In OBS, open Settings > Advanced, enable Automatically Reconnect, and set the retry delay and maximum retries to cover the outages you expect. Then test the whole setup by briefly interrupting the internet connection. Reconnection can restore the encoder’s connection, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted playback or that YouTube will keep the same live event active.
Set OBS to reconnect automatically
OBS’s reconnect controls let the encoder try again after a dropped connection instead of relying on someone to restart it. Labels and behavior can vary by OBS release, so check the controls in the version installed on your computer; do not rely on a particular default.
- In OBS, open Settings > Advanced.
- Enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Set the retry delay and maximum retries to allow for the length of outage your connection may face. A shorter delay makes OBS try again sooner; more retries let it continue trying longer. The appropriate values depend on your connection and likely outage duration.
- Apply the settings, then run a controlled test before relying on the stream unattended.
Keep the stream within your connection’s limits
Automatic retries cannot compensate for an internet connection that repeatedly fails to carry the stream. OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of an unstable connection between the computer and the remote ingest server, or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Severe frame drops can end in disconnection. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide recommends investigating the network as well as OBS, hardware, and software issues.
- Leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Other people and devices using the network reduce the capacity available to the encoder.
- Choose a bitrate using YouTube’s encoding guidance for your selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and RTMPS where supported.
- Use a reliable connection and account for other network traffic, not just the speed shown in a single upload test.
Test the full recovery path before leaving it live
A successful OBS reconnect is only one part of recovery. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream, and it does not promise that every live event will remain the same event after an outage. Test what viewers actually see.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Start an unlisted or otherwise safe test stream and check the encoder output and YouTube Live Control Room.
- Briefly interrupt the internet connection, for example by disconnecting Ethernet, then restore it.
- Watch OBS as it retries. Check Live Control Room for stream health messages and confirm that the public watch page resumes or is available as expected.
- If the test fails, note whether OBS reports an encoder or connection error and whether YouTube still shows the stream as live.
YouTube advises testing a stream setup, previewing before going live, and monitoring stream health. An automatic archive is not a restart guarantee: YouTube says it automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but that does not establish what happens to a stream after an outage.
Troubleshoot a stream that will not recover
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or repeated disconnections | OBS connection status, chosen bitrate, and outbound network stability. | Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it; check available upload capacity and competing network use. OBS notes that the cause may be outside OBS itself. |
| OBS appears connected, but viewers cannot watch | Encoder output, YouTube Live Control Room health messages, and the watch page. | Use the encoder and Live Control Room together to locate where the failure occurs, then test the stream setup again. |
| Stream-start error with a third-party encoder | The stream URL and key in the encoder against the current details in YouTube Live Control Room. | Verify the key, update it in the encoder if needed, and confirm the encoder software is current. |
| Encoder looks healthy but the stream remains disconnected | Outbound internet connectivity and available upload capacity. | Test the outbound connection; if network problems persist, contact your internet service provider. |
| Failures continue despite a stable connection | Encoder errors, CPU load, and whether the encoder software is up to date. | Update the software and inspect CPU load and encoder output before changing stream settings. |
YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance similarly separates encoder problems from connection problems: inspect the encoder and CPU load, then test outbound internet if the encoder appears healthy.

When to use a backup encoder instead
OBS reconnect is the basic fix when one encoder should resume after a temporary outage. A second encoder is a more involved failover approach: it may help cover a primary encoder or connection failure, but it requires separate setup and testing. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that playback rolls over to the backup. This is a test recommendation, not a guarantee that every stream event or player will behave identically.
- Reconnect in OBS: one encoder and its local computer remain the operating setup; retry settings are simple to add, but recovery depends on that encoder and its internet connection becoming available again.
- Backup encoder: adds redundancy and setup and monitoring work; test that the viewer’s player rolls over as intended rather than assuming failover works.
YouTube’s encoder setup page lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. That listing does not establish how it handles an internet interruption, its current pricing or availability, or a recovery guarantee. YouTube’s encoder setup page is the reference for that description.
