To add music to an existing screen recording, open the video in an editor, import a music track, place it on the timeline, then position, trim and adjust it while previewing the result. The exact menu names depend on your device and editor. If you have not recorded yet, a device’s recording-audio setting is a separate choice from adding music afterward.
Choose a track and editor
You can use a track already available to your editor or import an audio file stored on your device. Before editing, check that the file is accessible and in a format your editor supports. Also check that you have permission to use the music in the video you plan to publish; access to a song in a personal library does not automatically grant publication rights.
Use the workflow below for your device: iMovie on iPhone or iPad, iMovie on Mac, Clipchamp on desktop, or Premiere on mobile. These are documented options, not a claim that one editor is best for everyone.
Add music in iMovie on iPhone or iPad
- Open your project. In iMovie, open the project and go to its timeline.
- Choose a source. Tap Add Media, then Audio, then My Music to browse downloaded or synced tracks. To use a local file instead, tap Add Media, then Files, and browse to the audio file.
- Preview and add the track. Select a track and add it. iMovie places a song from My Music at the start and fits it to the project length. For a file shorter than one minute, move the playhead to the desired position before adding it.
- Review the timeline. Play the video and check that the music starts and ends where you want. Trim or reposition it as needed.
Apple lists M4A, MP4, MP3, WAV and AIFF as examples of audio-file formats for this workflow. Some protected music-library files may not appear. See Apple’s instructions for adding songs and other audio files to an iMovie project.

Add music in iMovie on Mac
- Open the project and choose Audio, then Music in the media browser.
- Drag the track into the timeline. For background music, place it in the music well; to attach audio to a particular video clip, place it beneath that clip.
- Alternatively, drag an audio file from Finder into the timeline.
- Play the project, then move or trim the audio until it fits the recording.
Apple documents these Mac placement options alongside the mobile workflow in its iMovie audio guide.
Add music with Clipchamp on desktop
- Import a local audio file by dragging it into My media or selecting Import media. Clipchamp also has stock music in its Content library.
- Drag the audio onto the timeline.
- Move, split or trim the track to fit the screen recording, then preview the mix.
If an import fails, confirm that the audio format is supported. Cloud import options can differ between personal and work accounts, so the same source may not be available to every account. Microsoft’s Clipchamp audio instructions describe the workflow.

Add music in Premiere on mobile
- In the project, choose Files and Audio. In the alternate flow, choose Music and audio, then Files.
- Browse your phone storage and select an audio file.
- Once it appears on the timeline, trim it, adjust its volume or combine it with other sounds.
- Preview the edited recording to check the timing and balance.
Adobe’s mobile guide was last updated September 22, 2026. See Import audio from your phone to Premiere on mobile.
Make the music fit the recording
- Set the start and end. Place the track where it should begin and trim it to the section of video you want covered.
- Keep important original audio clear. If the screen recording includes narration or useful system sounds, adjust the music by ear so those sounds remain intelligible. The cited editor guides do not establish a universal volume level or music-to-voice ratio.
- Listen through the finished edit. Check the opening, transitions and ending; a track that sounds suitable at the start may mask speech or continue past the picture later.
Recording audio is different from adding music afterward
If you are still preparing to capture your screen, Android’s screen recorder provides a choice about whether to record audio before starting. That setting concerns audio captured during recording; adding a music track to an existing video is a separate editing step. Android’s guidance does not establish that every device or app can capture all internal app audio. For the available recording controls, see Android Help’s screen-recording instructions.

Check music rights before publishing
A track appearing in your music library or editor does not by itself show that you can publish it in a video. Apple notes that protected music-library files may not appear in iMovie. It also says a song purchased from the iTunes Store may be used in a project only if you are the copyright holder or have express permission from the copyright holder.
YouTube warns that copyright-protected content in Shorts created outside YouTube’s creation tools may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a copyright removal request. Check the track’s license and the rules of the platform where you plan to publish; do not assume that a song’s availability for personal listening clears it for reuse. See YouTube Help’s guidance for enhancing Shorts on Android.

Fix common problems
- The track is missing from the picker: Check that it is downloaded locally or synced to the device. A protected file may be unavailable to the editor.
- The audio file will not import: Check the editor’s supported formats. Apple gives M4A, MP4, MP3, WAV and AIFF as examples; Clipchamp advises checking format support.
- The music starts at the wrong point: Move it along the timeline. In iMovie on iPhone or iPad, move the playhead before adding a file shorter than one minute.
- The music is too long or masks speech: Trim it to fit the recording and adjust its volume while previewing. Listen for narration or other original audio you need to preserve.
