How to Stream Portrait Video in a 16:9 FFmpeg YouTube Loop

Use FFmpeg to fit and center a portrait clip on a 16:9 YouTube Live canvas, preserve the whole image with padding, and check encoding and stream health.

To stream a portrait video in a landscape 16:9 YouTube Live frame, scale it down proportionally, center it on a 16:9 canvas, and pad the unused sides. This preserves the entire clip; setting FFmpeg’s -aspect 16:9 alone changes display-aspect metadata, not the video’s composition. A blurred background is an optional alternative if you want to fill the sides.

Choose how to use the space beside the portrait video

A portrait source and a landscape stream canvas have different shapes. The canvas can be 1920Ă—1080 or 1280Ă—720; the portrait clip is fitted inside it. Choose the framing based on whether you want to preserve every part of the source or fill the frame.

Method Original content Side regions Trade-off
Fit and pad Preserves the whole image Bars or a chosen solid color Simplest and most predictable framing
Fit over a blurred background Preserves the whole image Filled with an enlarged, blurred version of the clip More complex filtergraph; can make the image busier
Crop to fill Some image is lost No bars Use only if cropping is an intentional visual choice
Stretch to fill All image area remains, but proportions change No bars Distorts the portrait image

For a first setup, fit and pad. FFmpeg’s filter documentation describes the scale and pad filters, including padding to a 16:9 ratio.

Fit and center the portrait clip on a landscape canvas

  1. Choose the output dimensions. Use 1920x1080 for a 1080p canvas or 1280x720 for 720p. These are landscape frame dimensions; they do not change the shape of the source itself.
  2. Apply the scale, pad, and pixel-aspect filters. For 1920Ă—1080, use this video filter chain:
    scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,setsar=1

The scale filter’s decrease behavior fits the image within the target dimensions without enlarging either dimension past the canvas. pad creates the fixed-size frame and centers the scaled image, leaving equal padding on both sides. setsar=1 sets square sample aspect ratio.

  3. Put the chain in FFmpeg’s video filter option. With an input called portrait.mp4, the relevant command structure is:
ffmpeg -i portrait.mp4 -vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,setsar=1" [encoding and output options] output

This is a filter example, not a complete live-stream command: the encoding and output options depend on your source, chosen profile, audio, and YouTube stream destination. Check option compatibility against your installed FFmpeg version before using it. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains filter and output options.

  4. For 720p, change both target pairs. Replace 1920:1080 in the scale and pad filters with 1280:720; retain the centering expression and setsar=1.
  5. Inspect the result. Confirm the output frame has the chosen landscape dimensions, the portrait image is centered and uncropped, and the side padding looks as intended.

The exact filter options can vary by FFmpeg version; no particular local build is assumed here. FFmpeg’s documentation also notes that -aspect sets display aspect information. It does not resize or rearrange the encoded picture, and with stream copy it affects container-level aspect information rather than the aspect ratio stored in encoded frames. Use filters to create the landscape composition.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Optional: fill the sides with a blurred background

If bars do not suit the presentation, a common visual approach is to create a background layer by enlarging and blurring the same source, then place the unblurred, aspect-preserved portrait image over it on the landscape canvas. This requires building a filtergraph with separate background and foreground paths and combining them. The foreground still needs to fit within the 16:9 frame; cropping the background is a deliberate styling choice, not a reason to crop the main portrait image. Because the exact filtergraph depends on the input and FFmpeg build, verify the filter options in the installed version’s documentation before using a copy-and-paste command.

Set YouTube Live encoding options

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP and RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, square pixels, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings for its current requirements and recommendations.

H.264 profile listed by YouTube Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published figures on the guidance accessed in 2026, not measurements for your video or internet connection. The recommended bitrate changes with codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s current table for other profiles. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably, and test your upload before going live.

Audio and color settings, when relevant

For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps in its advanced settings. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Its guidance lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth for SDR. For HDR it specifies H.265 and 10-bit; AV1 is not supported for HDR in the cited guidance. Use these settings only when they match the audio and video you intend to send.

Loop the video and protect the stream key

This framing procedure does not by itself define a complete loop-to-YouTube command. The relevant FFmpeg and YouTube guidance establishes how to construct the frame and set encoder parameters, but does not settle the right looping syntax for every input, playlist, transition, or audio arrangement. Confirm loop behavior against the FFmpeg command-line documentation for your inputs before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Use the stream key and ingest destination provided in YouTube Studio when you configure the output, and do not publish or share the key. This guide does not include a live destination or a hard-coded key: keep credentials private and use the current YouTube Studio instructions for your channel.

Test the framing and connection before going live

  1. Check the generated output dimensions and sample aspect ratio, and verify that the portrait image is centered and not unintentionally cropped.
  2. Preview representative motion and audio. Confirm the sound is present and synchronized and that the chosen frame rate suits the source.
  3. Test the upload connection and ensure it can sustain the selected bitrate.
  4. Run a private or scheduled test stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance also advises testing with audio and motion similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health.

Troubleshoot common framing and stream problems

The YouTube preview is still portrait or square

Check that the output video actually passes through the scale-and-pad filter and that the pad dimensions match the selected landscape canvas. A display-aspect option alone does not make a new landscape composition.

The sides are uneven or the image is off-center

Use the centered pad offsets (ow-iw)/2 and (oh-ih)/2, and make sure the pad dimensions match the canvas dimensions. Inspect the output rather than relying only on metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The portrait image is cropped

Make sure the scale filter uses aspect-preserving fit behavior, such as force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease, before padding. A crop-to-fill design is different and deliberately removes part of the image.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The image looks stretched

Do not force the portrait source directly to 1920Ă—1080 or 1280Ă—720. Fit it proportionally, then pad the rest of the canvas. Keep square sample aspect ratio with setsar=1 where appropriate.

The stream buffers or loses stability

Compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendation for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test whether the upload connection can sustain it. A published recommendation is not a guarantee that a particular connection can carry that rate reliably.

The video is framed correctly but the stream does not start

Check the output destination and stream key in YouTube Studio, the selected transport and codec, and FFmpeg’s reported errors. Keep the key private. If the connection drops, confirm stream health and reconnect using YouTube’s current workflow rather than assuming a framing filter caused the failure.
