To switch a YouTube Live stream key for a branded property-tour channel, confirm you are in the correct channel and have an owner or manager role, reset the key in YouTube Studio if a replacement is needed, update the encoder’s stream-key field, then send a test feed and confirm its preview before the scheduled tour goes live. Do not reset a trusted key just because another tour is scheduled: YouTube supports reusing a custom key.
Before changing the key: confirm the channel and operator
Open YouTube Studio for the branded channel that owns the scheduled property-tour broadcast, not a personal or similarly named channel. A stream key is a credential the encoder uses to send video to YouTube. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address,” so handle the key as confidential: do not publish it or share it casually. Check the operator’s channel role before starting. YouTube says owners and managers can reset a key; Managers can manage live streams, while Editors cannot reset or delete keys and Viewers cannot view the key under channel permissions. If the channel still uses Brand Account access, YouTube directs users to manage access through channel permissions. Grant the appropriate channel role rather than sharing a Google Account password. Choose: reuse the existing key or reset it

Resetting and reusing are different actions: a reset replaces the credential; “Reuse settings” brings forward the earlier key and settings. YouTube’s documentation does not promise an interruption-free or atomic handoff, so do not assume a live broadcast will continue without interruption during a change. How do I reset a YouTube stream key?

In YouTube Studio for the correct channel, select Create, then Go live to open Live Control Room.

Select Stream. In the Stream key section, select Reset beside the hidden key.

Copy the newly generated key and keep it private. YouTube notes that a key can be reset when, for example, it is compromised.

Where do I enter my YouTube stream key in my encoder?

Open the stream settings for the encoder configured for the property-tour channel. The exact menu names depend on the encoder; the channel’s software or hardware encoder is not specified here.

Replace the existing Stream Key value with the new key copied from Live Control Room. Avoid pasting it into public notes, chat, or other shared materials.

If the encoder also asks for a server or ingestion URL, verify it against the stream’s YouTube settings rather than assuming the key alone is sufficient. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. See YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.

In Live Control Room, wait until YouTube shows the encoder’s preview. If no preview appears, do not treat the stream as ready.

For a scheduled event, click Go live only when the preview is present and the operator is ready to begin the tour.

Test the workflow before the event and monitor stream health during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; these are operational checks for the channel team, not a guarantee that a key change will be seamless. See YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
Troubleshooting a key change

The reset option or key is unavailable: confirm that you are in the channel that owns the event and that your role is owner or manager. An Editor cannot reset a key, and a Viewer cannot view one under channel permissions. Ask a channel owner to review access rather than exchanging account passwords. The encoder does not connect after reset: check that its Stream Key field contains the newly copied key, not the replaced one. If a server or ingestion URL is required, compare it with the YouTube stream settings.

The encoder is sending but no preview appears: verify the selected YouTube channel and stream, then check the encoder’s key and server URL against that stream’s settings. Wait for the preview before selecting Go live; consult YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance if the feed still fails.

The team expected a new key for every tour: a trusted custom key can be reused. Reset only when replacement is warranted, such as suspected exposure or an intentional credential change; use “Reuse settings” only when carrying forward the previous key and settings is appropriate.
