Verdict: AWS Elemental MediaLive can encode and deliver live video in a managed cloud workflow, but it is not a turnkey 24/7 YouTube channel service. You must design the source, schedule, RTMP output, redundancy and billing configuration—and confirm YouTube’s current ingest settings. For uploaded-video loops without a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a simpler YouTube-specific alternative.
What MediaLive does—and what it does not
MediaLive is a managed cloud encoding service. A channel takes content from an input, processes it according to the channel configuration and sends it to configured outputs. It is an encoding stage in a larger workflow, not a complete channel operation that automatically supplies programming, builds a playlist, handles YouTube setup or guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast. See AWS’s channel workflow documentation.
A channel can have multiple inputs attached, but it ingests from one input at a time. A schedule can switch between inputs and can also carry image-overlay actions. AWS states that each channel has one schedule; actions can be added while the channel is stopped or running. That supports planned changes between sources, but does not by itself make a ready-made continuous playlist.
Can MediaLive keep a YouTube channel live 24/7?
Potentially, if you build and operate a workflow that continuously supplies valid content and sends a configured output to YouTube. The AWS material describes the channel, schedule and output building blocks; it does not establish a tested, end-to-end recipe for looping a VOD playlist to YouTube indefinitely. Treat continuous operation as an architecture you must validate, not a one-click MediaLive feature.

Choose a source that fits the programming
AWS distinguishes live inputs from VOD inputs. Its input matrix lists MP4 and TS file inputs as VOD-only, while RTMP Pull can be used for either live or VOD. Those distinctions matter if your plan is to keep a sequence of recorded documentaries on air: an accepted file input is not automatically a looping playlist source. Check the supported input types and design how content will be fed and switched before creating a channel. See AWS’s live and file input matrix.
Plan what happens between programs
Use the channel schedule to plan input switches and any overlays. Confirm that each source is available at the scheduled time and that the next source can take over as intended. If the source plan relies on files, external contribution, or a separate playlist system, that component is part of your operating design; MediaLive’s input and schedule capabilities alone do not establish that the complete workflow will loop recordings for you.

Connecting a MediaLive output to YouTube
MediaLive’s RTMP configuration is generic. The operator supplies the destination protocol, address, port, application name and stream name or key. AWS’s RTMP destination instructions describe those fields. The actual endpoint and stream settings must come from YouTube and should be checked against YouTube’s current instructions before you configure the channel; AWS’s RTMP guide is not a statement of YouTube’s current ingest requirements.
- Obtain the current YouTube ingest details. In YouTube’s live-control workflow, identify the server address and stream key for the broadcast you intend to run. Keep the key private. Do not assume an endpoint or setting from an older setup remains current.
- Configure the MediaLive output group. Choose RTMP and enter the destination details supplied by the downstream service. An RTMP output group has one output by default; the number of destinations depends on the channel pipeline configuration.
- Match the destination count to the channel class. AWS documents two destinations for a standard channel and one for a single-pipeline channel. The destination side must be prepared for the path or paths you configure.
- Validate the whole handoff. Check the channel state, source delivery, output destination and YouTube’s live status. A correctly filled RTMP form alone does not prove that the source is continuous or that YouTube is receiving the intended program.
Redundancy and interruptions
A standard MediaLive channel uses two independent pipelines to process the same content. This offers resilience within MediaLive, but only when the upstream source and downstream destination support the redundant paths. It is not a guarantee of end-to-end availability: source failures, network problems, destination configuration and YouTube remain outside that pipeline-level protection. AWS describes the design in its channel workflow documentation.

MediaLive also has configurable behavior for loss of video input. For RTMP output groups, it can send replacement content or pause delivery; with pause behavior, the underlying RTMP connection remains open. This is a response to source loss, not automatic recovery of the missing source. AWS notes that a running channel must always be encoding content. See AWS’s guidance on handling loss of video input.
How much does an always-on MediaLive channel cost?
There is no single useful 24/7 price without a specific configuration and region. AWS’s billing model depends on resource state and the inputs, outputs, codecs, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, channel class and add-on features you use. Consult the MediaLive billing guide and estimate the actual workflow in the AWS MediaLive pricing page.

- AWS says there is no separate channel charge while a channel is running, but its inputs and outputs are charged.
- A configured output can continue to incur a charge while paused if its channel is running.
- Idle channels and unattached or idle push inputs have their own billing rules; idle pull inputs are not charged.
- On-demand resource duration rounds up by the minute, with a 10-minute minimum, according to AWS’s pricing documentation.
AWS’s current pricing page advertises up to 75% savings versus on-demand for a 12-month reserved pricing offer. That is AWS’s maximum advertised saving, not a forecast or a guaranteed discount for a particular always-on channel. Compare the commitment against your expected usage and configuration.
Do not treat AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS one-hour event example as a MediaLive-only or continuous YouTube estimate: it describes a particular US East (N. Virginia) deployment with packaging and distribution services as well as MediaLive. Its total does not represent a generic 24/7 channel bill. See the deployment guide’s planning assumptions.

MediaLive versus an on-premises encoder
These options solve different operating constraints. MediaLive is managed cloud encoding billed by configured resources and their use. AWS positions its on-premises Elemental appliances for production facilities or remote venues, including cases where cloud latency is unacceptable or connectivity is limited. An appliance is an alternative category, not a required MediaLive accessory.
| Decision factor | MediaLive | On-premises Elemental |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | Managed cloud encoding; charges depend on running resources and configuration. | On-premises encoding appliance for production facilities or remote venues, as positioned by AWS. |
| Latency or connectivity | Cloud workflow; suitability depends on the network and latency needs. | AWS positions it for cases where cloud latency is unacceptable or connectivity is limited. |
| Cost comparison | Resource-based charges; estimate for the exact region and workflow. | A separate on-premises production setup; equalize workload, redundancy and distribution scope before comparing costs. |
| Resilience boundary | Dual pipelines can add MediaLive-level resilience when source and destination also support the paths. | End-to-end resilience depends on the complete production and delivery setup; the cited AWS material does not establish a universal availability comparison. |
AWS discusses its appliance positioning in its MediaLive FAQ and Elemental and MediaLive comparison. Neither category removes the need to plan source continuity, destination compatibility and platform operation.
When StreamNeo is the more direct fit
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a continuous YouTube stream rather than build a configurable cloud-encoding workflow, StreamNeo is the more direct option to try first: it runs from the cloud, accepts uploaded videos or playlists, and uses one flat price per slot for any upload quality up to 4K 60fps. It is YouTube-only and does not go live from a camera.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home, and the stream can recover automatically if YouTube drops it. Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of pooled storage per active slot, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details or start the free day.
