To restart a YouTube stream after a Windows VPS reboots, configure Windows to launch OBS Studio with the --startstreaming argument and set the task’s working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. OBS’s automatic reconnect is different: it can recover from some connection interruptions while OBS remains open, but it cannot relaunch OBS after a reboot. Test the complete path, including whether YouTube marks the intended broadcast live.
Before automating OBS startup
First make sure the stream works when started manually. Save the OBS profile and scene collection, confirm the YouTube destination and stream key or account connection, and run a test stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, you can reuse stream settings, including a stream key and metadata; treat the key as a credential and reset it there if it is compromised. Use the actual OBS executable path on the VPS. Installation locations can differ, so do not assume a path copied from another machine or tutorial.
Configure OBS to start streaming after a Windows reboot
1. Find the OBS executable
Locate obs64.exe in the OBS installation folder. You will need its full path for the launch command and that folder’s path for the task’s Start in setting.

2. Add the streaming launch argument
OBS documents --startstreaming as the launch parameter for starting a stream. For a Windows shortcut, open its properties and append the argument after the executable path in the Target field, preserving the quotation marks around a path that contains spaces. The result should follow this pattern:
"C:pathtoobs64.exe" --startstreaming
Use your VPS’s actual path in place of the example. OBS documents the launch parameter and automated-launch requirements in its Launch Parameters guide.

3. Create a startup task
- Open Windows Task Scheduler and choose Create Task.
- On General, choose an account and run conditions appropriate for the VPS. If OBS needs an interactive desktop session to display or control its interface, test the selected logon option rather than assuming a background task will behave identically.
- On Triggers, add a trigger for system startup. If your VPS requires a user session before OBS can access its saved configuration, test a logon trigger as well.
- On Actions, choose Start a program. Set Program/script to the full path to
obs64.exe, and set Add arguments to--startstreaming. - Set Start in to the folder containing
obs64.exe, without the executable name. OBS specifically requires this working directory for launches through Task Scheduler or other automation. - Save the task and inspect its conditions and settings. Choose restart or retry behavior only if it suits your VPS and you have tested what happens when OBS or Windows starts more than once.
These Task Scheduler field names describe the standard Windows task setup; labels can vary by Windows version. The critical OBS-specific requirements are the --startstreaming argument and correct working directory.
Allow for network startup delays
A VPS can start a scheduled task before its network route or DNS is ready. In that case, OBS may launch but fail its first connection attempt. Community reports describe retry or delayed-start approaches, but this is not a guaranteed behavior on every Windows VPS. Test how your host boots before adding complexity.

If the test shows that connectivity is late, configure a startup delay or a connectivity-aware retry and verify the retry cannot create multiple OBS instances or leave an unintended stream running. Check YouTube’s broadcast settings too
Starting the encoder in OBS and making the viewer-facing YouTube broadcast live are related but separate states. For scheduled broadcasts, YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings affect how encoder input starts or ends the broadcast. Confirm that OBS is connected to the intended scheduled broadcast and review the current controls in Live Control Room. Test recovery end to end
- Pick a maintenance window and schedule a VPS reboot.
- After Windows returns, confirm the scheduled task ran and OBS opened with the expected profile, scene collection, and YouTube destination.
- Check that OBS is sending encoder input to YouTube.
- Verify the intended broadcast’s status in Live Control Room or on its public watch page. OBS’s local streaming indicator alone does not prove viewers can see the correct broadcast.
This test distinguishes a task that merely launches OBS from a setup that actually restores the intended YouTube stream.

- OBS is open but the connection dropped: check the network path to the ingest server and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS identifies dropped frames as a possible sign of an unstable connection or unsustainable bitrate; intermittent disconnections commonly involve the network path.
- OBS did not open after a reboot: check the Task Scheduler trigger, account and run conditions, executable path, arguments, and Start in folder. Reconnect settings cannot relaunch a process that has exited.
- OBS reports streaming, but the intended broadcast is not live: check the selected YouTube broadcast and its auto-start and auto-stop settings.
- The first connection fails after startup: check whether the VPS has network and DNS connectivity when the task runs; test a delay or connectivity-aware retry if needed.
A watchdog can add retries or monitoring, but it is a separate component to configure and secure. If you use an external controller, OBS WebSocket is included with OBS Studio 28 and later. OBS recommends authentication because the interface can control OBS remotely; use a strong password and restrict access to trusted local or private-network connections.
