For two people on camera, YouTube’s built-in Go live together feature is the simplest option: one host starts the stream from a phone and invites one guest through a link. Only one guest can appear at a time. If several people must be visible simultaneously, use a more produced encoder workflow or a separate remote-guest production tool, and verify that tool’s current YouTube support and participant capacity.
Choose the format that fits your group
| Need | Best-fit workflow | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Host plus one guest, with a simple setup | YouTube Go live together | Only one guest appears at a time; the host can rotate guests. |
| Several people visible at once, custom camera angles, or external microphones | Encoder-based production, potentially paired with a separate remote-guest system | An encoder supports production hardware and layouts, but YouTube’s guidance does not say an encoder itself adds remote guest calling. |
YouTube describes mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming; its getting-started guidance also lists console streaming. For a controlled panel, an encoder can work with external audio and video hardware. If remote participants must join from separate locations, check the separate guest-production tool’s current participant limit and YouTube workflow rather than assuming the encoder provides guest calls.
Check channel eligibility before planning the event
- The channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the event.
- YouTube says streamers must be at least 16.
- YouTube’s current guidance states a channel can have 10 active streams and each stream key can be used for three streams.
For the latest eligibility requirements, see YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Set up YouTube Go live together
The host can schedule the event on a computer in Live Control Room, but must start the Go live together broadcast from a mobile phone. The guest joins through the invitation link on a mobile device.

Build a multi-person encoder production
Use an encoder when you need a more controlled production, such as several camera sources, external microphones, or screen sharing. YouTube describes encoders as computer software or standalone hardware. Those production capabilities do not by themselves establish a way to call remote guests into the program; verify that a separate guest tool supports the number of simultaneous remote participants you need and can deliver the finished feed to YouTube.
- Choose the production layout and sources. Decide who must be visible at once, which cameras or screens are needed, and how remote guests will enter the program. YouTube identifies external audio and video hardware as supported use cases, not mandatory purchases.
- Connect and check the audio and video chain. Confirm each camera and microphone is assigned to the intended scene or input. If using remote guests, rehearse the separate guest workflow and the final output to the encoder.
- Configure the encoder and YouTube stream. Create or select the event in Live Control Room, use its stream key in the encoder, and verify the destination and preview before broadcasting. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to send video to your stream.
- Check upload capacity against the total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. For example, a 6 Mbps total stream calls for at least 7.5 Mbps of available upload capacity using that margin. Count all outgoing video and audio streams that share the connection.
- Rehearse with the full setup. YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Inspect Live Control Room’s preview and check audio, picture, and guest transitions before the audience arrives.
Use the exact encoder settings supported by your chosen software or hardware and match them to YouTube’s current live encoder settings. YouTube’s streaming tips emphasize testing the complete setup and ensuring bandwidth can carry the total bitrate with headroom; there is no single bitrate setting that fits every resolution and frame rate.

Pre-stream checklist
- Verify the channel, confirm live access is enabled, and schedule enough time for first-time activation.
- Decide whether one guest at a time is enough; if not, verify the external production workflow and its simultaneous participant support.
- Confirm who is hosting, moderating, and able to remove a guest.
- Test all microphones, cameras, transitions, and the guest connection as a complete system.
- Check the outgoing upload connection against total bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% margin.
- Open the Live Control Room preview, and allow the recommended two hours for encoder setup and 15 minutes for the encoder to be running before the event.

The guest cannot join or is not appearing
Confirm the guest opened the invitation link on a mobile device and completed the waiting-room steps. The host must add the guest from the waiting room; only one guest can appear at a time.

The video is choppy or the stream drops frames
Compare the total outgoing bitrate with available upload bandwidth, then reduce the stream load or improve the connection if it exceeds capacity. Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom and test the actual event setup before going live.
The encoder preview is blank or the stream does not reach YouTube
Check that the encoder is sending to the intended event with the correct stream key, and inspect the encoder’s source selection and Live Control Room preview. If you change events, verify that the encoder is not still pointed at an earlier destination.
