Video Encryption Explained: How to Protect Your Streams

Video encryption is one part of a protected playback system. Understand packaging, DRM, EME, license services and the compatibility decisions to test before launch.

To protect a video stream with encryption, encrypt its media samples during packaging, deliver the required protection metadata with the stream, and connect a compatible player to the appropriate key or license service. Encryption is only one part of the system: DRM governs how authorized playback is handled, while browser APIs, packaging, credentials and device support determine whether playback works. No encryption setup can be treated as a guarantee against every form of copying or capture.

What video encryption does—and what it does not

Video encryption transforms media samples so a player needs the appropriate key and a compatible decryption path to play them. A DRM system adds mechanisms for handling licenses, keys and playback policy; it is not the encryption operation itself. Microsoft describes packaging protected content by encrypting it and adding a DRM header that helps a client locate or acquire a license (Microsoft: Content Packaging and Delivery).

Encryption, DRM, packaging and player support are separate but connected parts of a delivery system. A DRM header or manifest entry can identify protection information, but it cannot make an incompatible device or player support a format. Nor should encryption be described as an absolute barrier to recording, capture or redistribution: the cited standards and vendor documentation describe protected-playback mechanisms but do not quantify residual capture risk.

How encrypted streaming playback works

  1. Set the protection policy and create keys. Decide which content needs protection and define how keys and playback authorization will be managed.
  2. Package and encrypt the media. A packager/encryptor encrypts the relevant samples and writes protection metadata into the media or manifest. In some workflows, packaging is integrated with encoding (Microsoft: Content Packaging and Delivery).
  3. Deliver manifests and segments. The stream may contain several encoded representations for adaptive playback. Protection metadata and key IDs must correspond to the material the client selects.
  4. Have the application request authorization. The player identifies an applicable key system and requests a license or key through the application and service flow. In Google’s Widevine Cloud License Service description, a license proxy handles the client request, applies business rules and requests license fulfillment (Google: Widevine).
  5. Decrypt on a compatible client. The client needs support for the relevant DRM system, container and encryption scheme, as well as a valid license/key path. Authorization and compatibility are distinct checks.

EME is a browser API, not a DRM system

Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) is the browser-facing API that lets a web application discover and interact with key systems and encrypted media. The W3C is explicit: “This specification does not define a content protection or Digital Rights Management system.” EME does not supply a DRM service, license server or application authorization policy. The application remains responsible for its own authentication and authorization design (W3C: Encrypted Media Extensions).

The W3C page identifies a July 7, 2026 Working Draft and notes that the latest Recommendation is the 2017 publication (W3C: Technical Reports). Treat the draft and Recommendation as distinct documents when checking normative behavior for an implementation.

How the protection options differ

System or layer Role What to verify
EME Browser API for encrypted playback and key-system interaction; not DRM by itself. Browser support, available key systems, container and scheme support, and application authentication/authorization.
Widevine Google content-protection system; Google documents EME and Common Encryption standards and platform/scheme support. Target devices and browsers, cenc/cbcs support, packaging/player fit and license-service integration. Widevine licensees receive organization-specific test and production credentials; device license requests are processed by a license proxy (Google: Widevine).
PlayReady Microsoft content-protection system with Common Encryption support and version-dependent encryption modes. Client version, encryption mode, packaging workflow and license/header handling. Microsoft’s documentation says PlayReady 1.x–3.x supports cenc CTR; version 4.0 and later supports cenc and cbcs. It does not support cens or cbc1 in the described system (Microsoft: PlayReady Content Encryption).
FairPlay Streaming Apple’s protection system for HLS delivery and playback on Apple platforms. HLS authoring, Apple device support, key-server implementation, production credential eligibility and cbcs handling. Apple says production credentials require approval and describes an approval path for content owners or licensees whose teams provide a consumer streaming service (Apple: FairPlay Streaming).
Common Encryption A standardized encryption format and signaling approach referenced by DRM systems. Container and scheme support, shared key/KID design, each DRM’s license service and actual client compatibility. It can reduce duplicate packaging, but does not make every DRM system or device compatible.

