First confirm that viewers are actually receiving a choppy stream: XSplit’s Stage preview can show frame-rate dips even while the live output and recording remain smooth. If the delivered stream is dropping frames, check computer load and encoding, then upload stability, then YouTube ingest settings—in that order. Use XSplit’s output indicators and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health together so you fix the bottleneck rather than changing settings blindly.
Confirm where the frame drops occur
Compare four views before changing anything: XSplit’s Stage preview, the stream or recording output, YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health, and—if possible—a viewer’s playback. XSplit says Stage-only dips can happen while the livestream or recording remains smooth. A preview dip by itself is not proof that viewers are receiving dropped frames.
- Only Stage looks choppy: Check the live output or a local recording before adjusting encoding settings.
- The local recording and stream both stutter: Investigate capture, encoding, and computer load.
- The local recording is smooth but YouTube reports a problem: Check outbound network stability and YouTube ingest compatibility.
- YouTube reports healthy stream health but a viewer sees buffering: Compare playback on another connection or device; viewer-side playback can differ from the signal XSplit sends.
XSplit’s guidance on FPS-related issues and dropped FPS, updated November 8, 2022, describes the distinction between preview and actual output: XSplit Support. Use YouTube’s stream-health metrics to check the incoming signal.
Check XSplit’s computer load and encoder
While streaming, inspect XSplit’s CPU and GPU status. Close resource-heavy applications, including other capture, editing, gaming, or rendering tasks, and check whether the output stabilizes. If the local recording also stutters, prioritize this step before changing YouTube settings.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reduce the loaded component
- If CPU usage is high, XSplit suggests trying Video Processing Mode: Prefer GPU, if available.
- If GPU usage is high, try Video Processing Mode: Prefer CPU, if available.
- Test another available encoder when appropriate. Hardware and software encoders have different resource costs; there is no universally best choice.
- If load remains high, lower the stage resolution or frame rate and retest. These changes can reduce compute demand, but also reduce the output’s resolution or motion smoothness.
Make one adjustment at a time. Output properties—including codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate—depend on the selected output, XSplit version, and available hardware; a service may lock or override fields. Check the values actually shown for your YouTube output rather than assuming every setting is editable or identically named.
Test upload stability, not just peak speed
A speed test that looks good once does not prove your connection can sustain a live stream. In XSplit, open the selected output’s properties and run Test Bandwidth for that output/server. Assess both the average result and jitter: a high average does not guarantee consistency if jitter is also high.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Run the bandwidth test for the output you intend to use.
- Compare the result with your target video bitrate, leaving capacity for audio and other household or office traffic.
- Reduce the stream bitrate to a rate the connection can sustain, then test again.
- Repeat at the time and under the conditions you plan to stream; other active devices or changing provider conditions can affect upload.
If practical, briefly compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet connection to isolate a local wireless issue. A cable is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix: provider congestion, upstream routing, encoder load, or an excessive bitrate can still cause drops. If a connection test identifies an outbound internet problem, YouTube advises contacting your ISP.
Match the stream to YouTube’s ingest recommendations
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you selected. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommendations vary by codec and video mode, so do not treat one bitrate as universal.

| H.264 stream mode | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026—not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. YouTube provides different ranges for AV1 and H.265. Consult its live encoder settings for the codec and mode you actually use. If your available upload is unstable or insufficient, use a lower sustainable mode rather than forcing the recommended bitrate.
XSplit’s output documentation notes that available properties vary by output and service. Confirm the selected YouTube output’s actual codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval where exposed, then use YouTube’s stream-health messages to identify ingest problems.

Retest and read the diagnostics
Before an important stream, test with representative movement and audio, not just a static scene. Watch XSplit’s output indicators and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health during the test. YouTube’s health panel can show specific status or error instructions.
- If the encoded image looks poor or encoder CPU load is high, revisit capture sources, application load, and encoding settings.
- If the encoded signal looks healthy but the outbound signal is weak, rerun the connection test and investigate the network path; contact your ISP if the connection test indicates a problem.
- Change one setting at a time and observe whether both XSplit output and YouTube stream health improve.
- Keep XSplit updated, as YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using an up-to-date encoder.
See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance for its current diagnostic steps.
