You can attempt to run PRISM Live Studio on a VPS, but the documented desktop requirements do not certify VPS hosting. Plan on a persistent Windows desktop with suitable GPU access, then test the complete setup before relying on it: PRISM lists Windows 10/11 64-bit, a discrete GPU and at least 8 GB of RAM for Windows, while YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all.
Can PRISM Live Studio run on a VPS?
PRISM Live Studio can be installed in a Windows VPS if the virtual machine provides a compatible desktop environment and hardware resources. However, PRISM’s published specifications describe desktop requirements, not validated VPS configurations. They do not establish that a particular provider’s virtual GPU, encoder path or remote desktop capture will work correctly.
PRISM lists Windows 10/11 64-bit and Apple Silicon macOS Monterey 12.3 or later for its desktop app. Linux is not listed as a supported desktop platform. A typical Linux VPS therefore is not the documented route for running PRISM Desktop; running a Windows virtual machine on a host is a separate setup and is not validated by those specifications. Choose a VPS that can handle PRISM
PRISM publishes these Windows specifications. They are app requirements, not a guarantee that a virtualized GPU will perform like the named physical hardware.

For a documentary feed or other pre-recorded video, the general streaming recommendation is the more relevant point of reference than the gaming profile, but the provider still needs to expose a working encoder path. Before renting a server, ask the provider:
- Does the selected Windows instance provide a persistent, interactive desktop session?
- What GPU is actually available to the VM, and can PRISM use its encoder rather than merely seeing a virtual display?
- Are CPU and memory adequate for your scene, sources and encoding workload?
- Can the network sustain your outbound bitrate, and are there bandwidth limits?
- What happens to the desktop and running apps during maintenance, host restarts or a disconnect?
These are practical evaluation questions based on PRISM’s requirements and YouTube’s network guidance, not a PRISM-approved provider checklist. Do not assume that a listing advertising a “GPU VPS” has a configuration PRISM supports. For PRISM’s performance guidance, see its official support guide.

Install PRISM in the VPS desktop
- Provision Windows 10/11 64-bit. Confirm the operating system version, GPU access, memory and CPU before you commit to a long billing period.
- Connect to the persistent desktop. Install and open PRISM in the same Windows session that will remain available for the broadcast. Verify that video preview and the chosen encoder work through the VPS connection.
- Install PRISM from its official desktop page. Sign in or configure the app as needed, then build the scene for your documentary content. Keep it lean: PRISM warns that multiple running programs and higher capture resolution or frame rate can increase CPU, GPU and memory load.
- Rehearse the complete workflow. Confirm the intended video and audio sources, encoder selection, preview and network performance before you depend on the VPS for continuous output.
The sources do not establish a PRISM setting that automatically restarts the app or recovers a failed VPS session. Watchdog, scheduled restart or failover behavior would require separate implementation and testing.
Connect PRISM to YouTube Live
- Set up the live event in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the event and locate YouTube’s stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the destination in PRISM. PRISM supports platform account connections and custom RTMP setup. For a custom destination, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in PRISM’s platform/stream settings and save. PRISM’s FAQ lists RTMP and HLS (YouTube) among its supported protocols; follow the labels shown in your installed version.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password: it authorizes the encoder to send a feed to your YouTube channel. Do not expose it in screenshots, recordings or logs. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update PRISM with the replacement.
- Start a test broadcast and check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Confirm the correct event receives the feed and that both picture and sound are present before relying on it.
YouTube documents copying the stream URL and stream key into an encoder in its encoder setup instructions. PRISM’s documented configuration path is through its platform connection or custom RTMP setup; exact control labels may vary by app version.

Set a bitrate and verify the connection
YouTube’s encoder recommendations specify RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). Its recommended H.264 video bitrates include:

These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not proof that every PRISM and VPS encoder combination supports every listed codec or frame rate. Match the output to the source, choose a bitrate the VPS can sustain, and validate the resulting feed in YouTube’s stream health panel. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and allowing about 20% capacity beyond the total stream bitrate, including a backup stream if one is used. For one 1080p30 stream at the recommended 10 Mbps video bitrate, that guidance implies at least 12 Mbps of available outbound capacity; 12 Mbps is the arithmetic result of adding 20% headroom, not a separate YouTube-published threshold. Check the VPS connection with the actual scene, audio and bitrate, and retain enough margin for fluctuations. YouTube’s streaming tips also emphasize a reliable connection and ongoing monitoring.

A VPS removes the need to leave a home computer running, but does not by itself guarantee that PRISM, the virtual machine or the network will stay up. Before scheduling a continuous broadcast:

- Run a long-duration rehearsal with the actual content, scene, audio, resolution and bitrate.
- Check PRISM’s preview and YouTube’s stream health, including audio/video quality.
- Watch CPU, GPU and memory usage while the scene is active; close unnecessary applications.
- Confirm how you will notice a dropped feed or a provider restart, and test any recovery process you configure.
- Review the provider’s maintenance and restart behavior against the amount of interruption you can tolerate.
PRISM’s performance guide notes that running multiple programs during a broadcast can significantly affect CPU, GPU and memory use. YouTube likewise recommends testing and monitoring. Neither source establishes automatic recovery or failover for a PRISM installation on a VPS, so do not treat those features as present unless you implement and verify them independently.
Plan separately for recordings and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours it may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted 24/7 event should therefore not be treated as a dependable replay. If you need an archive, plan and test separate recording or event segmentation, and verify that your approach does not interrupt the live output. YouTube’s archive guidance does not prescribe a PRISM method for keeping a continuous public stream live while also making recoverable recordings.
