Start with the bitrate YouTube recommends for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Then compare it with the selected cloud service’s sustained outbound capacity on the actual route to YouTube—not just a headline “up to” speed. Check baseline versus burst bandwidth, per-flow restrictions, packet-processing capacity, lifecycle rules, and transfer billing separately. For a 24/7 stream, validate the setup under representative conditions and retain headroom.
What bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube stream need?
The encoder’s video bitrate is the starting target for the cloud machine that sends a contribution stream to YouTube. YouTube’s official live encoder settings guidance sets recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate; it recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR). Its current guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for H.264 1080p at 60 fps. Use the live guidance for the exact format you plan to send rather than treating those two examples as universal targets.
YouTube also advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health. A cloud provider’s published network limit is not proof that a particular VM will sustain that rate continuously on its public-internet path. Allow headroom for protocol overhead and workload variation, and test the real instance, region, route, and encoder settings.
Compare these limits, not just the advertised maximum
| What to compare | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder target | YouTube’s current recommended bitrate for the precise codec, resolution, and frame rate | A provider’s Gbps headline is hard to assess until you know the stream’s Mbps requirement. |
| Sustained external egress | Published capacity or expected throughput for the exact VM size, region, and destination route | Maximums and expected figures are not necessarily guaranteed or sustained internet performance. |
| Per-flow limit | Whether one encoder connection can use the VM’s nominal capacity | A single stream is one flow; per-flow limits can differ from instance-wide limits. |
| Baseline and burst | Baseline rate, credit rules, and how long a burst can last | Temporary burst capacity cannot be treated as a 24/7 operating rate. |
| Workload effects | CPU and packet-processing headroom, network congestion, and observed stream health | A network ceiling alone does not establish the performance of the complete encoder workload. |
| Continuity behavior | Restart, quota, maintenance, and recovery rules for the specific product | Always-on operation depends on lifecycle behavior as well as bandwidth. |
| Transfer billing | Current egress charges and quotas for the service, region, and account | Network speed and accumulated data transfer are different measures and may be billed differently. |
How the major cloud providers describe outbound bandwidth
Google Cloud Compute Engine
Google Cloud documents both VM-level and flow-level egress constraints. Its current Compute Engine documentation, accessed in 2026, gives a maximum external egress rate per unique 5-tuple flow of 3 Gbps for most machine series, with H3 and H4D documented at 1 Gbps per flow. These are flow ceilings, not a promise that every VM will sustain that rate to YouTube. Overall external egress caps, project-level internet-egress quotas, machine type, and destination routing also matter. Check the current limits for the exact VM and project.

Amazon EC2
AWS documents bandwidth by instance type and notes that available throughput depends on instance size and other factors. Many instances with 16 or fewer vCPUs have a baseline bandwidth and can use network I/O credits for temporary bursts. AWS says those bursts typically last 5–60 minutes, depending on instance size. For continuous streaming, compare the baseline and relevant internet-gateway and single-flow constraints for the selected instance; do not size a 24/7 encoder around a burst or an “up to” number.
Microsoft Azure
Azure measures allocated network bandwidth on outbound VM traffic and aggregates traffic across the VM’s network interfaces. Accelerated networking may help a VM reach its allocation, but it does not raise that allocation. Azure VM-size pages describe expected outbound throughput and caution that upper limits are guidance; actual results depend on congestion, workload, and configuration. For family-specific context, the 2026 Microsoft Learn table lists expected network bandwidth of 2,000 Mbps for Standard_D2as_v4 and 40,000 Mbps for Standard_D96as_v4. Those are examples, not guarantees for a chosen deployment.

Calculate transfer volume separately from throughput
Bandwidth capacity is a rate, such as Mbps. Transfer billing counts accumulated data, often over a billing period. One does not tell you the price of the other: use the provider’s current calculator or account pricing for the exact service, region, and terms.
For a rough decimal-volume estimate, multiply the stream bitrate in Mbps by 0.45 to estimate GB per day, before protocol overhead. A 14 Mbps feed works out to about 6.3 GB per day by that calculation. Actual billed transfer can differ because of overhead, ancillary traffic, and provider billing rules. This estimate is not a transfer price.

Check service continuity as well as VM capacity
Confirm how the particular service handles restarts, quotas, maintenance, and recovery. For example, Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation says a channel may be restarted after 24 hours in a streaming state other than stopped or stopping. That rule applies to that managed API; it is not a general limit on Compute Engine VMs or YouTube live streams.
Also distinguish the cloud encoder’s contribution stream from delivery to viewers. In an ordinary YouTube workflow, the VM sends one feed to YouTube, and YouTube handles viewer delivery. If your architecture separately encodes or distributes a channel to viewers, that is additional work with its own capacity and cost requirements. AWS describes MediaLive and MediaPackage outputs delivered through CloudFront as a separate architecture.

A practical comparison and validation process
- Fix the stream format. Choose codec, resolution, and frame rate, then look up YouTube’s current bitrate recommendation for that combination. Record the encoder target and use RTMPS and CBR as recommended in YouTube’s live guidance.
- Identify the exact cloud configuration. Record the provider, VM size, region, operating environment, and route used to reach YouTube. A broad service-family maximum is not enough.
- Read the constraints behind the headline. Check sustained or baseline egress, per-flow limits, burst credits and duration, external-route restrictions, project quotas, and any packet-processing caveats.
- Check continuity rules. Look up restart, maintenance, quota, and recovery behavior for the exact managed service or VM arrangement. Do not apply one product’s lifecycle rule to another.
- Estimate transfer and price independently. Estimate the stream’s data volume, then check current region- and account-specific egress pricing and quotas. Do not infer a bill from a Gbps or Mbps limit.
- Run a representative test. Use the planned encoder settings and network path; test long enough to expose instability rather than relying on a brief speed result. YouTube recommends a speed test to test upload bitrate and advises monitoring stream health.
- Decide using sustained results and headroom. Select a configuration that maintains the required feed without depending on temporary burst capacity, and retain room for overhead and ordinary variation.
When managing the cloud VM is more work than the stream
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded documentaries looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: it keeps the stream running from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live encoder. See StreamNeo for details.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
