To live stream on YouTube, first make sure your channel is eligible, then choose mobile, webcam, encoder, or console streaming. Set up the event in YouTube Studio, test your audio and connection, and start the broadcast. For an encoder stream, add the YouTube server URL and stream key, check the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live.

Check whether your channel can go live

YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before the event. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Mobile has additional requirements

For streaming from the YouTube mobile app, YouTube lists a minimum of 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-streaming restriction within the past 90 days, and Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+. Channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have mobile viewer limits, and their mobile stream archives may be set to private by default. These are mobile-specific conditions, not general requirements for webcam, encoder, or console streams. Check YouTube Help: Create a mobile live stream (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Choose the right way to stream

Method Best suited to What to know
Mobile Quick updates or events from a location Start or schedule from the YouTube app; mobile eligibility applies.
Webcam A straightforward stream from a computer with a webcam YouTube describes this as a quick way to go live from a computer.
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, external cameras, or multiple audio/video sources Streaming software or hardware sends a feed to YouTube; you configure it with the stream URL and key.
Console Gameplay captured directly from a supported modern console YouTube directs users to the console maker’s instructions; controls vary by console.

The method descriptions above are from YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming. Choose based on the device you already have, whether you need screen sharing or overlays, and whether your production uses external equipment.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Prepare the event in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. To schedule a broadcast, use the Manage tab and create a scheduled stream.
  2. Enter the stream title and description, select the audience and privacy settings, then save. A scheduled stream can have a shareable page, and viewers may set reminders. Verify privacy rather than assuming the stream is public: YouTube may apply different default privacy settings based on age.
  3. If using an encoder, copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room and enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen.

Exact labels and page layout can change. YouTube’s setup and scheduling guidance is in YouTube Help: Create a live stream on a computer with an encoder and YouTube Help: Create a mobile live stream.

Test audio, picture, and connection

  • Run an unlisted test stream and check both what viewers see and what they hear. Confirm that speech is clear, the picture is framed correctly, and any screen or game audio is included.
  • Choose a quiet location and plan the segments of the broadcast. Unlike a recorded video, a live stream does not give you multiple takes; YouTube notes, “The difference between live streaming and filming a video is that with live streaming you cannot have multiple takes.”
  • For a computer stream, YouTube recommends Ethernet and advises checking that outbound network capacity can sustain the stream bitrate.
  • On mobile data, YouTube gives about 10 MB per minute as a rule of thumb. Actual use varies with the stream and connection.
  • A tripod or similar accessory can reduce camera shake, and a microphone can improve audio, but neither is a prerequisite; YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started.

These testing and setup suggestions are from YouTube Help: Filming tips – Live (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Protect your stream and channel

Broadcast only material you have the rights to use, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube lists a copyright strike during an active live stream and a match with another copyrighted live broadcast among triggers that can restrict live-streaming access. If your channel is restricted, do not try to bypass the restriction by streaming from another channel. Review YouTube Help: Live stream restrictions before broadcasting material whose rights are unclear.

Troubleshoot common problems

Problem Likely cause What to do
You cannot start a stream Verification is incomplete, a restriction applies, or first-time activation is still processing. Check channel verification and live-streaming status. If enabling live streaming for the first time, allow up to 24 hours; do not wait until the event begins.
The mobile app does not offer live streaming The channel or device may not meet mobile-specific requirements. Check subscriber count, verification and restriction status, plus the Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ requirement. If your channel has under 1,000 subscribers, viewer limits or private archive defaults may also apply.
The encoder preview does not appear The encoder may not be sending, or the server URL or stream key may be wrong. Confirm the encoder is streaming, then compare its destination and key with the values in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
Audio or video looks wrong A source, framing, microphone, or encoder input may be misconfigured. Run an unlisted test, inspect the preview, check each audio/video source, and correct the issue before going live.
The stream is unstable The connection may not have enough reliable outbound capacity for the selected stream bitrate. Test the network against the bitrate and use Ethernet for a computer stream when possible.
A live stream is restricted or interrupted over rights concerns Copyrighted material or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast may trigger restrictions. Use content you have rights to broadcast and consult YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance. Do not evade a restriction by switching channels.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a different option from operating a live camera, webcam, or encoder feed: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
