If you speak in an ordinary, noisy, or untreated room, a close-used dynamic cardioid mic is often the more forgiving place to start. In a quiet, controlled room, a cardioid condenser can suit you if you want to capture more vocal detail. Room sound, mic placement, pickup pattern, connection, and gain staging matter as much as the transducer type.
Dynamic vs. condenser: what changes?
Dynamic and condenser describe how a microphone converts sound into an electrical signal. They do not tell you how it connects to your computer: both types are available as USB and XLR microphones. A USB model can combine the capsule, preamp, and analog-to-digital conversion in one device. An XLR mic generally connects through a compatible audio interface or mixer.
| Factor | Dynamic microphone | Condenser microphone |
|---|---|---|
| Room fit | Often a forgiving choice in ordinary or noisy spaces, especially when used close to the speaker. | Best suited to a quieter, controlled space when background noise is limited. |
| Capture character | Can give focused voice capture; the result depends on the specific mic, pattern, distance, and room. | Can capture vocal detail and a wide frequency range; it does not automatically sound better. |
| Connection | USB and XLR models exist. | USB and XLR models exist. |
| Power and gain | A passive dynamic does not need phantom power, but some models need substantial preamp gain. | An XLR condenser generally requires phantom power, commonly 48 V; confirm the model’s requirements. |
| Extra equipment | An XLR model needs a compatible interface or mixer; an inline preamp is not automatically necessary. | An XLR model needs a compatible interface or mixer that supplies the required phantom power. |
These are tendencies, not guarantees. A dynamic mic can still pick up a keyboard or fan, and a condenser can work well if the room is quiet and the setup is appropriate. Manufacturer guidance from Sennheiser and RØDE describes the trade-offs; neither establishes one type as a universal streaming winner.
Which type fits your room and speaking style?
Choose a dynamic if the room is noisy or untreated
A dynamic cardioid mic is a sensible starting point if your desk is near a fan, keyboard, household activity, or reflective hard surfaces. Use it close enough that you can speak consistently into it, and, where practical, point its less-sensitive side or rear toward the main unwanted sound. This is a setup inference from directional behavior and common use cases, not a guarantee that unwanted sound will disappear.

Choose a condenser if the room is quiet and you want more detail
A cardioid condenser can suit a treated or naturally quiet room when nuanced vocal detail is a priority. Its sensitivity can also reveal room reflections and background sounds, so consider what the microphone will hear beyond your voice before choosing one.
Consider how steadily you can stay close to the mic
Close, consistent placement helps keep speech prominent. If you move around or lean far away while streaming, neither transducer type can compensate for inconsistent distance. Check the microphone’s pickup pattern and address its front; for a cardioid mic, the front is the most sensitive direction.

USB or XLR? Plan the connection separately
USB: a simpler computer connection
USB is a viable choice if you want a direct connection and fewer separate components. Dynamic and condenser USB microphones are both available. The microphone may contain its own preamp and analog-to-digital converter, so check its computer compatibility and controls rather than assuming every USB mic works the same way.
XLR: a modular signal chain
An XLR microphone generally needs an audio interface or mixer between it and your computer. That adds equipment and setup, while allowing the interface or mixer to be a separate part of the signal chain. For an XLR condenser, verify that the device supplies the microphone’s required phantom power. Follow the manuals for the specific microphone and interface.

The heavy-duty boom arm maintains distance from your desktop, preventing noise interference, resulting in smoother, clearer vocals during voice-over and streams. (For optimal input volume, adjust input volume via the mic's gain knob in USB connection, or control on your audio interface when XLR connection.)
Check gain before buying an inline preamp
Some dynamic XLR microphones need more gain than an interface provides cleanly. If you hear hiss or other noise when raising the gain, first check the interface’s gain setting and noise floor. An active inline preamp can provide a gain boost and may help in the bus-powered interface situation described by PreSonus, but it is not mandatory for every dynamic mic. PreSonus also cautions about using 48 V with a dynamic mic and an XLR-XLR cable; check the instructions for your exact equipment before enabling phantom power.
Set up the microphone for a stream
- Choose the mic for the room. Start with a close-used dynamic cardioid for a noisy or untreated desk environment. Consider a cardioid condenser for a quiet space where detailed voice capture is the aim.
- Confirm the pickup pattern and speaking side. Check the mic’s manual or markings, then speak toward its front. If it is cardioid, its strongest pickup is at the front, with greater rejection to the sides and rear.
- Position it consistently. Put the mic close enough for steady speech and keep your mouth at a consistent distance. A boom arm can help with positioning and clear desk space; a pop filter can reduce plosive bursts.
- Connect the correct signal chain. Plug a USB model into the computer as directed by its manufacturer. For XLR, connect it to a compatible interface or mixer, then connect that device to the computer.
- Set power and gain according to the equipment. Supply phantom power only when the XLR condenser requires it and the interface or mixer supports it. Set gain so your speech is clear without excessive hiss or clipping; consult the device manuals for their controls and safe settings.
- Test in the actual streaming position. Listen for room reflections, keyboard or fan noise, plosives, and changes in level as you speak. Reposition the mic or redirect its rejection area before buying extra equipment.
Common problems and what to check
- The stream captures too much keyboard, fan, or room sound: Move the mic closer, speak toward its front, and, if it is cardioid, orient its less-sensitive side or rear toward the main noise. Reconsider a condenser in a noisy space.
- Your voice sounds distant or changes in level: Keep a more consistent distance and speak toward the microphone’s intended pickup side. Verify the model’s pattern rather than assuming it is cardioid.
- An XLR condenser produces no usable signal: Check the connection chain and the mic’s power requirements. If it requires phantom power, confirm the interface or mixer can supply it and that the correct setting is enabled.
- A dynamic XLR mic is quiet or hissy: Check interface gain and noise before adding an inline preamp. Confirm compatibility and follow the microphone and interface instructions, especially around phantom power.
- Plosives or desk clutter are distracting: Adjust placement; a pop filter can reduce plosive bursts, and a boom arm can make positioning easier.
