Keep that computer awake and connected, or move the streaming job to a compatible standalone encoder or cloud service that can keep running independently. YouTube needs an active feed; a scheduled stream, archive, or auto-start setting cannot replace one.
Why turning off the computer stops the stream
In an encoder-based broadcast, software on your computer captures or plays the video and sends it to YouTube. When that computer shuts down, the encoder stops sending content, so YouTube no longer receives the live feed. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube’s encoder guide explains the workflow.
The remedy depends on what you are streaming. If the source is gameplay, a screen capture, a camera routed through the computer, or a playlist played by desktop software, the computer running that software must stay on unless you move the encoding or playback job elsewhere.
Choose the fix that matches your stream

YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming methods; encoders are suited to workflows such as gameplay, overlays, and external audio or video hardware. For a pre-recorded playlist, choose a setup that can play and send that media without the computer if the computer must be off. For a live camera or screen feed, the independent encoder must still receive that live source.

For a documented hardware example, see YouTube’s encoder list, which describes AJA HELO Plus’s no-computer scheduled playback for prerecorded media and names AWS Elemental MediaLive as a service example. These are options to evaluate, not a guarantee of fit for your equipment or account.
Keep the current computer-based stream running
- Prevent shutdown and sleep. While the broadcast is active, keep the computer that runs the encoder powered on and awake. Check its operating-system power settings so sleep, hibernation, or a scheduled shutdown does not interrupt the stream.
- Keep the encoder open and transmitting. Confirm the streaming application is running and its status indicates that it is connected or sending. Closing the application or stopping its transmission also removes the feed YouTube needs.
- Verify the event and encoder connection. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the intended event and check the preview before going live. In the encoder, verify the YouTube server URL and the correct stream key; YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s “password and address.” Treat it as a credential and do not share it publicly. - Check upload capacity and stability. YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. If other devices or uploads compete for bandwidth, reduce that load or use a more reliable connection. Details are in YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test before the event and monitor it. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Confirm the preview, check audio and video, and monitor the broadcast rather than assuming that a scheduled page means the encoder is sending.
What scheduling, archives, and DVR can—and cannot—do
A scheduled event creates a page and lets you prepare, but the encoder still has to connect and send the live video. Auto-start and auto-stop settings control stream start and stop behavior; they do not keep the encoder process alive when its host computer powers down. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. An archive is a replay of a stream that happened; it does not continue the live broadcast after the encoder stops. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, which is a playback limitation rather than a way to keep a feed alive. Troubleshoot a stream that still stops
- The stream ends as soon as the computer powers off: That is expected if the encoder runs on that computer. Keep it on, or move the encoder and playback job to an independent compatible device or service.
- The computer stays on, but YouTube loses the feed: Check whether the encoder is still running, then inspect the network connection and available upload bandwidth. YouTube notes that network disruption can break a stream; leave the recommended upload headroom.
- The scheduled watch page is available but shows no live video: A page is not a video source. Start the encoder with the event’s correct server URL and stream key, then check the Live Control Room preview.
- The stream key or destination may be wrong: Confirm the encoder is configured for the intended YouTube stream. If you change or reset the key in YouTube, update the encoder with the current one.
- The replay exists, but the channel is no longer live: The archive records the broadcast; it does not resume or extend it. Check the encoder and feed rather than archive or DVR settings.
- You want to shut down the computer, but your source is live gameplay or a camera: The independent setup still needs access to that live source. Choose hardware or hosted encoding designed for the input; a service cannot encode a source it does not receive.
