Use FFmpeg in two stages: first rotate and normalize the clips into a single output file in a deliberate order, then send that file to YouTube Live with the correct stream key and encoder settings. Rotation changes video pixels, so it cannot be done with stream copy alone. The commands below assume a Unix-like shell and FFmpeg is installed; inspect your clips first because the right rotation, aspect ratio, and audio handling depend on the files.
1. Inspect the clips and decide what “rotate” means
Before batch processing, identify whether clips need a 90°, 180°, or 270° correction, whether their pixels are already oriented correctly but tagged with rotation metadata, and whether the finished stream should be landscape, portrait, or mixed. Do not apply one rotation blindly to every file: phone footage may use metadata, and clips from different cameras may need different corrections.
Use ffprobe to inspect each file’s dimensions, frame rate, video codec, audio streams, and rotation metadata. For one file:

If a clip is portrait and the final canvas is landscape, choose whether to preserve the full picture with padding or crop it to fill the frame. Cropping can remove property details near the edges; padding preserves them but adds bars or a background.

2. Create an explicit playlist order
A folder does not define a meaningful playback order. Rename files with zero-padded numbers (for example, 01-front.mp4, 02-kitchen.mp4) or create a hand-curated list in the order you want. On a Unix-like shell, this creates a lexically sorted list for simple filenames:
printf "file '%s'n" *.mp4 > inputs.txtReview inputs.txt before proceeding. Shell wildcard order is lexical, not necessarily the order a camera recorded clips. If filenames contain apostrophes or unusual characters, use a carefully escaped list or rename the files to simple names.
3. Rotate and normalize each clip
Rotation is a video-filter operation. You must decode and re-encode the video stream for a pixel rotation; -c copy cannot apply the transform. FFmpeg documents the filters, concat demuxer, and concat filter in its documentation and FAQ. The examples here use the transpose filter: transpose=clock rotates 90° clockwise, transpose=cclock 90° counterclockwise, and two applications rotate 180°.

Process clips that all need the same rotation
For a 90° clockwise correction, use a per-file pass to create consistently encoded outputs. Adjust the input glob and filter for your footage:

doneUse transpose=cclock for counterclockwise rotation; use transpose=clock,transpose=clock for 180°. This example re-encodes video with H.264 and audio with AAC. If a source has no audio, FFmpeg may report that the requested audio stream is absent; omit the audio options for that file or use a workflow that handles optional audio explicitly. If sources need different corrections, process them in separate groups with the appropriate filter rather than applying a single rotation to all.
Normalize portrait and landscape clips to one canvas
For a consistent 1920Ă—1080 landscape stream that preserves the entire rotated picture, scale to fit and pad the remaining space:

-vf "transpose=clock,scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"For clips that do not need rotation, omit transpose=clock,. To fill the full frame instead, use a crop-to-fill scale chain, but inspect the result because it may cut off room features or text. Keep the output resolution and frame rate consistent across all clips before joining them. These filter examples are starting points; rotation metadata and mixed source formats can require a different filter chain.
4. Join the processed files in order
If the processed clips have matching stream properties and are encoded compatibly, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join them without another re-encode. Create a new ordered list using the paths in the intended sequence, then run:

The concat demuxer requires compatible streams. If codecs, dimensions, time bases, frame rates, or stream layouts differ, stream-copy concatenation may fail or create playback problems. Normalize the clips first, or use the concat filter, which decodes and re-encodes the joined result. For complex mixed inputs, follow the concat filter examples in the FFmpeg documentation rather than assuming one stream-copy command fits every folder.

5. Send the finished video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg
In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key. Treat that key like a password: do not paste it into a public script, video, or shared command history. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, with RTMPS for encrypted transport, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four). See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current requirements and recommendations.
For a 1080p30 H.264 stream, YouTube currently recommends 10 Mbps video bitrate; for 720p30, it recommends 6 Mbps. Its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a connection can sustain the stream. Match the bitrate to the chosen output resolution and frame rate, and leave upload capacity headroom.
Once joined.mp4 is ready, send it to the RTMPS ingest address shown for your stream in YouTube Studio, appending the stream key. A typical command shape is:

-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace the ingest URL and key with the values YouTube Studio supplies; do not publish the resulting command with the key visible. This example sets 1080p30-style H.264 rate control and a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to a two-second interval at 30 fps. If you output another frame rate or resolution, recalculate the GOP and bitrate rather than copying these values unchanged. The -re option paces file playback in real time; without it, FFmpeg can read a file faster than real time.
6. Test and monitor before going public
Test the stream before public transmission, preferably with an unlisted or otherwise controlled broadcast. Confirm that the picture moves, orientation is correct, audio is present and synchronized, and transitions between clips do not freeze or drop sound. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement comparable to the planned stream and monitoring stream health and messages. Its streaming tips recommend keeping total stream bitrate within upload capacity and leaving 20% upload headroom.
- Check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream health before sharing the live link.
- Watch the first transitions between clips; mismatched formats can reveal themselves as pauses, black frames, or audio changes.
- Keep FFmpeg’s terminal output visible so you can spot encoder errors or a dropped connection.
- Before publishing a property tour, confirm you have rights to every clip, soundtrack, photograph, and other material included. YouTube’s copyright enforcement can interrupt a stream or affect the channel.
Common problems and fixes
- The picture is still sideways: The source may rely on rotation metadata, or the chosen direction may be wrong. Inspect the stream metadata and test a short sample with the opposite transpose filter.
- Some clips are rotated incorrectly: They do not all share the same orientation. Separate them into correction groups and apply a filter per group or per file.
- Concat reports mismatched streams or the output stutters: The clips differ in codec, dimensions, frame rate, time base, or audio layout. Normalize them to common output properties and use the concat filter/re-encode route where needed.
- FFmpeg says no audio stream is available: At least one input is silent. Handle silent clips without audio mapping or add a deliberate silent track so every joined segment has a compatible audio stream.
- YouTube reports poor connection or the stream buffers: Reduce bitrate or resolution, verify the actual upload rate, and retain the recommended headroom. A bitrate recommendation cannot compensate for an unstable connection.
- The stream is not accepted by YouTube: Recheck the stream key, ingest URL, protocol, codec, CBR configuration, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube Studio and its current encoder guidance.
