OBS sends the broadcast; YouTube does not treat it as live until you start the event there.
What you need before you start
You need OBS Studio installed on a computer, a YouTube channel that can use live streaming, an internet connection with enough stable upload capacity, and the video or audio sources you want to broadcast. A webcam, dedicated microphone, capture card, and hardware encoder are not prerequisites: use equipment you already have, and add devices only when your production needs them. YouTube says creators can start with a laptop and webcam; OBS can also use screen, game, image, and text sources.
Download OBS from the official OBS Quick Start Guide. The guide and OBS overview were published August 25, 2021, so menu names and available options may differ in later releases.
Set up OBS and build your scene
Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
- Open OBS. If the Auto-Configuration Wizard does not appear, choose Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Follow its prompts for your intended use. It considers what you want to do, your computer resources, and network conditions.
- Use the result as a starting configuration, not a guarantee. OBS notes that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record adequately. Encoding method, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect performance. See the OBS system requirements.
Add the sources viewers should see
OBS builds the broadcast from scenes and sources. Select the default scene or create one, then click the plus button in the Sources dock to add inputs. The right choices depend on what you are presenting:

- Talking to camera: add a video capture device and microphone.
- Presenting a documentary, slides, or software: add a display or window capture source, and optionally a camera or text overlay.
- Streaming a game: use a game capture source where supported, or another suitable capture source.
- Showing a prerecorded clip: add the video as a source and check how it behaves in your scene before the event.
Check the OBS preview after adding each source. Resize or crop it as needed, and inspect the layer order: a source higher in the list can cover one underneath it. OBS documents these source types and scene basics in its overview.
Check your audio before connecting
OBS commonly captures desktop audio and microphone input by default. While speaking and playing any sound you intend to include, watch the meters in the Audio Mixer. If a meter does not move, open Settings → Audio and select the intended device. Make a short recording or a private/unlisted test and listen back to confirm that the sound is present, understandable, and not routed incorrectly. A successful video connection does not prove that the audio mix is right.

Create a YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. YouTube explains how to manage or reset a key in its stream key instructions.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if the preset is available. Otherwise choose the appropriate service option and enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room in their corresponding fields.
- Click Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed and display its incoming preview.
- Inspect the preview and audio, then click Go live in YouTube Live Control Room to begin the public event. When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop sending from OBS as the interface directs.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, when the encoder supports it. Use the current URL and available OBS preset shown for your stream rather than relying on an address copied from an unrelated tutorial. YouTube’s connection steps are in its encoder setup guide.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
There is no single best output setting for every computer and connection. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more encoding capacity and upload bandwidth; OBS cautions that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps. Start with the wizard’s recommendation, then test with the same sources and motion you plan to use live.

YouTube’s H.264 recommended video bitrates
The following figures are from YouTube Help’s H.264 recommended-bitrate column, current as retrieved October 3, 2026; the page does not display a publication year. They are recommendations, not guarantees, and do not apply unchanged to every codec.

YouTube’s settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; the same table includes different recommendations for AV1 and H.265 (HEVC). Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Whether a codec or particular combination is available depends on your OBS build and encoding hardware. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and select only options your setup supports.

Leave room for network variation
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom. This is spare capacity for reliability, not additional stream bitrate. Run an upload speed test and remember that other devices sharing the same network can reduce the bandwidth available to the streaming computer. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen rate consistently, lower the output or bitrate and test again.

- Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, with representative movement, graphics, speech, and other audio.
- Start sending from OBS and confirm that YouTube receives the feed. Check the incoming preview for framing, dropped or frozen video, and sound.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and correct problems before the public event begins.
- During the event, keep an eye on both the OBS meters and YouTube stream health; continue monitoring rather than assuming the initial connection remains healthy.
- Set up ahead of time and verify that the event is accessible from the channel or watch page as intended.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and preparing early. No general system requirement can guarantee performance on a particular computer or network.

Fix common OBS-to-YouTube problems

Copyright and YouTube live rules
Before streaming a film, documentary, soundtrack, or other third-party material, confirm that you have the rights or permission to use it in a live broadcast. A clip that can be watched on your computer is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast. YouTube’s copyright and reused-content rules can affect a channel or stream; review the applicable YouTube policies for your content and account before going live. Keep the stream key private, and use a test stream to catch accidental source or audio issues before an audience sees them.
