Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To stream a prerecorded video on YouTube with Wirecast, add the clip to a Wirecast production, send the production to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, check the incoming preview, and—if the event is scheduled—click Go live in Live Control Room. Wirecast supplies the encoded program; YouTube supplies the live ingest and viewer page.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16.
- Install and open Wirecast, and have the prerecorded video file you intend to play. Wirecast can mix prerecorded clips into a live production, but exact controls, supported formats, and clip-end behavior depend on the installed version.
- Check that your internet connection has enough upload capacity for the output bitrate you choose. YouTube recommends testing the connection and encoder before the event.
For current eligibility details, see YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
Set up YouTube Live and get the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling creates a watch page you can share in advance and lets viewers set reminders.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy the server URL and stream key. A stream key authorizes an encoder to send video to the event, so treat it like a password; reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Prefer RTMPS when available. In Live Control Room, use the lock icon under Stream settings to reveal the RTMPS address, then copy the address and key.
See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and RTMP and RTMPS ingest guidance for the current Live Control Room flow.
Add the video in Wirecast
- In Wirecast, create or open a production and add the prerecorded clip as a media source. Telestream describes Wirecast as supporting prerecorded video in a production; the exact menu names and supported file types can vary by version.
- Place or cue the clip in the shot/layer you want to send to program output. Preview it in Wirecast and confirm its picture and audio before connecting to YouTube.
- Check the clip’s ending behavior in your installed Wirecast version. The reviewed documentation does not establish whether a particular release automatically holds, stops, or loops a clip. Do not assume it will repeat; use a documented playlist or repeat control only if your version provides one.
Consult the documentation for your installed release at Telestream Wirecast rather than relying on button names from another version.

Configure Wirecast’s YouTube output
- Choose the YouTube destination or encoder output in Wirecast. If a YouTube preset is available, use it; otherwise enter the server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Select RTMPS when offered.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate to match the source and your available upload bandwidth. Select a bitrate from YouTube’s table for that specific resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate suitable for every stream.
- For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options. Its recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the exact bitrate and codec requirements for your chosen output. YouTube transcodes live video for playback formats, so prioritize a stable, reliable feed that your connection can sustain.
Check YouTube’s recommended live encoder settings before going live because the table provides different bitrate values by resolution and frame rate.
Test the feed, then go live
- Start sending the Wirecast output to YouTube. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check stream health.
- Test with representative audio and motion, not only a static opening frame. Confirm that the clip’s sound is present and synchronized and that the picture remains stable.
- For a scheduled event, click Go live in Live Control Room after confirming the preview. Starting the encoder alone does not necessarily make the scheduled event public.
- For a planned broadcast, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are preparedness recommendations, not platform-enforced timing rules.
YouTube’s advice on testing, preview, and stream health is in its live streaming tips.

End the broadcast and check the archive

- YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that automatic-archive statement for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.
See YouTube’s encoder streaming guide for event and archive details.
Settings and choices that affect the result
Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source video and the upload connection, then use YouTube’s corresponding bitrate recommendation. Raising output quality beyond what the connection can sustain can cause an unstable feed; lowering it may reduce detail. Test the complete clip or a representative section before the event.

RTMPS or HLS
RTMPS is the practical default for ordinary Wirecast-to-YouTube ingest because it encrypts the connection. YouTube also supports HLS ingest for particular technical needs, such as HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP, but notes that HLS has higher latency. A routine prerecorded-video stream generally has no reason to use HLS unless the production requires one of those capabilities.
Copyright and channel rules
Using a prerecorded file does not exempt a broadcast from YouTube’s copyright or live-streaming rules. Make sure you have the rights or permission to use the video, soundtrack, and any other included material. Verify your channel’s eligibility before scheduling, and review YouTube’s current policies if you are uncertain whether the content is permitted.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming preview in Live Control Room | Wirecast is not sending, or the server URL or stream key is incorrect. | Confirm the encoder output is started, recheck the URL and key against the correct YouTube event, and verify the RTMPS address if using RTMPS. |
| Preview appears, but the scheduled event is not public | The scheduled broadcast has not been manually started in Live Control Room. | Check the preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room. |
| Video stalls or stream health reports problems | The selected output bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may be inconsistent. | Run a speed test, choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table for the output resolution and frame rate, and test again with representative motion and audio. |
| The clip stops instead of repeating | Repeat behavior depends on Wirecast version and how the media source or playlist is configured. | Check the documentation and playback controls for your installed version; do not assume a clip loops automatically. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Someone else could use the key to send a feed to the event. | Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the Wirecast destination with the replacement. |
| The stream ended but no archive is available | The automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not longer streams. | Check the event and video status in YouTube Studio; do not assume automatic archiving for a broadcast at or beyond 12 hours. |
