For a virtual background in OBS or Streamlabs, a documented option is NVIDIA Broadcast: apply blur or background replacement to a webcam, then select its virtual camera in your streaming software. It requires Windows and a supported NVIDIA RTX GPU, so it is not a universal solution. If your computer does not meet those requirements, OBS and Streamlabs have different platform and workload needs; neither vendor’s basic requirements guarantee smooth streaming on a particular setup.
How the NVIDIA Broadcast virtual-background workflow works
NVIDIA Broadcast processes webcam input and exposes it as a virtual camera. Your streaming application then uses that processed camera as its source. NVIDIA lists both OBS Studio and Streamlabs among compatible applications.
- Install NVIDIA Broadcast on a compatible Windows computer and select your webcam as its camera input.
- In Broadcast, choose a background effect such as blur or replacement and confirm that the processed camera preview is visible.
- In OBS, add a Video Capture Source and choose Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast). In Streamlabs Desktop, add a Video Capture Device and select NVIDIA Broadcast.
- In Streamlabs, make the camera resolution match in Streamlabs Desktop and NVIDIA Broadcast. NVIDIA notes that a mismatch can prevent the camera from displaying correctly.
- Check the result in the streaming software’s preview, then test a private or otherwise non-public stream before relying on it live.
Menu wording can differ between versions. If a device name is not shown, first confirm Broadcast is open and its processed camera is available, then reload the camera source in the receiving app.
Check requirements before choosing software
NVIDIA Broadcast
NVIDIA’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, describes Broadcast as a Windows 10 64-bit app requiring an NVIDIA RTX-class GPU. Its listed supported starting models are GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, and TITAN RTX, or higher; the FAQ also lists 8 GB RAM, driver 570.xx or higher, and an Intel Core i5 8600 or Ryzen 5 2600 or higher as recommended CPU guidance. Virtual Key Light and Studio Voice have a higher requirement: an RTX 3060 desktop GPU. Requirements and version availability can change, so check NVIDIA’s current Broadcast FAQ and product page before installing.

OBS Studio
OBS lists basic compatibility for Windows 10 or 11 with DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics, macOS 11 or later with OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics, and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 plus X or Wayland. Those are not performance guarantees: OBS says the ability to stream or record depends on factors including encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements.
Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs’ 2026 requirements page lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 or later and 8 GB RAM as minimum guidance. It recommends 16 GB or more, an SSD, and stronger CPU/GPU hardware for demanding content. It gives 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms as guidance, not a promise that a particular computer or connection will perform well. See Streamlabs’ system requirements.

There is no established matched-hardware comparison here that proves one method produces better-looking backgrounds or uses fewer resources. Treat the table as a compatibility and setup comparison, not a performance ranking.
Troubleshooting a missing or gray virtual camera
- Broadcast camera is missing from the source list: check that NVIDIA Broadcast is installed and running and that its camera input is selected. Remove and re-add or reload the camera source in OBS or Streamlabs after changing Broadcast settings.
- Streamlabs shows no camera image: verify that the resolution selected in Streamlabs Desktop matches the resolution in NVIDIA Broadcast, then reload the Video Capture Device.
- Camera output appears gray: check the input camera and processed preview in Broadcast, then reload the receiving app’s camera source. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting material covers virtual-device visibility and gray output; exact steps depend on the app and operating-system version. Consult NVIDIA’s support information.
- OBS virtual-camera problems on macOS: OBS documents a system-software permission issue for its own virtual camera. That is distinct from selecting NVIDIA Broadcast’s camera; follow the applicable OBS virtual-camera troubleshooting for your macOS version.
- Game performance worsens while streaming: NVIDIA has documented that Broadcast can affect game performance when gaming and streaming at the same time, but does not establish a universal frame-rate cost. Test the actual game, scene, and encoder; if needed, reduce scene or game load and prioritize a stable stream.
Practical checks before going live
- Confirm your camera works in Broadcast before opening or configuring the streaming scene.
- Inspect the processed preview for edge artifacts, lighting changes, and unexpected objects before using replacement backgrounds.
- Test the complete scene with the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, and game or other demanding application running.
- Check that the streaming application is using the processed camera, not the unprocessed webcam.
- Review the platform’s current live-stream rules and ensure you have rights to all footage, music, and other material in the program. A background effect does not grant permission to use copyrighted content.
