A service prepares video in versions suited to different screens and connection conditions; its app requests and plays those video segments as they arrive. You can watch through a compatible smart TV, phone, tablet, computer, console, or optional streaming player.
What does “OTT” mean?
OTT stands for “over the top.” The name describes how video reaches you: it travels over the public internet, on top of the connection you already use, instead of arriving through a cable or satellite TV distribution path. The internet provider carries the data, but the video service and its app manage the programming and playback.
In practice, OTT can refer to on-demand programs and to live programming delivered online. It describes a delivery approach, not a particular subscription, device, or kind of content.
How does OTT streaming work?
Streaming means the app receives and plays media as delivery continues. It does not need to download the entire program before playback begins. The general process looks like this:

- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- The provider prepares the video. A title may be encoded into several versions with different resolutions, bitrates, codecs, or other properties. The available versions depend on the provider.
- The video is divided into segments. The provider makes the media available in short, time-based pieces. A manifest or playlist describes the available segments and versions.
- The app requests what it needs. When you select a title, the player retrieves the manifest and requests media segments over HTTP, the same broad web-delivery infrastructure used for other internet content.
- Delivery infrastructure sends the segments. Servers, content delivery networks (CDNs), and caches can help distribute the video closer to viewers. The exact arrangement differs by service.
- The player selects, decodes, and plays the video. It continues requesting segments while playback proceeds, rather than waiting for one complete file to arrive.
The broad chain is common, but providers do not all use the same encoding choices, segment durations, network arrangements, protocols, or content-protection systems.
How does streaming adjust to internet speed?
Many services offer multiple versions of a program. The player can choose among the versions based on observed network throughput and the capabilities of the device. If conditions change, it may switch to a different version as playback continues. This adaptive-bitrate behavior helps balance picture quality against the chance that the player will run short of buffered video and stall.

- Simple and Elegant Home Screen. No ads, no clutter. Customize your home screen with your favorite apps and contents, including direct access to MYTVOnline3 for the ultimate streaming experience.
A switch to a lower-quality version can make playback more stable on a weaker or changing connection; when conditions allow, the player may select a higher-quality version. The available choices and how quickly a service changes between them vary. There is no single minimum internet speed or data-per-hour figure that applies to every OTT service: usage depends on the selected rendition, encoding, codec, duration, and player.
What are HLS, MPEG-DASH, and CMAF?
These are technical formats and standards used in delivering online video, not subscriptions that viewers need to buy. An app generally handles the details for you.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- MPEG-DASH is a standards suite for multimedia streaming over existing HTTP infrastructure, including servers and CDNs. It supports both on-demand and live streaming, as described by MPEG.
- HLS, or HTTP Live Streaming, is specified in IETF RFC 8216. It describes playlist and media-file formats for continuous and long-form video over the internet.
- CMAF, the Common Media Application Format, defines segmented media objects. Apple explains that compatible HLS and MPEG-DASH presentations can share CMAF addressable objects, which can support shared caching: Apple Developer.
The standards differ in their technical details, but for a viewer the practical point is straightforward: the service and compatible playback app arrange delivery.
Is OTT streaming live or on demand?
It can be either. With on-demand video, you choose a stored program and start watching from a point in it. With live video, playback follows an ongoing event. Both can use internet-based segment delivery. The standards overview from MPEG describes MPEG-DASH as supporting both modes.

A dedicated player is not required if you already have a compatible device. If your television lacks the app you need, a streaming media player for TV may be an option, but check the exact model’s service support, TV connection requirements, resolution support, geographic availability, and current listing before buying. Roku’s developer overview illustrates one example of content delivery from a CDN to a Roku device.
How is OTT different from downloading a video?
With streaming, playback and delivery happen at the same time: the player receives segments while you watch. With a download-first approach, the complete file is obtained before you watch it later. Some services offer both streaming and downloads, but they are different ways to access a program.
Could you run a 24/7 YouTube stream from pre-recorded videos?
Yes. If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded video rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and start the stream; the cloud service loops the uploaded video without requiring your computer or home connection to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming, not OTT viewing apps, and it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. See StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo’s three steps are: upload a video or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off while the stream runs in the cloud. Every slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K at 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
