It depends on whether you mean watching or broadcasting. For 1080p playback, Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 5 Mbps; Twitch recommends 7–12 Mbps or higher download speed for watching 1080p60. For a YouTube Live broadcast, YouTube recommends an outgoing encoder bitrate of 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps at 1080p60 with AV1/H.265, and 14 Mbps or 17 Mbps respectively with H.264. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees or universal broadband-plan requirements.
Watching 1080p: check download speed
When you watch a video, the service sends data to your device, so the relevant measure is download capacity. The exact recommendation depends on the platform and viewing format.

Netflix also lists 3 Mbps or higher for 720p and 15 Mbps or higher for 4K. Its figures are service-specific recommendations, and Netflix notes that several factors can affect playback quality. Twitch likewise says that when watching Twitch, download speed determines video quality; a high upload speed does not compensate for insufficient download capacity.
Broadcasting 1080p: check upload bitrate
For a live broadcast, your encoder sends video out to the platform, so upload capacity matters. YouTube’s recommendations below are encoder bitrate settings for the outgoing video stream—not download speeds for viewers and not a broadband plan requirement.

These are YouTube Help’s current encoder recommendations. Your connection needs to sustain the stream’s outgoing bitrate reliably; a speed test result is not a promise that upload will remain steady throughout a broadcast. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test.
Choose settings your connection and computer can sustain
- Match the comparison to the task. Compare download speed with a playback recommendation when watching; compare available upload capacity with the encoder bitrate when broadcasting.
- Account for frame rate. A 60 fps stream carries more frames each second than a 30 fps stream, and YouTube’s recommended bitrate is higher for 1080p60.
- Account for codec. YouTube gives different recommended bitrates for AV1/H.265 and H.264 at the same resolution and frame rate.
- Consider the whole connection. Other household use and connection stability can affect the capacity available to a stream. The cited platform recommendations do not establish one universal extra safety margin.
- Consider encoding capability. Twitch notes that higher resolutions require higher bitrate and higher frame rates require more encoding power; choose broadcast settings that fit both your internet connection and computer hardware.
Why 1080p can still buffer or drop frames
A nominal internet-plan speed or a single speed test can differ from the capacity actually available to a particular device at a particular moment. For playback, insufficient or unstable download can reduce quality or interrupt viewing. For broadcasting, insufficient or unstable upload can prevent the encoder from sending data consistently. Other traffic on the connection can compete for capacity, and the encoder must also be able to produce the selected resolution and frame rate.

Start by identifying whether the problem is viewing or sending a stream, then check the matching direction—download for playback, upload for broadcast. If you broadcast, compare the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and codec with the corresponding YouTube recommendation above, and lower the settings if your connection or hardware cannot sustain them.
