Start with the platform’s recommended encoder bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, then make sure your sustained upload capacity can exceed it with room for network fluctuations and other devices. Bitrate is the stream’s data rate; it is not the same thing as the upload speed advertised by an internet plan.
How to work out the upload speed you need
- Choose your platform and video settings. Decide whether you are streaming to YouTube Live or Twitch, and select the resolution and frame rate you intend to use.
- Find the recommended encoder bitrate. Match your resolution and frame rate to the platform’s guidance, and check that the recommendation applies to your codec. YouTube’s H.264 figures are listed below; YouTube provides different ranges for AV1 and H.265. YouTube’s live encoder settings explains the available settings.
- Allow upload headroom. Your connection needs to sustain more than the stream’s bitrate. Twitch’s general rule of thumb is bitrate plus 30%: for a 6 Mbps stream, Twitch says to allow at least 8 Mbps upload. That is guidance, not a guarantee for every connection or multi-streaming setup. Twitch’s streaming FAQ gives the example.
- Test under realistic conditions. Run a speed test, then test-stream with representative audio and movement. Check the platform’s stream-health indicators while live. Other devices and uploads use the same available capacity.
- Reduce settings if the stream is unstable. Lower bitrate first, or reduce resolution or frame rate, until the connection can sustain the stream. A stable broadcast is preferable to settings that cause dropped frames or interruptions.
YouTube Live H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder bitrates, not internet-plan upload-speed requirements. Treat them as the outgoing data rate for the stream and add headroom before choosing an upload target. The source does not state a publication year; check YouTube’s current guidance before setting up a broadcast.

Do not treat 1080p60 as a universal 12 Mbps requirement: that is YouTube’s H.264 recommendation. Its AV1 and H.265 guidance uses a different range, reported as 4–10 Mbps. Match the figure to the selected codec as well as resolution and frame rate.
Encoder and connection settings that affect reliability
YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube also recommends testing before the broadcast and monitoring stream health during it. These encoder settings do not increase the capacity of your internet connection; the connection still needs sufficient sustained upload bandwidth for the chosen bitrate and overhead.

Twitch
Twitch describes ingest bitrate as the amount of data sent to Twitch. A higher bitrate consumes more available internet bandwidth. Its broadcast guidance recommends CBR where possible and advises balancing video quality against connection and hardware limits. Twitch’s bitrate-plus-30% rule is a general practice, not a guarantee that a stream will be stable on a particular network. Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines discuss bandwidth and stability.
What to do when your upload speed is not enough
- Check sustained performance, not just the plan headline. Run a speed test and test the stream at the time and location you expect to broadcast. A single speed-test result does not guarantee that the connection will hold steady throughout a live session.
- Reduce competing traffic. Uploads and other devices share available capacity. Pause large uploads or reduce other network use during the broadcast where possible.
- Lower the stream bitrate. Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain rather than pushing for a higher quality setting.
- Step down resolution or frame rate if needed. If reducing bitrate alone does not produce a stable stream, try a lower resolution or frame rate and test again.
- Prioritize stability. Twitch explicitly advises against pushing quality to the point that frames drop or the connection is tested at its limits. YouTube likewise says to choose a quality that results in a reliable stream.
