To make a thumbnail from a video, save a still frame that clearly represents it, optionally crop or design that image, then upload it in the platform’s thumbnail controls. For YouTube, the basic path is to export a frame, open YouTube Studio, select the video under Content, upload the image in Thumbnail, and save.
1. Choose a clear frame from your video
Open the footage in a video editor or player that lets you inspect it frame by frame. Scrub to a moment that is sharp and immediately communicates what the video is about. A representative moment is usually a better starting point than a frame that is blurry, mid-blink, or difficult to understand at a glance.
Pause on the chosen frame and save it at the highest useful resolution available from the source. A thumbnail begins as a still image; adding text or other design is a separate, optional step.
2. Export the frame in Adobe Premiere
- Open the clip or sequence in Premiere and display the frame you want in the Source or Program Monitor.
- Move the playhead to the exact frame.
- Select Export Frame. The button may not appear in the monitor by default; Adobe says you can add it using Button Editor.
- Choose a filename, image format, and destination, then select OK.
Adobe also describes using Premiere’s Export mode for high-quality still formats such as DPX, TIFF, TRG, and PNG. For the standard thumbnail workflow, use an image format your destination accepts. See Adobe’s Premiere still-image export instructions (page updated January 21, 2026).

3. Crop or design the image if needed
You can upload the unedited frame, or open it in an image editor to crop, adjust brightness or contrast, or add a short headline. Check that any text remains legible when the image is shown small. Canva documents a workflow for uploading a video snapshot, adding text and design elements, adjusting the image, and downloading a JPEG or PNG; using a separate design tool is optional. Its own thumbnail guidance lists 1280 × 720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, a minimum width of 640 pixels, and a 2 MB maximum, but use YouTube’s current guidance for upload compliance.

4. Match the image to YouTube’s requirements
YouTube’s Help guidance recommends different dimensions and aspect ratios for standard videos and Shorts. Upload limits also vary by device, so check the controls you are using before exporting.

YouTube Help lists JPG and PNG formats and says a verified account is required to upload custom thumbnails. Because platform limits and controls can change, consult YouTube’s current thumbnail instructions before exporting.

For vertical videos, YouTube says a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image still appears in the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms. Also check the crop yourself: the YouTube Data API documentation says an image with dimensions that do not match the required dimensions may be resized without changing its aspect ratio, which can leave black bars.
5. Upload the thumbnail in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content, then open the video you want to update.
- In the Thumbnail section, select Upload file and choose your image. You can also choose from YouTube’s suggested options when they are available.
- Save the change. YouTube notes that the updated thumbnail may take time to appear.
What changes for Shorts?
Shorts thumbnail controls are changing and may depend on account eligibility and rollout. YouTube Help says custom thumbnail uploads for Shorts are currently available through YouTube Studio on a computer and require account verification. In a July 24, 2026 announcement, YouTube said YouTube Partner Program creators could begin uploading fully custom Shorts thumbnails, described three suggested Shorts frames on desktop, and said creators could still pick a frame in the YouTube app on mobile. The announcement also said the full custom-upload feature would expand to more creators over time. Check the controls in your own Studio account for what is available to you.

Choose a frame and any added text that represent the actual video. YouTube Help warns that thumbnails can be rejected and receive a strike if they violate Community Guidelines; examples it names include nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content. Review the current YouTube thumbnail rules if you are unsure whether an image is permitted.
