To keep an OBS YouTube stream running overnight, prevent the spare PC from sleeping, choose encoder settings its hardware and upload connection can sustain, and test the entire path in advance. Use a wired connection if Wi-Fi is unstable, monitor OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room, and record locally if you need a copy: no setting can guarantee an uninterrupted stream, and YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives.
What has to stay working overnight
OBS needs the spare PC to remain awake, the encoder to keep up, the network to deliver a stable upload, and YouTube to receive the feed. A weakness in any link can interrupt the broadcast. The steps below reduce avoidable problems, but a rehearsal cannot prove that an unattended stream will last all night.
- Power: the computer must not sleep or hibernate during the broadcast.
- Encoding: the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate must be manageable for the PC.
- Connection: available upload bandwidth must reliably support the stream, with room for fluctuations and other traffic.
- Preservation: YouTube’s archive and DVR behavior has a 12-hour caveat, so plan separately if you need a recording or rewind.
Set the spare PC to stay awake
Check Windows 11 power timeouts
- On the PC that will run OBS, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Check the system sleep and hibernate timeouts and make sure they will not activate during the planned stream. A screen turning off is different from the PC going to sleep.
- Confirm the behavior on that specific machine. Available controls and behavior can vary with the operating system and hardware.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance is at Power settings in Windows 11. Keep the computer’s ventilation clear; there is no universal cooling product or room setup established here as a guarantee against hardware failure.
Make the upload connection predictable
Measure upload and leave headroom
Test upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom between available upload capacity and the stream’s bitrate, because other network traffic and variation can reduce what OBS can actually use. OBS’s connection guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. Treat both as guidance, not a promise: test the stream and use its observed health to choose a stable setting.

For example, if other people or devices share the connection, their traffic can consume bandwidth during the night. Choose a bitrate that the connection can sustain under realistic conditions rather than the highest number it briefly reaches.
Prefer Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unstable
If OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, OBS identifies a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server as a likely category of problem. Try wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable. A cable can improve the local link, but it will not resolve ISP congestion, insufficient upstream service, encoder overload, or a fault elsewhere in the path.
When the problem continues, check the router or modem, Ethernet cable, network drivers, VPN, security software, and network-prioritization utilities. OBS also recommends trying a different ingest server. See OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide (dated September 30, 2024).

Choose YouTube-compatible OBS output settings
Start with YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance, then select a combination the spare PC can encode and the connection can upload reliably. YouTube’s recommendations are not a guarantee that a particular PC or internet connection can handle them.

YouTube lists these example recommended H.264 bitrates:

These are YouTube recommendations, not minimum requirements or evidence that your connection can sustain them. If tests show instability, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the stream is reliable.

Check codec, rate control, and keyframes
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance also includes RTMP.
- Codec: YouTube documents H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Use an option the spare PC supports and can encode consistently; the right choice depends on its hardware.
- Rate control: use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s documented guidance goes up to 60 fps. A lower frame rate may be a better fit if the PC or upload connection struggles.
Do not assume the most demanding resolution or frame rate is best for an overnight broadcast. The practical choice is the highest setting that remains stable in a representative test.
Run a full rehearsal before leaving the stream unattended
- Set up the OBS stream and use representative audio and movement, rather than testing only a static screen.
- Watch OBS’s connection status and dropped-frame counter during the rehearsal.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the preview and stream-health messages. YouTube’s streaming tips explain its recommendations, including testing encoder workflows.
- Confirm that the event is accessible to a viewer in the way you intend.
- If recording locally, verify that the file exists and that its size continues to grow while recording.
YouTube describes testing backup-encoder failover for professional workflows. Whether that added configuration is worthwhile depends on the stream’s importance and scale; a second encoder is not required to apply the basic overnight checks above.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a recording matters, make a local recording and verify the resulting file instead of relying on the automatic archive. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Archive creation and viewer rewind are separate issues. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; that affects viewers’ ability to rewind and does not itself determine whether the broadcast stays live. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

OBS dropped frames are increasing or the connection keeps disconnecting
This points to connection stability or bitrate capacity. Test upload again under realistic network use, lower the OBS video bitrate if it exceeds stable capacity, try Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable, and investigate the router, modem, cable, drivers, VPN, security software, or traffic-prioritization utilities. Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no connection warning
Buffering can be caused by viewers’ own devices or connections. If buffering affects a broad audience, consider lowering bitrate or output quality to make the stream easier to receive. OBS’s stream buffering troubleshooting guide distinguishes viewer-side buffering from encoder connection problems.

YouTube reports encoder, image, or audio trouble
Review YouTube’s Live Control Room messages, check OBS’s selected output and encoder load, and inspect a local recording if one is available. Use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance to investigate the dashboard’s specific warning.
The PC disappears from the stream overnight
Check sleep and hibernate timeouts first, then investigate power or system stability on the actual PC. The symptom alone does not establish whether the cause was Windows, hardware, power, OBS, or the network.
The stream ends around 12 hours or its archive is missing
Separate the live broadcast from what YouTube preserves afterward. A missing archive does not establish that the live stream failed; YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use and verify a local recording when preservation matters.

Keep the stream key private
YouTube’s stream key lets an encoder send a feed for acceptance. Treat it as private; if it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
