If your YouTube stream key says it is “already in use,” first find out which app or service is showing the message. The phrase alone does not prove that another encoder is live. Stop any other publisher that might be sending to the same YouTube stream, then copy the current key from YouTube Studio and update the encoder you want to use. If you reset the key, replace it everywhere the old one is saved.
First, identify where the error appears
Note the product and screen displaying the exact message: YouTube Studio, OBS or another local encoder, or a cloud production or multistreaming service. Similar wording may refer to different problems. YouTube’s help pages explain how to manage stream keys and troubleshoot an encoder that will not start, but do not define “already in use” as a universal YouTube error meaning another encoder is active.
A second publisher is one plausible explanation in third-party troubleshooting guidance. A production service may also report an error from its own event or output setup. Treat those as leads to check, not a diagnosis based on the wording alone.
Fix the key and rule out another publisher
- Stop possible competing publishers. Stop other local encoders and cloud workflows that might be sending to the same YouTube stream. Then start only the encoder you intend to use. This is a practical first check, not an official YouTube definition of the error.
- Copy the current key from YouTube Studio. Open Create → Go Live → Stream, copy the key, and enter it in the intended encoder. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for an error starting a third-party encoder is to get a key in Live Control Room and update the encoder: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- Reset only if needed. In the stream settings, use Reset beside the key, then put the newly generated key into the encoder. Update every place where the old key is stored; an old value in another encoder or service will not become current automatically. YouTube says a channel owner or manager must reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. See Manage live stream settings.
- Check the YouTube preview before going live. Once the encoder is configured, check the Live Control Room preview before starting the stream, as YouTube recommends in its live-streaming tips.
If a cloud or production service shows the error
Check that service’s event, output, and binding status, then follow its support instructions. The message may come from the service’s own configuration rather than YouTube’s stream-key settings.

For example, Sardius documents an output-binding error when an output attempts to reuse a key that YouTube has closed out. Its guidance describes a possible conflict when the same key is used for nearby events and recommends separate outputs for secondary or one-off streams. That is specific to Sardius’s documented workflow; it is not a general YouTube rule. See Sardius’s YouTube live output troubleshooting.
What YouTube’s guidance does—and does not—say
YouTube describes stream keys as credentials entered in an encoder so YouTube can accept the feed. Its help also supports creating a custom key for reuse; its Reuse settings option copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. That makes reuse a supported configuration, but does not establish that reuse caused a particular “already in use” error. YouTube does not define that exact phrase on the cited pages as proof that another encoder is publishing.

YouTube’s troubleshooting advice is to retrieve a key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. If third-party software logs into YouTube without using a stream key, YouTube directs users to contact that software’s support. Include the full error and the name of the product that displayed it when you ask for help.
Common symptoms and next checks
- The message appears in OBS or another local encoder: confirm that the encoder has the current YouTube key and stop any other local or cloud publisher before retrying.
- The message appears in a cloud production service: inspect that service’s event and output configuration; do not assume that a key reset will resolve a provider-specific binding conflict.
- A reset did not help: verify that the new key was saved in the intended encoder and replace the old value anywhere else it is stored.
- You still cannot tell what failed: capture the exact message, identify the product and screen where it appeared, and contact that product’s support. Avoid buying hardware as a fix: the cited remedies concern credentials, encoders, and service configuration.
