But there is no single platform ranking that cleanly predicts where a new creator will succeed. The totals below cover different periods, platforms, and categories; the Q2 2026 comparison notably added YouTube Live alongside YouTube Gaming for the first time.
How much live streaming did audiences watch?
Stream Hatchet’s 2025 annual summary, published by GameSquare, estimated 36.4 billion global live-streaming hours watched, 6% above 2024 and close to its reported 2021 peak of 37.1 billion hours. For Q1 2026, Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet reported 21.49 billion hours watched across the platforms tracked in their report, up 2.83% quarter over quarter. The same report counted 330.3 million hours streamed and 11.75 million unique channels. These are different measures: hours watched describe audience viewing, hours streamed describe broadcast activity, and unique channels count channels that broadcast. What changed in Q2 2026 platform figures?
Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet’s Q2 report recorded 12.97 billion YouTube Live hours watched, 60.3% of the report’s tracked total. It also reported 4.52 billion hours for Twitch, 1.79 billion for YouTube Gaming, and 1.34 billion for Kick. YouTube Live was added alongside YouTube Gaming for the first time in this report. YouTube Live and YouTube Gaming are not interchangeable categories, and the scope change makes direct comparisons with earlier gaming-only YouTube totals misleading.

Do average viewers per channel show where creators can grow?
In the Q2 2026 report, average viewers per channel were about 308 for YouTube Live, 85 for Kick, 78 for YouTube Gaming, and 23 for Twitch. These report-level averages indicate how viewing was distributed relative to the channels counted in the dataset. They are not a forecast of the audience a new channel can expect, and a larger average does not establish that discovery or growth is easier on that platform.

Which live formats and genres drew attention?
Gaming remains a major part of viewing
Stream Hatchet’s 2025 annual summary identified first-person shooters as the most-watched gaming genre, with 4.6 billion hours watched. That figure concerns gaming content and should not be confused with total live-streaming hours across all formats.

Non-gaming formats matter too
The same annual summary reported that Just Chatting grew 25% and IRL grew 19%, and that non-gaming content accounted for 22% of Twitch viewership. Q2 2026 reporting also identified non-gaming formats as a leading draw. Together, these findings argue against treating live streaming as gaming-only: conversational shows, personality-led broadcasts, and real-world streams are meaningful parts of the format mix. What Twitch’s 2026 figures say about gaming and participation
Twitch reported more than 8.6 billion hours of gaming content watched from January 1 through September 1, 2026. It also said DropsEnabled streams generated 1.6 billion hours, up 46%, and that 40 million users participated and claimed Drops. Twitch describes these as globally sourced figures from its internal data; watch-hour totals are rounded, and growth percentages compare with the same dates in 2025. Drops connect viewing with in-platform participation, but the figures do not establish a typical creator’s earnings or guarantee that enabling Drops will increase an individual channel’s audience.

How to use these statistics when choosing a format or platform
- Compare like with like. Keep the reporting period, platform coverage, and content categories beside each figure. Do not calculate a trend line by combining totals whose scope differs.
- Separate audience from creator supply. Watch hours, hours streamed, unique channels, and viewers per channel answer different questions; none is a substitute for the others.
- Treat averages as market context, not a personal forecast. Platform-level viewers per channel do not show an individual creator’s likely audience or how easy a platform makes discovery.
- Choose a content premise you can sustain. The cited findings show both strong gaming viewership and meaningful non-gaming activity, but they do not identify a guaranteed winning niche.
- Do not infer income from watch time. These reports do not establish platform-wide creator earnings, typical income, or guaranteed growth outcomes.
