How to Record a Livestream on YouTube: Archive and Local Backup

YouTube may archive streams under 12 hours, but an OBS local recording gives you a separate copy. Here’s how to find, make, and check each recording.

YouTube can automatically archive livestreams shorter than 12 hours, but it does not guarantee that every stream will be saved. For an important event, record a local copy at the same time—OBS Studio can do this while you stream—and check that both copies are available afterward.

Choose the kind of recording you need

There are two different creator workflows: YouTube’s post-stream archive, which gives viewers a replay on your channel, and a local recording, which saves a file to your computer for backup or editing. You can use both. YouTube DVR is different again: it controls whether viewers can pause or rewind while the broadcast is still live.

Option What it does Main limitation Best suited to
YouTube automatic archive Makes a replay available on your channel after the broadcast. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; an archive is not a dependable backup. A convenient replay for an ordinary-length stream.
OBS local recording Saves a file to storage you control while streaming or offline. Uses local storage and computer resources; file format must suit your editing workflow. A backup, an editable copy, or a recording to keep locally.
YouTube DVR Lets viewers pause or rewind during the live broadcast. Rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams; it does not create your local file. Viewer playback control during the event.

Find and manage YouTube’s automatic archive

YouTube says it can automatically archive livestreams shorter than 12 hours, including streams from an encoder, webcam, or mobile device. It also says it automatically archives 1440p and 2160p (4K) streams. The archive is uploaded to your channel by default, but YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep an important event below that threshold where practical, and use a local recording if losing the footage would matter. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

  1. After the broadcast ends, open YouTube Studio.
  2. Go to Content > Live to find past streams.
  3. Select the stream to open its details. Adjust Visibility if needed, then save.
  4. Open the replay and confirm it plays before relying on it as your only copy.

You can also delete an archive from its details in Studio. Labels can change; if the interface differs, check the current encoder instructions or webcam instructions.

Record locally with OBS while you stream

OBS Studio supports recording at the same time as streaming. Its standard recording guide, dated May 26, 2023, recommends MKV because an unexpected stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. If your editor needs another container, plan and verify a conversion or remux workflow before depending on it. OBS also notes that recording at a quality other than “Same as stream” uses additional computer resources.

  1. Set a destination: Before going live, open Settings > Output in OBS and set the Recording Path to a folder with enough free space. A local drive or optional external drive can be the destination.
  2. Choose format and quality: In Output settings, choose a recording format and quality that fit your editing workflow and the computer’s available resources. Consider MKV for resilience if OBS does not stop gracefully.
  3. Start recording: Start the recording along with your stream. If you want it to start automatically with streaming, configure that workflow in OBS and verify it before the event.
  4. Check the local file: After the broadcast, confirm the recording exists and plays. Do this before deleting it or relying solely on another copy.
  5. Check YouTube separately: Open Studio’s Content > Live area and verify whether the platform archive is available.

OBS recording uses local storage and computer resources. Recording a file at a different quality from the stream can add workload, so choose settings with your system’s capacity in mind. YouTube does not establish a required storage capacity or endorse a particular drive.

Understand DVR, replay, and local files

DVR is a control for viewers during a live event, not the creator’s recording method. With DVR enabled, viewers can pause and rewind; for very long streams, rewind may be limited or unavailable, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the creator went live. If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek backward during the broadcast, but YouTube says they can still watch a recording of the full stream once it is available. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Protect rights and review replay visibility

Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for the content, including music licensing rights where applicable, and comply with applicable rules and regulations. YouTube’s livestream terms set out these requirements. When an archive is created, review its visibility—public, unlisted, or private—especially if the event includes material you did not intend to publish broadly.

Troubleshoot missing or unusable recordings

  • The replay is not in Studio: Check Content > Live after the broadcast. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so the platform archive is not guaranteed. Use a local recording for important events.
  • The OBS file is missing: Check the Recording Path in Settings > Output, then inspect that folder and confirm the recording was started.
  • The file will not play or edit: Check the selected recording format and whether your editor supports it. If you need another container, use a conversion or remux process you have verified rather than assuming the file can be renamed.
  • The computer struggles while recording and streaming: OBS says recording at a quality other than “Same as stream” uses extra resources. Choose a less demanding recording quality or reduce other workload, then verify the setup before an important broadcast.
  • Viewers cannot rewind during the event: Check the stream’s DVR setting. DVR affects live playback controls; it does not determine whether OBS is recording locally.