Common Encryption can allow the same content keys to be used across DRM headers for an asset in Microsoft’s described workflow, but each client still needs compatible scheme support and its applicable license/key path (Microsoft: Content Packaging and Delivery). Microsoft identifies Common Encryption (ISO/IEC 23001-7) as a widely used format and says PlayReady deliverables do not include a packager; packaging may be obtained through open-source encryptors or professional encoder companies.

Decisions to make before implementation

Define the target playback environment

List the precise browsers, operating systems, devices, player versions and delivery formats you intend to support. DRM names alone are not a compatibility plan: support depends on the particular client and its container and encryption-scheme capabilities. Google says its platform and scheme support details may change, so confirm current documentation and test the versions in scope (Google: Widevine).

Choose the packaging and key strategy

Decide which samples and representations are encrypted, how keys and key IDs are created and managed, and how protection metadata is written into each manifest or media format. If you want multiple DRM systems to use a common packaged asset, validate the selected Common Encryption scheme across every target client instead of assuming that shared packaging guarantees playback.

Plan the license/key and application services

Packaging does not replace a license or key service. Specify how the player reaches that service, how the service authenticates requests, which business rules apply, and how test and production credentials are separated. For Widevine, Google’s documented flow uses a license proxy, and licensees receive organization-specific credentials for test and production environments (Google: Widevine).

Check platform-specific eligibility and operational needs

  • PlayReady: Match encryption modes to the exact PlayReady client versions you support, and select a separate packaging route if needed; Microsoft says its PlayReady deliverables do not include a packager (Microsoft: PlayReady Content Encryption; Microsoft: Content Packaging and Delivery).
  • FairPlay: Confirm that your organization meets Apple’s production credential approval requirements and that your HLS/key-server implementation matches your deployment (Apple: FairPlay Streaming).
  • Apple sample encryption: Apple’s archived debugging note says Apple devices support cbcs for fMP4 sample encryption and recommends rotating content keys at HLS segment granularity. Because the note is archived, cross-check current deployment guidance before adopting that detail (Apple Technical Note TN2454).
  • Offline, expiry and policy: Establish whether playback needs to work offline, whether licenses expire or renew, and what access rules apply. These are service and policy choices, not automatic consequences of encrypting samples.

Test the whole playback path before launch

A production configuration cannot be chosen reliably from a DRM feature list alone. Test representative content and the precise player/device versions in scope, from manifest delivery through license authorization and decryption. Include successful playback and expected denials, as well as key rotation or expiry behavior if your policy uses them.

Common implementation problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area What to inspect
The browser does not start protected playback. Client capability or key-system discovery. Confirm the browser/device exposes the needed key system and supports the container and encryption scheme. EME provides the API, not the DRM implementation (W3C: Encrypted Media Extensions).
The player finds protection metadata but cannot obtain a license. Application, credentials, proxy or license service. Check request routing, authentication, authorization/business rules and the test-versus-production credential setup. For Widevine, confirm the license proxy is handling requests as intended (Google: Widevine).
A stream works on one device but not another. Scheme, format or version mismatch. Compare the failing client’s DRM version and support for the selected scheme and container against the package; test on the exact versions, especially for PlayReady’s version-dependent modes (Microsoft: PlayReady Content Encryption).
Playback fails after switching adaptive representations. Packaging and protection metadata consistency. Check that the selected representation, key ID and license/key mapping stay consistent across manifests and segments (Microsoft: Content Packaging and Delivery).
FairPlay production playback is not authorized. Credential eligibility or key-server integration. Confirm production approval status and validate the HLS and key-server flow against Apple’s current requirements (Apple: FairPlay Streaming).

Copyright and the limits of technical protection

Encryption helps enforce authorized playback controls, but it does not establish that you have permission to distribute the underlying work or eliminate all capture risk. Secure the rights to the videos you stream and set access rules appropriate to your audience and agreements. The cited vendor and standards sources do not quantify how much copying or capture a particular implementation prevents.

Or let it run in the cloud
