A black frame between clips in an OBS property-tour playlist does not have one confirmed universal cause. First identify whether it happens as the playlist advances from one file to the next, or when OBS transitions between scenes: those are different situations with different checks. Then check the source type, its visibility or restart settings, and whether another source is covering the picture.
First identify when the black frame appears
- Between two files in the same playlist: focus on the playlist source and its playback behavior. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents playlist controls for the VLC Video source, but it does not identify a single setting that explains every black frame between playlist items. OBS’s Media Sources guide (January 11, 2022) describes the available source types and settings.
- As OBS changes scenes: inspect the source that becomes active in the new scene. A source that restarts when it becomes active may still be showing black when the transition begins. An OBS forum reply describes that explanation for a particular scene-transition case; it is not a general diagnosis for gaps between playlist files. The forum discussion dates to April 22, 2020.
- Content is missing or covered beyond the handoff: inspect source visibility and order in the scene. A source higher in the Sources list appears above lower sources and can obscure them, as explained in the OBS Sources Guide (January 11, 2022).
OBS version, operating system, source type, settings, and media files can all matter. Without those details, the symptom alone does not establish the cause.
Check which playback source the scene uses
VLC Video source
OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist and depends on VLC being installed. The OBS guide says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the source to appear. Its documented defaults include playlist looping on, shuffle off, and visibility behavior set to stop when the source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible. Confirm the actual settings in your scene rather than assuming they match the defaults.
Built-in Media Source
The built-in Media Source is for an individual media file, rather than the VLC Video source’s playlist. OBS documents “Restart playback when source becomes active” as on by default and “Show nothing when playback ends” as on by default. If the frame occurs during a scene transition, check whether the source is restarting as it becomes active. These settings may help explain a transition-specific black frame; they do not, by themselves, establish the cause of a gap between items in another playlist source.

Media Playlist Source plugin
If you installed the Media Playlist Source plugin, check its version and the state of the list. Its update history records version 0.1.3, dated April 13, 2025, with fixes involving continuation after a transition and a repeated next-video path. Version 0.1.2, dated March 10, 2025, lists fixes involving the last frame remaining after clearing the list and lag with an empty directory. These notes are relevant clues for those cases, not proof that the plugin causes your symptom. See the plugin update history.
Troubleshoot in this order
- Reproduce the gap and note its timing. Determine whether it happens between consecutive files in one playlist or at a scene change. This distinction matters because the documented restart-on-activation advice applies to a scene-transition scenario.
- Identify the source in the Sources dock. Check whether the scene uses VLC Video, one or more built-in Media Sources, or the Media Playlist Source plugin. Do not apply a setting from one source type to another.
- For a scene-transition gap, inspect restart behavior. If the target is a built-in Media Source, find “Restart playback when source becomes active.” The forum discussion suggests disabling it for the transition problem described there. Try that only if your symptom occurs as a scene becomes active, then preview the transition to see whether it changes the result.
- For VLC Video, inspect visibility behavior and playlist settings. Check whether the source stops when hidden and restarts when visible, along with loop and shuffle. Compare your settings with the behavior described in OBS’s Media Sources guide.
- Check visibility and stacking. In the Sources dock, confirm that the intended video source is visible and that a source above it is not covering the picture. OBS’s Sources Guide explains that higher sources appear above lower ones.
- If you use the plugin, compare its version and list state. Check the update history for fixes that match your case, especially a repeated file path, playback continuing after a transition, or a list that was recently cleared. Do not assume an update will resolve a different symptom.
- If the cause is still unclear, record the setup. Note the OBS version, operating system, source type, VLC version if applicable, relevant visibility and restart settings, and a sample of the media files. Those details are needed to narrow down a symptom that the available documentation does not diagnose universally.
What the reported symptom does—and does not—tell you
People have described VLC playlist videos stopping and starting abruptly with a few blank frames between them in an OBS Ideas submission. That confirms the symptom has been reported, but it does not identify a single technical cause. The submission is user feedback, not an official diagnosis or a promise that a particular setting will remove the gap.

Accordingly, do not assume a scene-transition fix applies to a playlist handoff, or that plugin update notes explain a VLC Video issue. Match the troubleshooting path to the source and the moment the frame appears.
