Yes. You can run a 24/7 YouTube Live stream from an Amazon EC2 Linux server: prepare a server-side video source, send it through an encoder such as FFmpeg to the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, then supervise the process and monitor stream health. EC2 keeps the server available while it runs; it does not make the stream failure-proof, and the right setup depends on whether you are looping a file, generating graphics, or encoding a live feed.
What you need to decide before launching EC2
First identify the source. A prerecorded documentary loop mainly needs access to the media, sustained network capacity, and enough compute for any encoding you choose to do. A live camera or another real-time feed adds capture and processing requirements. If your source is already in the desired format, avoid assuming that it must be transcoded; if it needs conversion, test the actual workload on the instance you plan to use.
- An AWS account and a Linux EC2 instance in a region and instance type that meet your workload.
- A video source you have the rights to stream. Confirm the rights to rebroadcast any documentary, music, or other material; the technical setup does not establish copyright permission.
- YouTube Live access, plus the current stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- An encoder configured for YouTube’s supported settings, and a plan for process restart, monitoring, and recovery.
EC2 is a virtual server. Its instance type determines available compute, memory, network, and storage resources. No universal instance size is established for a 24/7 FFmpeg stream: benchmark your own source and settings rather than treating a small or inexpensive instance as sufficient by default.
Set up the AWS host from India
Choose a region and instance for the actual route
Choose a region based on current service and instance availability, the route to YouTube ingest, latency needs, and price—not simply on geographic closeness. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS with S3 solution documentation lists Asia Pacific (Mumbai), but that does not confirm that every EC2 type or supporting service in a different architecture is currently available there. Check the live AWS regional service list for the exact resources you intend to use.

When selecting an instance, consider whether you are only relaying a suitably prepared source or encoding/transcoding it, along with resolution, frame rate, CPU load, memory, storage, and sustained outbound throughput. AWS notes that network capacity varies by instance and path; an “up to” rate is not a guarantee of continuous bandwidth, and some smaller instances can burst above baseline only temporarily.
Launch Linux and restrict access
- In the AWS console, create an EC2 instance using a supported Linux image and the instance type selected for your workload.
- Choose storage for the operating system, encoder, logs, and any media kept on the server. If the source is stored elsewhere, account for how it will be made available and whether that transfer is reliable.
- Configure the instance’s security group. Allow SSH only from a trusted operator IP where practical. A server sending an outbound stream ordinarily does not need an open inbound RTMP port.
- Connect using your controlled access method, install the encoder and dependencies for your chosen source, and verify that the media or feed is readable before attempting a broadcast.
AWS security groups act as network firewall controls. Review both inbound and outbound rules against the services you actually need rather than opening broad access for convenience.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
Create the ingest destination
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder configuration. Use the current values from YouTube rather than a URL or key copied from an old tutorial.
- Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in a repository, screenshot, article, or world-readable command history. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
YouTube’s encoder setup uses the stream URL and key to connect an encoder to the selected live stream. Keep the key out of logs and other files accessible to people who do not operate the broadcast.
Choose settings for the output you can sustain
YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrate figures include:

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not measurements of what a particular EC2 instance or India-to-ingest route will sustain. Include audio and protocol overhead in your capacity planning, leave bandwidth headroom—YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20%—and test the real route. If CPU, source quality, or sustained network capacity cannot reliably support a target, select a lower supported resolution or frame rate.
The correct FFmpeg command depends on whether the input is a file, a capture device, generated graphics, or a transcoded feed, as well as the codecs and output settings. No single command is established here as a tested, universal 24/7 recipe. Build the command for your input and settings, secure the key, and verify the encoder’s output in Live Control Room before relying on it continuously.

Test, start, and supervise the broadcast
- Start with a short test from the intended EC2 instance and network path. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room. Check picture, audio, stream health, and whether the output resolution and frame rate are what you intended.
- Use the control room’s go-live flow when the preview and health indicators are satisfactory.
- Run the encoder under a process supervisor configured to restart it after an exit, and retain logs that let you diagnose input, encoder, and connection failures. The exact service configuration depends on your Linux distribution and command.
- Monitor both the encoder process and YouTube stream health. Test recovery after a process restart and an instance reboot; recheck credentials and output after rotating the stream key.
A process restart policy is not a promise of uninterrupted streaming. EC2, the source, the route, and YouTube ingest can fail. For a broadcast where an outage has serious consequences, plan and test monitoring and redundancy beyond a single instance.

Estimate the whole AWS bill
A continuously running EC2 instance remains in a billable running state. AWS says On-Demand EC2 is billed by running time with a 60-second minimum, and directs customers to current pricing for exact rates. There is no reliable single monthly figure without the region, instance, runtime, storage, public IPv4 or other applicable network charges, outbound transfer, and supporting services. Use the current AWS pricing page or calculator with those assumptions; do not apply an example for a different region or architecture to your stream.

For a prerecorded loop, media storage and any transfer into the instance can matter alongside compute. If you encode in real time, CPU capacity can change the instance choice and price. Compare the cost of the instance and associated usage against a test that proves it can sustain the exact media and output settings you intend to run.
Do not assume a 24-hour stream creates one complete archive
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as a single complete video. Treat live continuity and on-demand archiving as separate requirements; verify YouTube’s current behavior before promising an archive. Segmenting a broadcast may be worth investigating, but the cited guidance does not certify a particular segmentation workflow.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Confirm that the encoder uses the current stream URL and key, that it is running, and that outbound network access works. | Correct the destination or credential, inspect encoder logs, and retry the short test before going live. |
| Stream drops or repeatedly reconnects | Check process status, source availability, instance status, and sustained network throughput; a burstable network rate may not persist. | Restore the source or process, test the route over time, and choose capacity that can sustain the required output. A restart policy helps recover from process exits but cannot prevent all outages. |
| Video is choppy or YouTube reports poor health | Compare the selected bitrate with encoder load and sustained outbound capacity; check that bitrate mode and keyframe interval match YouTube guidance. | Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a supported sustainable setting, leave bandwidth headroom, and retest on the same instance and route. |
| Audio is missing or incorrect | Check the source audio track and encoder’s audio codec and output mapping. | Configure a supported AAC or MP3 output and confirm audible sound in the Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast. |
| The encoder stops after reboot or a server interruption | Check whether the process is supervised, whether the source is available at startup, and whether credentials or paths changed. | Fix startup and restart behavior, then deliberately test a reboot and confirm the stream reconnects and returns to healthy status. |
| The stream key may have leaked | Consider any public code, command history, screenshot, or log containing the credential exposed. | Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room, replace it in the encoder’s protected configuration, and verify a fresh connection. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded video or playlist running on YouTube without maintaining an EC2 encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud service made by Yorker Media: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
