Best Low-Power Raspberry Pi Setup for a 24/7 YouTube Stream in India

A Pi 4 is a strong starting point for a modest H.264 YouTube stream, but the right setup depends on whether you encode live video or loop a pre-encoded file. Here’s how to choose, configure and measure it.

A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is a sensible low-power starting point for a modest 24/7 YouTube stream when your workflow can use its hardware H.264 encoder. Pair it with the official 5 V/3 A USB-C supply, microSD boot media, wired Ethernet where practical and a lean Linux/FFmpeg setup. If you are looping an already encoded video, investigate stream-copying or remuxing rather than encoding it again. A Pi 5 is also an option, but it uses software H.264 encoding. Either way, measure the complete system at the wall before estimating electricity cost or making claims about continuous reliability.

Can a Raspberry Pi stream to YouTube 24/7?

Yes, a Raspberry Pi can serve as the encoder or playback source for a continuous YouTube stream, provided the specific workload, power supply, network connection and software are configured and tested for sustained operation. The board specifications alone do not establish whole-system power consumption or prove that a particular setup will remain live without interruption.

Start by identifying what you are streaming. A live camera or scene has to be encoded for YouTube; a pre-encoded video loop may be passed through with stream-copy/remuxing, avoiding unnecessary re-encoding when the pipeline supports it. That distinction affects CPU load, heat and the model that makes sense.

Which Raspberry Pi is best for a 24/7 YouTube stream?

Model Encoding path When it fits Things to check
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Hardware H.264 encoding is available in supported camera/libav workflows. Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation describes hardware H.264 encoding through its libav backend when present. A practical default for a modest H.264 pipeline where limiting CPU use is a priority. Choose a conservative resolution and frame rate, then validate the actual workload and thermal behavior.
Raspberry Pi 5 Software H.264 encoding. Raspberry Pi’s 2026 performance paper reports real-time 1080p30 in low-latency mode under its tested settings; results depend on preset, bitrate and workload. See the Raspberry Pi 2026 performance paper. Consider it when a newer platform or additional CPU capacity is useful and you have verified the chosen encode settings. Software encoding uses CPU resources; provide suitable power and cooling, and test sustained operation.

Choose based on the whole pipeline, not the model number alone: source type, encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, peripherals, measured wall energy and backup needs all matter. Raspberry Pi’s bare-board figures are not a measurement of a complete streaming build.

Build a Pi setup for continuous streaming

1. Match the power supply to the board

For a Pi 4, Raspberry Pi recommends a 5 V, 3 A (15 W) USB-C supply. For a Pi 5, the official recommendation is a 27 W USB-C supply; Raspberry Pi documentation describes 5 V at 5 A for full peripheral capability. The official getting-started guidance says, “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply.” See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation.

Allow for voltage loss in the cable and power used by connected peripherals. A supply’s rated capacity is not the same as the system’s measured consumption.

2. Choose boot storage

A microSD card is a common boot option; USB storage is also supported. The board does not include onboard storage. Keep the operating system and streaming files on reliable storage, and retain a separate copy of recordings or configuration you would not want to lose.

3. Prefer a stable wired connection

For a fixed installation, use Ethernet where practical. Make sure your upstream capacity exceeds the configured stream bitrate by enough to accommodate variation, then test upload stability over time. No particular Indian ISP speed or performance is guaranteed by the board choice; service quality depends on your location and connection.

4. Keep the software path lean

Use a minimal Raspberry Pi OS/Linux installation and a supervised FFmpeg/libav or suitable camera pipeline. Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation explains that rpicam-vid can use libav to save or stream media. Configure the process to start on boot and restart after an unexpected exit, then rehearse recovery rather than assuming it will work.

5. Plan cooling and outage recovery

Sustained software encoding, especially on a Pi 5, warrants attention to temperature and cooling. Also decide which interruptions you need to ride through: a board restart, router outage or mains failure require different recovery plans. If using a UPS, measure the complete load, include the router or modem if they need backup, and choose a runtime target based on the outage window and UPS efficiency. No UPS capacity or runtime can be prescribed without those measurements.

Configure YouTube’s incoming stream settings

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, constant bitrate (CBR) and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a keyframe interval no greater than four seconds. It recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 3 Mbps at 720p30. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not proof that a particular Pi or internet connection can sustain those settings.

YouTube recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the server address and stream key displayed in your YouTube Live Control Room, and keep the key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube rather than continuing to use a compromised key.

Begin at a modest resolution and bitrate suitable for your source and upload connection. Check dropped frames, CPU load and temperature during an extended test. Increase settings only after the stream remains stable; a higher resolution is not an improvement if it causes encoding or network failures.

Estimate electricity cost in India from a wall measurement

Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation lists typical active current of 600 mA for a Pi 4 Model B bare board. The documentation marks such figures approximate and notes that peripherals, including USB devices and HATs, can raise system use. It is a reference figure, not the wall draw of a complete streaming rig.

Measure the assembled setup at the wall, including any peripherals that will remain on. Then calculate:

Average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per 30-day month

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

Multiply the result by your applicable electricity tariff. Household tariffs vary by state, distribution company and usage slab, so there is no single defensible monthly rupee figure for every Indian reader. If a router, modem or UPS will also run continuously, include its measured consumption in the total.

Test reliability before relying on a 24/7 stream

A 24/7 target is an operating goal, not something established by a board’s power rating or encoder capability. Before leaving the stream unattended, test the assembled setup under the settings you intend to use and verify what happens when the process stops, the network drops and power is interrupted. Confirm that the encoder reconnects using the current YouTube stream key and that your startup/restart configuration works after a reboot.

  • Confirm stable encoding at the chosen resolution, frame rate and bitrate.
  • Observe CPU load and temperature during a sustained run.
  • Verify upload stability and check YouTube’s stream health indicators.
  • Test process restart and boot behavior, rather than assuming a service manager is configured correctly.
  • Measure the complete system’s wall consumption and test any UPS with the actual load.

Or let it run in the cloud
