

Check cloud and provider egress controls
A host firewall is only one layer. Review any cloud firewall, security policy, VPS control panel, or provider-level egress restriction that applies to the server. The encoder must be allowed to initiate the connection out to the stream endpoint; adding an inbound allow rule does not fix a blocked outbound path.
Locate the layer where the connection fails
These are diagnostic comparisons based on the URL, encoder, and outbound-connectivity checks—not a YouTube-prescribed command sequence. Use the hostname and port in the current Live Control Room URL.

- Check whether the hostname resolves through DNS on the server. If it does not, investigate the configured resolver and provider network before changing YouTube settings.
- Test TCP reachability to that hostname and port from the server with an appropriate network diagnostic tool. A failed test narrows the issue to the route or connection path, but does not by itself identify which firewall or network owner is responsible.
- Review host firewall logs and the applicable cloud or provider egress policy for a matching blocked connection.
- If practical, try the same encoder and stream configuration from another network. If it works there, compare the server’s DNS, route, host rules, and provider restrictions; a single comparison does not prove an India-wide policy.
- Retest after each targeted change. Record the exact non-secret error text, destination hostname and port, encoder/version, and the relevant firewall result.
Do not include the stream key in diagnostic output shared with anyone else. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance separately points to URL/protocol, encoder compatibility, and key checks; success in one layer does not validate the others.

The server’s location in India makes its data-center route, ISP, and provider egress policy relevant things to check. The cited YouTube documentation and Ubuntu firewall documentation do not establish an India-specific ingest host, port, or general block. Do not attribute one server’s failure to Indian network policy without evidence from that route or provider.

Once connected, troubleshoot stability separately
A successful TCP connection does not guarantee a stable broadcast. For stream quality and dropouts after connection, YouTube recommends RTMPS, reliable upload bandwidth, and leaving bandwidth headroom; its encoder troubleshooting and encoder settings guidance address streaming setup. These stability recommendations do not identify the cause of a TCP refusal.
