There is no single best live-stream widget platform for every creator. StreamElements is a strong choice if you want browser-source overlays with built-in widgets and the option to add custom code. Streamlabs is worth considering if its OBS plugin and widget set match your workflow. Choose by the features you need, how you use your streaming software, and whether each specific widget is still available.
What live-stream widgets do
Widgets are on-screen elements that add information or display events during a broadcast. Common examples include alerts, chat boxes, event lists, stream labels, and progress goals. They can help viewers follow what is happening on screen, but the product documentation cited here describes features—not evidence that widgets increase audience, retention, or revenue.
Both StreamElements and Streamlabs offer widget and overlay tools, but they approach setup differently. The best starting point is the set of elements your stream actually needs, not the size of a feature list.

Choose StreamElements for browser-source overlays and code flexibility
StreamElements is a practical fit if you want to assemble an overlay from built-in components and keep the option of extending it with HTML, CSS, or JavaScript. Its documented workflow centers on an overlay rendered in streaming software as a browser source.

Choose Streamlabs when its OBS plugin fits your workflow
Streamlabs documents a plugin that brings widgets and related features into OBS. If you use a particular Streamlabs widget, first confirm it remains available: the company’s notice named selected widgets for sunset on April 12, 2026, including Super Chat Goal. That date has passed, so do not assume an older tutorial or saved scene reflects current availability.
How to set up an overlay
StreamElements
- Create an overlay in the StreamElements Overlay Editor.
- Add an AlertBox or another built-in widget. Use the custom-code option if you need functionality beyond the built-in components.
- Add the overlay to your broadcast software as a browser source, following the current StreamElements overlay instructions.
- Check the result in your broadcast preview and confirm that the elements you intend to show are visible and working before relying on them during a live broadcast.
Streamlabs
- Follow the current Streamlabs Plugin for OBS Guide to access the plugin’s overlays, widgets, and related tools.
- For a chat overlay, use Streamlabs’ current Chat Box setup guide.
- Verify that each widget you plan to use is currently supported, particularly if your setup depends on an older guide or a specific named feature.
Interface labels and workflows can change; use the linked current vendor instructions rather than relying on menu paths copied from an older tutorial.

What to check before choosing
- Required elements: List the alerts, chat, event list, labels, or goals you actually need, then verify that the platform currently provides them.
- Streaming software: Consider whether you prefer StreamElements’ browser-source overlay workflow or Streamlabs’ OBS plugin.
- Customization: If you need to write or adapt overlay code, StreamElements documents HTML, CSS, and JavaScript support; do not assume another platform has the same capability without checking its documentation.
- Platform and account fit: Check the current vendor instructions for the streaming software and platform you use; the cited feature descriptions do not establish compatibility for every possible setup.
- Long-term availability: Confirm that a specific widget has not been retired before designing your broadcast around it.
- Control workflow: If you want physical buttons for operating OBS, treat that as a separate equipment decision, not as a widget requirement.
Optional: control OBS with a Stream Deck
An Elgato Stream Deck is a hardware control surface, not a widget provider and not a requirement for overlays. Elgato documents OBS actions for scenes, sources, audio, stream start and stop, recording, replay buffer, and transitions. Check the OBS integration requirements for your operating system and setup. Elgato says its OBS Studio plugin for Stream Deck is free on Elgato Marketplace; that statement applies to the plugin, not the hardware.

StreamNeo is not a live-stream widget provider; it is a separate option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. For a documentary channel that wants to loop prerecorded material, it runs the stream in the cloud rather than requiring a home computer to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
