For a YouTube Live product demo, use OBS Media Source to play an individual supported media file in a scene. Choose VLC Video when the demo needs a playlist, playlist looping or shuffling, or VLC’s extended media support. VLC must be installed separately, and its architecture must match OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS documents features and settings, but does not publish a head-to-head performance comparison of the two sources.

Which OBS source fits your demo?

Decision OBS Media Source VLC Video
Best fit Play an individual media file in an OBS scene. Play a playlist in an OBS scene.
Playlist controls The OBS documentation does not describe playlist capability for this source. Offers Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist controls.
VLC installation No VLC dependency is stated for Media Source. VLC must be installed before the source appears in OBS. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Visibility behavior Can restart playback when the source becomes active and close the file when inactive. Can continue, pause, or stop when not visible; the documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible.
Media support OBS lists common audio and video formats for this source. Uses VLC libraries for extended media support; OBS does not promise that every VLC-compatible file will work here.

The distinction is functional, not a documented claim that one source is faster, more reliable, or higher quality. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes playlist support as the key difference: VLC Video can create a playlist, similar to an Image Slideshow. OBS Media Sources

What files can Media Source play?

OBS lists these formats for Media Source:

  • Video: MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
  • Audio: MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.

If the product demo consists of one supported recording, Media Source is the direct fit. If you need a sequence of clips or repeated playlist playback, VLC Video provides playlist controls instead.

Set up a single recording with Media Source

  1. In OBS, select the scene that will contain the demo.
  2. In the Sources dock, add a Media Source and choose the media file. Use a supported format listed above.
  3. Review the source properties. OBS documents Restart playback when source becomes active as On by default, Close file when inactive as Off, and Show nothing when playback ends as On. Change these only to match how you want the demo to behave when switching scenes or reaching the end of the file.
  4. Play the file in OBS and confirm that both video and audio behave as intended in the scene.

Set up a playlist with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC before adding the source. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC so the architectures match.
  2. In OBS, select the scene for the demo. In the Sources dock, add VLC Video.
  3. Add the media items to the playlist and arrange them in the required order.
  4. Choose whether to enable Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents looping on and shuffle off as defaults; choose settings deliberately rather than assuming those defaults suit the show.
  5. Set how VLC Video behaves when it is not visible. The documented default is to stop playback while hidden and restart when visible; the control also allows other visibility behavior, including continuing or pausing.
  6. Test the playlist by switching away from and back to the scene, and check the clip order, playback, and audio.

VLC libraries provide extended media support, but OBS does not state that every file VLC can open is guaranteed to work in VLC Video. Test the actual files you plan to use.

Test before starting the YouTube Live demo

OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing stream settings before going live. For a media-based demo, include these checks in that test:

  • Open the scene viewers will see and verify that the recording or playlist starts as expected.
  • Listen for the media’s audio in OBS and confirm it is not missing or unexpectedly muted.
  • For a playlist, verify order, looping or shuffle behavior, and what happens when you hide and reopen the source.
  • Check the stream settings and do a short test before the live product demonstration. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video is missing from the Sources list: VLC may not be installed. Install it, then reopen or check OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  • The playlist plays only one item or ends: Confirm that all intended items were added to the VLC Video playlist and set Loop Playlist if it should repeat.
  • The source behaves differently after a scene switch: Review its visibility settings. Media Source can restart when active or close when inactive; VLC Video has controls for continuing, pausing, or stopping when hidden.
  • A file supported by VLC does not play in VLC Video: Extended media support is not a guarantee for every codec or file. Test the specific file in OBS and use a supported Media Source format for a single file when suitable.
  • The demo video appears but its sound does not: Check the media source and OBS audio during a test stream before going live.
