To set up YouTube Channel Memberships, your channel must qualify for YouTube fan-funding features and meet the separate membership requirements. In YouTube Studio, go to Earn > Memberships > Get started, accept the Commerce Product Module (CPM) if prompted, then create and publish your membership levels and perks. YouTube reviews the offer before it goes live.
Check whether your channel is eligible
Channel Memberships are a YouTube fan-funding feature, not a setting available to every channel. Before looking for the setup button, check these requirements in YouTube’s current eligibility and getting-started guidance:
- Your channel is accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and meets its fan-funding requirements.
- You are at least 18 years old and live in a country or region where memberships are available. Availability can change, so use YouTube’s current location information rather than relying on an old list.
- The channel is not set as Made for Kids and does not have a significant number of videos marked Made for Kids or otherwise ineligible. YouTube identifies music-claimed videos as ineligible.
- You and, where applicable, your multi-channel network (MCN) accept and comply with the applicable terms and policies, including the Commerce Product Module.
Memberships may not activate immediately after YPP acceptance. YouTube says its review against membership eligibility can take up to two days; treat that as an estimate, not a guaranteed deadline.
Turn on memberships in YouTube Studio
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Earn from the left menu.
- Open Memberships, then select Get started.
- Follow the prompts. On first-time setup, review and accept the CPM when YouTube asks.
If your channel is eligible, the Memberships tab appears in Studio. If it is absent, see the troubleshooting section below before assuming that a setting is broken.

In the YouTube Studio mobile app
- Open the YouTube Studio app and tap Earn.
- Tap the Memberships card and follow the prompts. On Android, if the card is not immediately visible, YouTube’s instructions say to tap Get started in the Memberships section.
- Complete the CPM step if prompted.
Create levels and perks that you can deliver
On desktop, return to YouTube Studio > Earn > Memberships. In the level-and-perk setup box, select Edit, follow the prompts to configure the offer, and select Publish when it is ready. YouTube allows up to six levels, with one to five perks in each level. Higher-priced levels include the perks from lower-priced levels, so build the benefits as a clear ascending stack.
YouTube reviews levels and perks for policy compliance before they go live; its Help page estimates about one day for this review. Do not announce a promised benefit as available until YouTube has approved the offer and you are ready to provide it.

Choose benefits around audience value and your capacity
YouTube lists digital perks such as badges, posts, custom emoji, members-first videos, live chat, members-only live streams, member milestone chats, a recognition shelf, Shorts, and videos. Choose only benefits your audience values and you can sustain. A simple first offer is often easier to maintain than a large menu of perks; YouTube advises considering one to three levels at launch, then adding levels if the offer warrants it.
Because higher levels inherit lower-level perks, account for the combined work of the whole stack. Before publishing, be specific about what members receive, how often you will provide it, and whether the time or production cost fits the proposed price. YouTube recommends asking your community what it values and comparing perk value with the effort required to deliver it.

Set prices and prepare the launch
Membership prices can vary by a viewer’s country or region. YouTube says creators can change a level’s price for new members once every 12 months from the last update; existing members remain at the price at which they joined. Check the price options shown in Studio and avoid promising that every member will see the same local amount.
Before launch, prepare a concise explanation of what each level includes. YouTube recommends announcing memberships in a video, creating an intro video, preparing some members-only content, promoting the membership link in public uploads, and monitoring level acquisition and retention in Studio. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of sign-ups or growth.

Follow the rules for perks and members-only content
Review YouTube’s membership policies and perk guidance before publishing. YouTube lists these as prohibited perk examples:
- Downloads of content that is available on YouTube.
- In-person one-to-one meetings.
- Benefits awarded randomly, such as competitions or sweepstakes.
- Perks targeted at, or attractive to, children.
Members-only videos must be fully original and must not include copyright-claimed material, including claims from music partners. That restriction matters for documentary channels using licensed clips, archival footage, soundtracks, or other third-party material: check the rights and claims on each video before making it a members-only benefit. The creator is responsible for delivering perks; YouTube says it does not take responsibility for them.

YouTube Help states that, on average, 20% of new members join because they saw a members-only content promotion on YouTube Home, watch next, search, or channel pages. The cited guidance provides no study period or methodology with that figure, so treat it as YouTube’s reported average rather than a forecast for your channel.
Troubleshoot a missing Memberships tab or delayed activation
- Memberships is missing in Studio: Check YPP and fan-funding status, age, supported location, Made for Kids status, and whether the channel has a significant number of ineligible videos. The tab appears only when YouTube considers the channel eligible.
- You recently joined YPP: Allow for YouTube’s stated review estimate of up to two days after acceptance. It is not a guaranteed activation time.
- The setup flow stops at terms: Complete the CPM and other applicable terms acceptance. If you are part of an MCN, confirm that its applicable terms are also handled.
- A perk or level is not approved: Recheck the current policies, remove or revise any prohibited perk, and ensure members-only videos are fully original and free of copyright claims before submitting again.
- Viewers see different prices: Local pricing can vary by country or region. Use the amounts and options shown to each viewer in YouTube rather than assuming a single worldwide price.
