Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo loop a video on YouTube Live from a Contabo VPS, run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input file, then send its output to YouTube’s ingest server using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The loop option repeats the file; it does not by itself keep the network connection or FFmpeg process running through failures. You’ll need to choose encoder settings that meet YouTube’s guidance, verify the VPS’s current capacity, and monitor the stream.
What you need before starting
- A video file on the VPS, or another input location accessible to FFmpeg.
- FFmpeg installed with the encoder you plan to use. This example uses H.264 video and AAC audio; the FFmpeg build must include those encoders.
- A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room and a stream configured there.
- A Contabo VPS whose CPU, memory, traffic allocation, and applicable usage terms suit your intended encoding and continuous upload. Check the current details for your specific plan; a plan’s suitability cannot be inferred from the provider name alone.
Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes connecting an encoder using the stream URL and key.
- Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Enter them in the FFmpeg output address as
SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY, using the exact URL and key YouTube provides. Do not publish or share the key: YouTube treats it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance. - If you scheduled the stream, expect to check its preview and click Go live when ready, unless the current stream controls are configured for a different start behavior. Auto-start and auto-stop settings can affect the lifecycle, so check them in Live Control Room.
Choose settings that fit YouTube and your VPS
YouTube’s encoder recommendations are ingest guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode at those settings or sustain the required transfer. Its current guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends RTMPS, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, accepts AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends CBR, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings; available codec encoders depend on your FFmpeg build.
| Example H.264 video setting | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Audio guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 128 Kbps recommended stereo audio |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 128 Kbps recommended stereo audio |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not measurements of Contabo capacity. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom; total stream bitrate should remain below available sustained upload bandwidth. See its streaming tips. Allow for audio as well as video when assessing the total.
For the command below, the example uses 1080p30 H.264 at 14 Mbps, AAC stereo at 128 Kbps, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Change the video bitrate and output dimensions to match the source, your target quality, and the capacity you have verified. A 720p30 stream at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps is a lower-bandwidth example. Avoid upscaling a smaller source merely to match a larger output resolution.

Run FFmpeg with an infinitely looping input
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: 0 means no loop, and -1 means infinite looping. Put it before the input it applies to. In the command below, replace the file path, server URL, and key with your actual values. This is an illustrative command, not a claim that it has been tested on your VPS.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -minrate 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
-rereads the file at its native playback pace rather than sending it as fast as possible. It is commonly used when streaming file input.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. It does not reconnect after a network drop or restart FFmpeg after a process failure.-c:v libx264selects the H.264 encoder when available.-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for reduced encoding work; it does not guarantee a particular CPU load or successful real-time encoding.- The bitrate and buffer options illustrate a constant-bitrate target.
-g 60at 30 fps sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds;-keyint_min 60and-sc_threshold 0aim to avoid shorter scene-change GOPs. Confirm the resulting stream settings and health in YouTube. -pix_fmt yuv420pis a broadly compatible output format for H.264 delivery. Audio is encoded as AAC stereo at the recommended 128 Kbps example rate.-f flvselects the RTMP-family output container commonly used for YouTube encoder ingest. Use the RTMPS server URL supplied by YouTube where available and supported by your FFmpeg setup.
For details of the loop option’s precise behavior, see the FFmpeg command-line documentation. Options beyond the loop behavior are example command choices; verify them against the installed FFmpeg version and encoder support. Keep the key out of screenshots, public logs, and shared shell history where possible.

Check Contabo capacity and start safely
- Check the current Contabo plan’s CPU and memory specifications, included traffic, and applicable terms. Compare those details with the demands of your chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and intended continuous transfer. No particular Contabo plan is established here as sufficient for a given workload.
- Start FFmpeg in a way that suits your operating system and operational needs. A shell session alone is not process supervision: if the session closes or the process exits, the stream can stop. Use an appropriate service manager or session management approach if you need the process to survive an interactive disconnect, and separately plan how to detect and recover from a failed encoder or dropped connection.
- Begin with a test at the intended settings using the actual video’s representative motion and audio. In Live Control Room, check the preview, sound, motion, stream health indicators, and any error messages before going live.
- Once live, monitor stream health and the VPS’s CPU, memory, and network use. YouTube recommends testing representative content and monitoring the session; see its encoder guidance.
- To stop, stop the FFmpeg encoder and end the live stream in YouTube’s controls as appropriate. YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior does not mean a long-running FFmpeg process or VPS connection is failure-proof. See the encoder setup guide.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video | Incorrect ingest URL or stream key, encoder not running, or a failed network connection. | Copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm FFmpeg is still running, and inspect its output for connection errors. Reset a key if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream starts but drops or buffers | Insufficient sustained upload headroom, VPS resource limits, or an unstable connection. | Check total bitrate against measured sustained upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; inspect VPS resource use and YouTube’s stream health. |
| FFmpeg exits or fails to encode in real time | Encoder unavailable in the build, unsupported settings, or insufficient CPU for the chosen encode. | Check FFmpeg’s error output and build capabilities; reduce encoding demands or choose another available encoder, then repeat a representative test. |
| The video plays once instead of repeating | -stream_loop -1 is missing, misplaced after the input, or attached to a different input. |
Place it before the relevant -i, for example -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4. |
| Video repeats but the live session ends after a failure | Input looping does not restart FFmpeg or guarantee reconnection to YouTube. | Check process supervision and connection recovery separately; the loop option covers only repeated input playback. |
| Preview has no sound or the audio is wrong | Missing or incompatible audio stream, incorrect mapping, or unsuitable output audio options. | Inspect the input streams with FFmpeg tools, confirm the selected audio stream, and test the actual output in YouTube’s preview before going live. |
Copyright and reused-content considerations
Looping a file does not grant permission to stream it. Use footage, music, narration, and other material you own or are licensed to use for this kind of live broadcast, and check the applicable rights and YouTube policies before starting. Repeating the same recording also does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization or originality requirements; review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content rather than assuming a loop is eligible.

If you want a YouTube loop without maintaining an FFmpeg process and VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video looping to YouTube, not a camera feed. See the copyright safety checklist before streaming material you did not create.
