To run vMix to YouTube continuously, create a YouTube Live event, connect its stream key in vMix, configure a supported encoder and bitrate, then test the full setup before relying on it. A genuine 24/7 broadcast also needs a plan for network and power interruptions—and for recording: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all.
What you need before setup
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. For a first-time live stream, YouTube may take up to 24 hours to activate the feature, according to the vMix Knowledge Base.
- A computer running vMix, a reliable wired network connection where possible, and sustained upload capacity appropriate for your chosen format.
- A program source: for a documentary channel, this might be a prepared playlist or a continuous vMix production. Check that you have the rights to stream every video, image, music track, and other material.
- A separate archive plan if you need to retain the program. YouTube’s automatic archive is not dependable for a single stream longer than 12 hours.
The exact vMix interface can vary by version. The steps below use the current YouTube Studio workflow described by the vMix Knowledge Base and vMix Help 28’s streaming settings.
Create the YouTube Live event and get its key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live.
- Create an instant stream or schedule an event. Add the title, description, visibility, and other event details in Studio.
- Copy the event’s stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a signal to your channel. Do not publish it or share it in screenshots.
If this is your channel’s first live broadcast, allow for activation time before the planned start. The vMix Knowledge Base says YouTube may require up to 24 hours.
Connect vMix to YouTube
- Open vMix’s Streaming Settings.
- Select YouTube Live as the destination and paste the stream key into the field shown by your version of vMix. Save the settings.
- Choose the output you want to send. Confirm that the production’s frame size and frame rate match the intended stream format.
YouTube’s general encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. If your vMix version presents separate server and key fields instead of a built-in YouTube destination, use the URL and key shown for that event in YouTube Studio. Avoid reusing a key for a different event unless you deliberately configured a reusable key.

Choose encoder, resolution, and bitrate
vMix Help 28 identifies FFMPEG as the recommended streaming application in vMix’s settings. For broad compatibility, H.264 is a straightforward baseline. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; use the bitrate recommendations for the specific codec and format you select.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance specifies AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. vMix FFMPEG uses AAC audio.

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, not measurements of Indian broadband performance and not a guarantee that a given connection can sustain them. Test the actual upstream connection while the production is running. Leave room for fluctuations rather than selecting a bitrate equal to the best result from a speed test. If the connection is inconsistent, consider a lower resolution or frame rate and test again.
Test, then start the scheduled broadcast
- Before the public event, send a test stream with representative movement and the same kind of audio the program will use. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before going live.
- In YouTube Studio, check the incoming preview and stream-health messages. Confirm that picture, sound, and synchronization are acceptable.
- In vMix, open View Status to inspect technical information when diagnosing a connection or output problem.
- For a scheduled stream, start streaming from vMix first. When the signal appears in YouTube Studio’s preview, use Studio’s Go Live control to begin the public event.
vMix’s network buffer may help smooth delivery when available network speed varies, but it cannot compensate for a connection that is consistently too slow or unstable. A buffer can also add delay; verify the result with a test rather than assuming it solves dropouts.

Plan for 24/7 continuity and archives
Understand YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but that does not make a single day-long broadcast a safe way to create a complete replay. If you need a YouTube replay, consider dividing programming into shorter scheduled events. If you need a continuous transmission, make a separate local recording and verify that it is actually being written.
Estimate local recording storage
Storage required depends on recording bitrate and duration. As a rough planning calculation, a video stream at 5 Mbps produces about 2.25 GB per hour before audio, container overhead, and any other recorded tracks; at 17 Mbps, it is about 7.65 GB per hour before those additions. These are arithmetic estimates from the stated bitrates, not vMix performance tests. Check free space and sustained write behavior on the actual recording system.

An external SSD is one option for a local archive workflow. vMix’s reference systems show SSD-equipped recording-capable builds, but they do not establish a particular model or capacity. Choose capacity based on your actual bitrate and retention period, then test a full recording and playback before deployment.
Measure the site rather than assume a national answer
India’s city, ISP, connection type, and local power conditions differ. The cited setup sources do not establish city-level ISP performance or a universal UPS size. Measure sustained upload and packet stability at the installation site, and check how long the computer, router, and networking equipment can remain powered during local outages. A backup power system should be sized from the equipment’s measured draw and the runtime you need.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm vMix is streaming, check that the correct event and stream key are selected, and verify the destination settings. If live streaming was just enabled on a new channel, allow for YouTube’s activation period.
- Preview appears, but the scheduled event is not public: For a scheduled event, starting vMix sends the signal; you must also select Go Live in YouTube Studio after confirming the preview.
- Stream health reports interruptions or dropped frames: Test sustained upload while the production is active. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if needed; use a wired connection where practical. A larger vMix network buffer can help with variable speed, but does not repair insufficient capacity.
- Audio is absent or distorted: Check that the intended vMix audio source is enabled and metering, then confirm the encoded output during a test. YouTube’s stereo guidance is AAC or MP3, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz; vMix FFMPEG uses AAC.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A single stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording or split the schedule into shorter events if YouTube replay retention matters.
- The stream stops during an outage: Check the computer, router, and network equipment separately; identify whether power loss or internet loss caused the interruption. The cited sources do not establish a guaranteed recovery design for a local vMix installation, so test your own backup and restart procedure.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before scheduling a continuous loop, check the rights and permissions for every documentary, soundtrack, photograph, clip, and graphic in the playlist. A license to watch or download a work does not necessarily grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube may detect copyrighted audio or video during a live stream, and a stream can be interrupted or restricted. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies, and keep evidence of licenses or permissions. Repeating material you do not own or have permission to use also raises reused-content and monetization concerns; streaming continuously does not make reused material original.
