To have OBS start a YouTube lofi stream when you sign in, configure OBS and YouTube first, then launch OBS with the --startstreaming parameter. On Windows, add it to an OBS shortcut; on macOS, create an Automator app that runs OBS with the parameter. Starting a stream this way is not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service: power, internet, computer, or platform problems can still stop it.
Prepare and test the YouTube stream before automating it
Set up the stream manually first. Automatic launch can start the wrong scene, profile, or broadcast just as easily as the intended one, so confirm the complete setup before leaving it unattended.
- Configure OBS. Open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and let OBS account for your computer and network. Add the lofi video or image sources and audio. Check that the audio mixer meters move when the audio should be playing.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Select the YouTube service or server and enter the intended stream key. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use the correct YouTube broadcast and scene for the channel you intend to keep live.
- Test the actual output. Start a short test with the same video, audio, encoder settings, and network you plan to use continuously. Check YouTube’s stream health and listen to the audio; a moving OBS meter alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving usable sound.
- Review reconnect and YouTube controls. In OBS, review the Advanced setting for Automatic Reconnect. In YouTube’s stream settings, distinguish encoder auto-start and auto-stop from OBS’s own launch behavior. Test the combination you intend to use: OBS’s
--startstreamingtells OBS to start streaming, while YouTube’s controls govern its handling of the broadcast.
Choose encoder settings that can run reliably
Use the lowest resolution and frame rate that suit the lofi video and that your computer and upload connection can sustain. OBS notes that system demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; 60 fps can demand more than 30 fps. A static or slowly moving lofi scene often does not need a high frame rate.
| Setting | Practical starting point or guidance |
|---|---|
| Codec and bitrate | YouTube Help recommends H.264 examples of 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are recommendations, not universal requirements; choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. |
| Keyframe interval | YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency. |
| Rate control | YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate). |
| Ingestion protocol | YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. |
| Upload capacity | YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Leave additional room for normal variation rather than planning to use all available upload capacity. |
These figures are YouTube Help recommendations; the accessed pages do not display publication years. They are not a promise that a particular computer or internet connection will maintain a stream at those settings. Run the test at the intended settings and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Make OBS start streaming when you sign in
OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter starts streaming when OBS opens. The optional --minimize-to-tray parameter starts OBS minimized in the system tray. Add both only after confirming that the OBS profile, scene, and YouTube broadcast selection are correct.
Windows: add the parameters to an OBS shortcut
- Find the OBS shortcut you use to open OBS. Copy it first so you can keep a normal, non-streaming shortcut for manual use.
- Right-click the copied shortcut and choose Properties.
- In the Shortcut tab, find Target. Add a space after the executable path, then add
--startstreaming. To start minimized as well, add another space and--minimize-to-tray. Leave the existing executable path and quotation marks intact. - Apply the change and use this shortcut to test the launch. Confirm OBS opens the intended setup and that the YouTube broadcast begins before adding the shortcut to your sign-in startup process.
- Arrange for the configured shortcut to run when you sign in using the Windows startup method appropriate to your version. This is login startup, not necessarily startup before anyone signs in.
If you use Task Scheduler or another automated launcher instead of a shortcut, set its Start in working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. OBS warns that automated launches may otherwise fail to find the expected program files.

macOS: create an Automator launcher
- Open Automator and create a new application workflow.
- Add the Run Shell Script action.
- Enter
open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming. To start minimized too, append a space and--minimize-to-tray. - Save the workflow as an application and run it manually to test the result.
- Once tested, arrange for that application to open at login using the startup controls for your macOS version.
OBS documents the Automator launcher method; the exact login UI depends on the macOS version. This approach launches at user login, not necessarily immediately at computer boot before a user signs in.
Linux: identify the desktop environment first
The OBS launch parameter is documented, but the desktop-environment-specific login autostart steps are not established here. The precise setup depends on your distribution and desktop environment. Identify both before following a Linux autostart recipe; do not assume a Windows shortcut or macOS Automator workflow applies.

Understand what can interrupt a 24/7 stream
Automatic reconnect can help OBS recover from some dropped connections, but it does not prevent power loss, operating-system updates, hardware failure, or YouTube-side incidents. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its guidance recommends upload capacity above the stream’s total bitrate, including 20% headroom. A UPS may help locally powered equipment through some short power interruptions, but it cannot fix an internet outage or a platform problem.
Choose between one persistent broadcast and scheduled broadcasts
The OBS launch parameter starts OBS streaming; it does not decide whether YouTube should treat the channel as one persistent broadcast or as scheduled events. YouTube’s encoder auto-start and auto-stop settings affect broadcast handling. Choose the approach that matches your channel and test it before relying on unattended startup. For a scheduled event, YouTube advises having the encoder ready 15 minutes before the event; that lead time is event-preparation guidance, not a requirement for every persistent stream.

Plan separately for a replay
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as a reliable full replay. If preserving the audio or video matters, make a local recording or plan a shorter broadcast strategy; YouTube also recommends recording a local archive as backup.

- OBS opens but does not start the broadcast: Check that
--startstreamingis present after the executable path or after--argsin the macOS command. Test the configured shortcut or Automator app directly, and verify the selected YouTube service, stream key, and broadcast. - The automated launch fails to find OBS or its files: For Windows Task Scheduler or another automated launcher, set Start in to the directory containing
obs64.exe. For a shortcut, check that the existing Target path was preserved when adding parameters. - The stream starts but YouTube reports poor health or interruptions: Lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. Confirm CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe frequency, check upload stability, and leave the recommended headroom instead of using the connection’s full capacity.
- There is no lofi audio: Check the source’s playback, OBS audio mixer meters, and the audio received during a YouTube test. Do not leave an unattended stream until both picture and sound have been checked at the destination.
- OBS reconnects but the broadcast still ends: Automatic Reconnect only addresses some connection losses. Check the computer’s power and sleep/update behavior, local network, and YouTube broadcast settings; reconnect cannot guarantee recovery from every failure.
- The expected full-day replay is missing: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording or a planned shorter broadcast if a replay is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer at home to stay on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
