To repeat one VLC video while sending it to YouTube Live, set VLC to repeat the current item, then send VLC’s playback through an encoder configured with your YouTube Live stream URL and stream key. For a playlist, use repeat-all instead. These are separate controls: VLC repeats the source, while YouTube’s player Loop option only repeats playback for a viewer.
Set VLC to repeat the right item
- Open the video in VLC. If you plan to stream several clips, first arrange them in the playlist in the order you want.
- Choose the repeat mode that matches your source. Repeat-current-item makes a single selected video start again when it ends; repeat-all cycles through the playlist. VideoLAN represents these as distinct playlist modes in its VLC playlist API.
- Verify the active mode in your VLC build. Menu labels, indicators, and shortcuts can vary by version and operating system. The available official evidence does not establish one universal desktop click path, so check the controls shown in your own VLC version rather than assuming a particular menu name or shortcut.
VLC’s repeat setting affects only playback of the source. It does not create a YouTube broadcast or connect to YouTube.
Connect the repeating playback to YouTube Live
- Create or select a livestream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to prepare the broadcast.
- Copy the Stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the matching server and key fields in your encoder. The stream key is a credential: YouTube says it is like the stream’s password and address, so do not share it. See Manage live stream settings.
- Send VLC’s playback through the encoder. Configure the encoder to use the VLC video source and the YouTube connection details. The exact steps for selecting VLC as a source depend on the encoder; the available setup guidance does not establish a universal encoder interface.
- Start the encoder output and check the Live Control Room preview. Follow YouTube’s preview and go-live sequence. To end the broadcast, stop the encoder feed and then end the stream as directed in Live Control Room.
Choose connection and video settings, then test
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Use the exact RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. YouTube’s guidance on encrypting a stream using RTMPS covers the protocol; its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page gives quality-specific recommendations.
- Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to values supported by your encoder and sustained by your available upload connection. There is no single bitrate appropriate to every setup; consult YouTube’s recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you choose.
- Test the whole path from VLC through the encoder to YouTube before the intended broadcast. Monitor stream health during the test and while live.
- If the encoder reports a connection or SSL error, check that the URL exactly matches the RTMPS address shown in Live Control Room and confirm RTMPS support in the encoder.
Fix common repeat and connection problems
- The clip stops instead of restarting: Check that repeat-current-item is active, not a mode that does not repeat. Confirm the repeat indicator in your VLC build.
- The playlist starts over, but the clip does not repeat on its own: Repeat-all cycles the whole playlist. Select repeat-current-item to repeat only the selected clip.
- VLC loops locally but YouTube receives no video: Repeat mode does not connect a stream. Check that the encoder is running, its source is VLC playback, and its server URL and stream key match the current Live Control Room details.
- The encoder cannot connect or reports SSL trouble: Recheck the stream URL and key, verify the selected protocol and encoder support, and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. For RTMPS-specific issues, consult YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
- You are using YouTube’s Loop control: That control repeats a video or playlist for someone watching in YouTube’s player; it does not repeat the source being sent to a livestream. See YouTube’s viewer-side Loop instructions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video running on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
