A Raspberry Pi 5 setup for continuous YouTube Live streaming has a reasonable initial planning budget of about ₹7,000–₹10,000 for the board, suitable power, a case or cooling, and boot storage. That is an estimate, not a complete quoted bill: retailer prices vary, and a stream also brings electricity, broadband, and uptime costs. The Pi 5 can be a compact, reusable option, but it needs testing under your actual encoding workload before you rely on it unattended.
How much does a Raspberry Pi 24/7 YouTube stream cost in India?
Plan for roughly ₹7,000–₹10,000 upfront for a Raspberry Pi 5-based computer setup, then add the cost of broadband and electricity. The estimate is derived from India retailer listing snapshots: Robu.in showed a Pi 5 4GB board at ₹5,799 and a 4GB starter kit at ₹8,497. Those listings are not guaranteed checkout prices, and the board and kit listings are not directly equivalent: a kit bundles components, while a board-only purchase needs more parts.
Robu.in also displayed an official 27W USB-C supply at ₹1,094, an active cooler at ₹465, and a case at ₹819. These are examples of listed accessories, not a verified, current itemized basket. Check what a kit contains before buying duplicates, and verify the seller’s current price and compatibility. Boot storage is needed, but a microSD price was not separately established.
| Cost area | What to budget or verify |
|---|---|
| Computer and basic accessories | About ₹7,000–₹10,000 as a planning range derived from the cited Pi 5 4GB board and starter-kit listings; not a fixed quote. |
| Electricity | Calculate from measured wall draw and your own tariff; the Pi’s bare-board current figure is not a streaming-system power measurement. |
| Broadband | Use your own plan cost and confirm that its upload capacity and connection stability suit your chosen stream settings. No India-wide plan price applies. |
| Reliability and backup | Allow for your time to monitor and recover a local system. Router backup or a UPS may be useful, but their prices are not included in the estimate. |
The estimate excludes a camera, microphone, display, router, UPS, broadband plan, and paid streaming software. If you are streaming a documentary or other prerecorded program rather than a live camera scene, you may not need a camera or microphone; you still need a suitable encoder and a source video.

Estimate the electricity bill from a wall measurement
Measure the complete setup at the wall while it is running the stream, including connected peripherals. Then use:
Monthly kWh = measured watts Ă· 1,000 Ă— 24 Ă— 30
Monthly cost = monthly kWh × your electricity rate in ₹/kWh
For illustration only, a measured 5W system drawing power continuously for 30 days would use 3.6 kWh. At an assumed ₹8/kWh, that would cost ₹28.80 for the month. The 5W draw and ₹8 tariff are hypothetical inputs, not a measured Pi streaming result or a national Indian electricity rate.

What a continuous-stream setup needs
- Raspberry Pi 5: the retailer evidence here concerns the 4GB version. It does not establish that 4GB is sufficient for every encoder, scene composition, or software stack.
- Power: Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C supply for Pi 5, with 5V at 5A capability. Raspberry Pi says a 3A supply limits downstream USB peripheral power to 600mA; account for accessories before choosing a supply. See Raspberry Pi computer documentation.
- Boot storage: a compatible microSD card or other supported boot medium, with enough capacity for the operating system, encoder software, and any local media you intend to play.
- Case and cooling: use a Pi 5-compatible arrangement appropriate for sustained operation. A retailer listing included an active cooler and case, but verify the exact parts in the kit you select.
- Stable network: wired Ethernet is a practical choice where available for a fixed installation. It does not guarantee a stable upload; test the actual connection during a sustained stream.
- YouTube Live access and encoder: create a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room and configure the encoder with the stream server URL and private stream key.
Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
1. Create the stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to use Live Control Room. Create or select the stream according to the type of broadcast you are making.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into the encoder’s corresponding fields. YouTube’s setup guidance is at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, show it in a screen capture, or include it in a public configuration file. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
2. Match the video settings to the intended output
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265, or AV1 encoding. It recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, when supported. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. The applicable bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current resolution-specific table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
As one specific reference point, YouTube lists 2 Mbps minimum, 3 Mbps recommended, and 6 Mbps maximum for 720p at 30 fps. These are encoder bitrate figures for that output setting, not a universal broadband speed recommendation. Leave network headroom above the video bitrate and test for upload instability or dropped frames; audio and other network use also need capacity.
3. Test the real workload before leaving it unattended
- Run the exact video, overlays or scene composition, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings you plan to use.
- Check temperature, dropped frames, stream status in Live Control Room, and whether the connection maintains the chosen bitrate.
- Test what happens after a power interruption, router restart, encoder crash, or YouTube disconnect. Confirm how the encoder reconnects and whether it needs the stream key or an operator action again.
- Repeat the test for a sustained period that is meaningful for your use. No cited specification guarantees unattended uptime for your particular Pi, software, cooling, or network configuration.
What changes the real cost of running it 24/7?
Resolution and scene complexity
A simple prerecorded video loop and a complex live scene with several sources or overlays can place different demands on an encoder. Higher output resolution and frame rate also affect the required bitrate and workload. Choose settings based on YouTube’s guidance and what the Pi/software combination can sustain; the available evidence does not establish a maximum reliable resolution or frame rate for a specific Pi setup.

Broadband, power interruptions, and recovery
A continuous stream depends on more than the Pi staying powered: the router and internet connection must also remain available. A connection outage can interrupt delivery even if the computer is still running. A UPS or backup connection may reduce some failure modes, but add cost and still do not guarantee recovery. Budget the time or equipment needed to notice and resolve a stopped stream.
Reuse value versus recurring service cost
A Raspberry Pi is physical hardware you own and may reuse for other tasks, but you manage its software, power, network, cooling, and recovery. A hosted service exchanges much of that local hardware and electricity burden for a recurring service charge and dependence on the provider and your network. Compare the full cost and the amount of hands-on recovery you can accept—not just the purchase price of the board.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Having a video file does not automatically give you the right to broadcast its picture or sound. Before looping a documentary, music, or other program, confirm that you have the rights or permission needed for YouTube streaming, including any third-party footage, music, and artwork. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules are separate questions: permission to use material does not by itself guarantee monetization, and repetitive or reused programming may be assessed under YouTube’s channel policies. Review the rules that apply to your channel and content before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
