For 1080p YouTube Live with H.264, set OBS to 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube lists minimum H.264 bitrates of 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60; those are platform figures, not guarantees that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain a stable broadcast.
Recommended OBS settings for 1080p YouTube Live
Use the H.264 row that matches your frame rate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these values for live ingest:
| Setting | 1080p at 30 fps | 1080p at 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920 × 1080 | 1920 × 1080 |
| H.264 video bitrate | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum | 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum |
| Rate control | CBR | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Stereo audio bitrate | 128 Kbps recommended | 128 Kbps recommended |
| Stereo audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz | 44.1 kHz |
These bitrate values apply to H.264. YouTube publishes separate bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so do not assume the H.264 numbers apply to those codecs. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Choose 30 fps or 60 fps
Use 30 fps for less demanding motion or limited capacity
Thirty frames per second is often a suitable choice for a presenter, documentary discussion, interview, or slideshow. It places a lower encoding and upload demand than 60 fps. If the computer or connection struggles during a representative test, 30 fps may be the more reliable setting.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Use 60 fps when the action benefits from it
Fast-moving gameplay, sports, or other action can benefit from 60 fps if the source, encoder, and connection can maintain it. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is higher for 1080p60 than for 1080p30: 17 Mbps rather than 14 Mbps. A higher frame rate is not automatically better if it causes dropped frames or an unstable stream.
For either choice, match the OBS output to the intended stream and test the actual content. Select the highest frame rate your system and network can sustain consistently, rather than choosing by resolution alone.

Set up OBS and verify the output
- Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. It considers what you want to do, your computer hardware, and network conditions. Treat its result as a starting point, not a substitute for a test. OBS documents this workflow in its Quick Start Guide; the guide dates to 2021, so exact interface details can vary by release.
- Set the stream output to 1920 × 1080. Arrange your canvas and sources for the intended layout, and check that the important picture fits within the output frame.
- Choose the frame rate and encoder settings. For H.264, select the matching 14 Mbps or 17 Mbps recommendation above, set rate control to CBR, and use a 2-second keyframe interval. If you select AV1 or H.265/HEVC, consult the separate YouTube row for that codec instead of reusing H.264 figures.
- Check audio devices. Open Settings → Audio and confirm the intended microphone and desktop audio devices. Watch the Audio Mixer meters while speaking or playing audio. OBS may capture desktop audio and a microphone by default; select devices manually if the meters do not move or the wrong input appears.
- Connect the stream securely. Use RTMPS, which YouTube recommends for secure delivery. Add the YouTube stream key to OBS without exposing it publicly: the key is the credential that directs the encoder feed to your channel. Follow YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- Run a short test before the event. Record or stream for a few minutes with movement and audio similar to the real broadcast. Check OBS output and YouTube’s stream health messages, then correct problems before the scheduled start.
Picture, audio, and codec details
Video format and color
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as live video codecs. For SDR, its guidance recommends Rec. 709 color, square pixels, progressive scan, and 8-bit depth. Keep HDR settings separate: in the cited guidance YouTube lists H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. The applicable values depend on the codec and whether the stream is SDR or HDR; consult YouTube’s codec and audio guidance for the matching requirements.
Audio
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo at 44.1 kHz. Confirm that the right microphone and desktop audio are active in OBS rather than relying on the device names alone; the mixer meters should respond to the intended sources.

Why keyframe consistency matters
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. OBS notes that a consistent interval helps viewers transition smoothly between YouTube playback quality options. YouTube transcodes live streams, including the source feed, so viewers can receive a range of playback formats.
Test the connection and diagnose instability
The recommended stream bitrate is not the same as the upload speed your internet service advertises, and meeting YouTube’s minimum does not establish that your connection will be reliable. YouTube advises running a speed test and choosing a quality that produces a reliable stream. Test at the location and time you plan to broadcast where possible, and leave capacity for other devices and network activity.

YouTube specifically advises testing with similar movement and audio to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages while live. If the test is unstable, reduce the frame rate or output resolution, verify the selected audio devices and encoder, and test again. A bitrate change alone may not resolve every problem.
Common problems and fixes
- OBS shows no audio activity: Open Settings → Audio, select the intended input and output devices, and check the Audio Mixer meters while making sound.
- The broadcast drops frames or becomes unstable: Compare the selected codec, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s matching guidance. Test the upload connection; then try 30 fps or a lower output resolution and run another representative test.
- YouTube reports a stream configuration issue: Confirm that the encoder uses CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (never over 4 seconds), and the correct bitrate row for the selected codec and frame rate.
- Viewers report missing or unintended sound: Check the source devices and mixer meters during a test, and listen to the test recording or stream before going live.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Do not publish or share it. Treat it as a credential directing video to your channel and use YouTube’s stream-key controls if you need to replace it.
Optional equipment: when a capture card matters
A capture card is relevant if you need to bring console or other external video into OBS. OBS supports video-capture sources for webcams and capture cards, and YouTube describes encoder streaming as a way to use external audio and video hardware. A card is not required for every 1080p OBS stream, and it does not set the bitrate, keyframe interval, or other encoding parameters.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules
OBS settings cannot establish that the material in a broadcast is cleared for use or that a channel complies with YouTube’s rules. Before streaming a film, documentary, soundtrack, or other third-party material, confirm that you have the rights or permission needed for that use. A stream being technically successful does not itself establish permission, and a stream key does not grant content rights.
