RTMP Streaming Explained: Servers, URLs, and Stream Keys

RTMP sends an encoder’s live audio and video to a platform ingest server. Learn how its URL and stream key differ, when to use RTMPS, and how to troubleshoot setup.

RTMP is a protocol an encoder can use to send live audio and video to a streaming platform. The platform’s server URL tells the encoder where to connect; the stream key identifies or authorizes the broadcast. Get both values from the platform you are streaming to—formats differ, and a key should be treated like a password.

What RTMP does in a live stream

RTMP means Real-Time Messaging Protocol. In a typical live workflow, a camera, screen capture, or other source supplies media to an encoder. The encoder compresses the audio and video and sends them over the network to the platform’s ingest server. The platform then processes the incoming stream for viewers.

Source → encoder → RTMP or RTMPS connection → platform ingest server → platform processing → viewers

The ingest server is the receiving system at the platform’s end. Twitch describes its ingest subsystem as the first stop for incoming streams, where they are received, authorized, and registered before being prepared for viewers. A broadcaster can use software, a console, or a hardware video encoder; dedicated hardware is not required if a supported software encoder meets the production needs.

RTMP URL, server URL, and stream key: what each means

Server URL

The server URL, also called an ingest URL or broadcast URL, points the encoder to the platform endpoint that should receive the stream. Depending on the platform and encoder, it can include a path after the server address.

Stream key

The stream key is a platform-issued identifier or authorization value associated with the broadcast or channel. It is usually entered separately from the server URL, though some encoders expect a combined value. Anyone who obtains a usable key may be able to broadcast to the associated channel, so do not publish it or include it in screenshots shared publicly.

Why examples are not interchangeable

URL structure is platform-specific. Twitch documents a structure like rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>[?bandwidthtest=true]: the server is the receiving endpoint and the key identifies the stream. YouTube may instead provide an ingestion URL and a stream name as separate values; some encoders take those separately, while others require them concatenated as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the exact current values and field instructions provided by the destination platform, not a copied example from another service.

RTMP versus RTMPS

RTMPS is RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection, which encrypts data in transit. Encryption protects the connection between the encoder and ingest endpoint; it does not make a stream key safe to share or change who can access the broadcast.

YouTube Live may show an RTMP URL by default in its setup flow. To use RTMPS, obtain the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and enter that value in an encoder that supports RTMPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for certain SSL errors says to check that the URL uses the rtmps protocol and suggests port 443 when appropriate. Do not change a platform-supplied address or port on the assumption it applies to every service.

Which ingest protocol should you choose?

The right choice depends on the destination platform, the encoder’s protocol and codec support, encryption requirements, latency target, and any resolution or HDR needs. YouTube’s ingestion comparison, last updated June 1, 2026 UTC, lists RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH for third-party clients. These details describe YouTube’s options, not a universal rule for every platform.

Protocol Encryption Codecs listed for YouTube Latency and fit
RTMP Not encrypted H.264 Suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency, according to YouTube’s comparison.
RTMPS Encrypted H.264 Suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency, according to YouTube’s comparison.
HLS Encrypted H.264 and H.265/HEVC, including HDR Can serve higher-resolution needs, but is segment-based and not suitable for ultra-low latency; it typically has more latency than RTMP.
DASH Encrypted H.264 and VP9 Can serve higher-resolution needs, but is segment-based and not suitable for ultra-low latency; it typically has more latency than RTMP.

For a YouTube stream, RTMPS is a practical choice when encryption is wanted and the encoder supports it. HLS or DASH may be relevant when the required codec or HDR support calls for them and the extra latency is acceptable. Check the destination’s current ingestion documentation and the encoder’s supported formats before choosing. The protocol alone does not establish a universal resolution, bitrate, or keyframe setting: use the platform’s current recommendations for the particular stream and encoder.

Set the server URL and stream key in an encoder

  1. Open the destination platform’s live setup. Create or select the broadcast, then retrieve its current ingest URL and stream key or stream name. On YouTube, use Live Control Room; Twitch assigns keys that can be retrieved through its broadcaster dashboard or API.
  2. Choose the platform preset in your encoder if available. A preset can provide the platform-specific connection format. Confirm that the selected protocol is the one you intend to use.
  3. Enter the exact connection values. If the encoder has separate fields, put the server URL in the server or URL field and the key or name in the corresponding key field. If it has one combined field, follow the platform’s instructions for joining the values. Do not add or remove a path, slash, or query string unless the platform tells you to.
  4. Set video and audio options using the platform’s current guidance. Match the selected protocol and codec to what the platform accepts. Resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval are encoder settings, not substitutes for a correct URL or key; there is no single value that applies to every destination and stream.
  5. Start sending from the encoder, then check the platform. Confirm that the platform detects incoming data and review its health or error indicators before relying on the stream. YouTube’s API exposes stream states including active, inactive, and error, plus health information and configuration issues.

Troubleshoot connection problems

  • The platform receives no data: Recheck that the encoder is sending to the selected platform’s current URL, that the key or stream name belongs to that broadcast, and that the encoder is actually streaming. If the encoder expects a combined URL and name, follow the destination’s exact format.
  • The URL appears right, but the connection fails: Check for a mismatch between RTMP and RTMPS, including whether the encoder supports the chosen protocol. For certain YouTube SSL errors, YouTube advises confirming an rtmps URL and suggests port 443.
  • The platform reports a stream error or poor health: Read the platform’s health details and configuration notices, then check the encoder’s output settings against the platform’s current requirements. Do not assume that a valid connection URL guarantees that the video format is accepted.
  • The key may have been exposed: Use the platform’s official controls to refresh or replace it, then update the encoder. Avoid posting real keys in support requests or public images.
  • You want to check Twitch bandwidth without going live to viewers: Twitch documents the optional query parameter bandwidthtest=true for this purpose with Twitch Inspector. It is Twitch-specific, not a general RTMP parameter.

Keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without a computer at home

For a documentary channel that wants uploaded video to loop continuously, configuring a live encoder is one route, but it requires a sending device and a compatible connection. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
