Set up a continuous YouTube Live stream
- Enable and verify live streaming. In YouTube Studio, complete any channel verification or activation prompts. Check that the channel has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to enter the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then set a clear title and description, visibility, and other available stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream settings, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screen recording. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure and start the encoder. Select the walkthrough file or playlist and configure the encoder to send the feed to YouTube. Encoder controls vary by product; use the settings supported by your specific encoder and YouTube’s current recommendations rather than assuming one bitrate or resolution works for every connection and source.
- Preview before going live. Check the preview in Live Control Room, then open the watch page on another device. Confirm that the picture, framing, and audio are correct before inviting viewers or leaving the feed unattended.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health and listen for audio problems. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality throughout the stream and testing failover if you use a backup encoder. Its live-streaming tips cover advance setup and testing.
- Keep a local recording where possible. YouTube recommends a local archive backup. Confirm that your encoder or recording workflow is actually saving the file and that you have enough storage.
Choose how to run the encoder
Encoder software on a computer
Software is a practical choice if you already have a suitable computer and want direct control over the source and broadcast. The computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain available for the live feed to continue. Plan for power, network interruptions, software updates, and someone to respond if the stream stops.
Standalone encoder hardware
Hardware can send a feed without relying on a general-purpose computer running encoder software, and YouTube supports external video and audio hardware in encoder workflows. It still depends on power, network access, correct configuration, and monitoring.
