SDI Signals Explained: What’s the Difference?

SDI labels identify broad interface rate classes, but device specifications determine whether a particular format will work. Here’s how to check SDI compatibility.

SDI is a family of digital video interfaces, not one fixed resolution or signal rate. SD-SDI, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI and 12G-SDI refer to different rate or standards classes. The label is a useful starting point, but it does not guarantee that two devices will work together: check the exact video format, mapping, link configuration and connection requirements in both devices’ specifications.

What SDI labels tell you

Serial Digital Interface (SDI) carries digital video between production devices. Its labels help identify the broad class of signal a device supports. They do not, by themselves, specify every resolution, frame rate, sampling format or bit depth the device can handle.

SD-SDI is the familiar name for the older standard-definition class. AMD notes in its XAPP1248 glossary that SMPTE ST 259 is often called SD-SDI to distinguish it from later HD and 3G interfaces. HD-SDI refers to a high-definition class, and equipment literature may describe its rate as 1.5G. 3G-SDI is associated with SMPTE 424M in manufacturer specifications. 6G-SDI and 12G-SDI are higher-rate classes used in workflows that may include UHD formats.

These are useful categories, not a guarantee that every device in a category supports the same formats. For example, AMD identifies 12G-SDI as the common name for SMPTE ST 2082-1. That names the standard class; the product specification still determines the formats a particular device accepts or outputs.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How the SDI classes differ

Label What it indicates What to verify
SD-SDI Standard-definition SDI class; SMPTE ST 259 is often called SD-SDI. Whether the device supports the source’s exact SD format.
HD-SDI High-definition SDI class; device literature may call the rate 1.5G. Supported resolution, frame rate and signal format in the device specification.
3G-SDI A higher-rate class associated with SMPTE 424M. Supported format and, where relevant, Level A or Level B mapping.
6G-SDI A further rate class commonly used in UHD workflows. The exact supported SD, HD or UHD formats; the label alone does not establish them.
12G-SDI A higher-rate class; AMD identifies it as the common name for SMPTE ST 2082-1. The exact formats, mapping and link configuration supported by the particular device.

Do not treat the labels as a complete ladder of guaranteed resolutions and frame rates. A product may support some formats in a class and not others. Sampling, bit depth, mapping and single- or multi-link operation can also affect what it can send or receive.

Check compatibility before connecting equipment

  1. Read both device specifications. Find the exact SDI standard or rate and the specific video format, including resolution and frame rate. Check any stated sampling or bit-depth requirements too.
  2. Match the signal mapping. For 3G-SDI, check whether the equipment uses Level A or Level B and whether both ends support the same mapping. For multi-link formats, verify that the devices agree on the link arrangement.
  3. Confirm the connection direction and format support if using a converter. A converter must accept the source signal and provide an output the destination can use. “SDI to HDMI” describes a direction, not universal support for every SDI format.
  4. Check cable suitability for the actual run. Confirm that the cable is rated for the signal rate and intended cable length. There is no single maximum distance that can safely be applied to every coax cable and SDI signal.
  5. Check the connector separately from the signal standard. A connector that physically fits does not prove that the cable or devices support the signal rate and format.

When a converter helps—and when it does not

A converter can bridge supported interfaces, such as an SDI source and an HDMI monitor, when its input accepts the source format and its output matches the display. Product specifications vary: Blackmagic Design lists its Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G as compatible with SD, HD and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60. That is a specification for that listed product, not a claim about every 12G-SDI converter.

A converter cannot make an unsupported source format compatible merely because its connectors fit. Before buying one, confirm the input format, output format, conversion direction and any required mapping or link mode. For fiber workflows, also verify that the converter or module supports the intended rate and is compatible with the equipment at both ends.

Why a signal may not appear

  • Wrong or unsupported format: Compare the source’s active resolution and frame rate with the receiving device’s supported input formats; select a format both devices support.
  • 3G mapping mismatch: Check whether the source is outputting Level A or Level B and set compatible modes at both ends where the equipment allows it.
  • Multi-link mismatch: Confirm that both devices support the same single-, dual- or quad-link arrangement for the selected format.
  • Converter mismatch: Verify that the converter’s direction and supported input and output formats fit the complete source-to-display chain.
  • Cable or run-length problem: Check the cable’s rating for the signal rate and actual installation length. A connector fit alone does not confirm adequate cable performance.

Keep SDI separate from an always-on YouTube stream

SDI describes a video signal interface; it is not a service for keeping a YouTube channel live. If your separate goal is to loop an uploaded program on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and it does not replace SDI equipment. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
