You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from a low-power PC by sending a simple, low-resolution feed from OBS to YouTube Live Control Room. Start with 720p at 30 fps and H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 3 Mbps, use RTMPS, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then test the actual PC, connection and content before going public. This is a practical starting point, not a guarantee: a continuous local stream still depends on your computer, electricity and internet connection staying available.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. Verify the channel and check for any live-stream restrictions; first-time livestreaming enablement can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A PC that can run OBS with your chosen scene and output settings. OBS does not define a universal minimum CPU for this workload, and meeting its system requirements does not guarantee adequate streaming performance.
- A stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity for the encoder bitrate plus headroom for normal network variation and other household traffic.
- OBS Studio, downloaded from its official site. YouTube lists OBS as a free, open-source encoder.
- Video and audio you have the right to broadcast. A file looping in OBS is not automatically permitted by copyright or YouTube policy.
Set up the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel can go live. If you have never livestreamed, allow up to 24 hours for enablement.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s walkthrough is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the YouTube service if available, and enter the key; if configuring a custom server, enter the URL as well. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or share it. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Build a lightweight scene. Add only the sources needed for the broadcast, such as a video file, an audio source, a still image or simple text. Animated browser overlays, many sources and filters add work even when the video is prerecorded. Keep the scene uncomplicated on a modest PC.
- Choose conservative output settings. In OBS, open Settings → Output and set output mode and encoder options, then open Settings → Video to choose resolution and frame rate. Use the starter values in the next section, adjusting only after a sustained test.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Start streaming in OBS and confirm YouTube receives the feed. Review stream health and any messages in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
Use settings a modest PC and connection can sustain
A reasonable first test is 720p at 30 fps using H.264 at YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate of 3 Mbps. If the PC and network remain stable with the same kind of scene and audio you intend to use, test 1080p30 at the recommended 5 Mbps. These figures are YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendations, not an ISP plan specification or a promise of performance on a particular PC.

For YouTube’s current encoder guidance, use RTMPS where your encoder supports it, set rate control to CBR, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. H.264 is a compatibility-first choice for an initial setup, but it is not necessarily the most efficient choice for every PC. RTMPS encrypts the transmission to YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
The bitrate is the encoded video sent to YouTube, not the total upload speed your home needs. Check your actual upload capacity and leave room for network fluctuations and other devices. A brief speed test is useful, but a sustained stream test is more revealing than a single reading. Indian upload speeds and service reliability vary by location and connection; no one nationwide ISP plan or speed can be inferred from these encoder numbers.

Reduce load if the PC struggles
Hardware encoding can reduce the CPU work of encoding video if OBS supports an encoder on your machine. It does not eliminate scene composition or the need to test the whole workload. Performance and image quality vary by encoder generation; older hardware encoders may produce lower quality at the same bitrate.
- Lower output resolution before adding hardware or increasing bitrate.
- Use 30 fps instead of 60 fps if the machine cannot sustain the higher frame rate.
- Remove unnecessary animated or browser sources and filters, and simplify the scene.
- Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as an initial guide, not as proof that a 24/7 run will be stable.
OBS recommends reducing resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes when performance is poor. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains these options. Test your actual machine: there is no single CPU specification that guarantees a particular scene, encoder and output will run well.

Run a representative test before going public
- Set the broadcast to private or unlisted for testing, as appropriate for your channel and intended workflow.
- Use the same media, audio, scene, resolution, frame rate and bitrate planned for the public stream.
- Let the test run long enough to expose heat, dropped frames, network variation or other issues likely to appear during an unattended broadcast. A short successful connection alone does not establish that a PC or home connection can stay live indefinitely.
- Check that audio is present, at a suitable level and synchronized, and that motion and image quality look acceptable in YouTube’s preview.
- Monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room. YouTube documents monitoring, but it does not guarantee that a home PC, power supply or ISP will remain available continuously.
- Only after the test is satisfactory, switch to the intended public or scheduled workflow and arrange a way to notice and recover from a dropped encoder or connection.
Plan for archives, copyright and continuous operation
One 24-hour session is not a dependable complete archive
YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. Do not count on one uninterrupted 24-hour session being available afterward as a complete video. If an archive matters, plan a separate recording or a broadcast workflow that meets your archive needs. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes continuous broadcasts as ongoing broadcast resources, including a use case where a separate interview broadcast can be created from part of a continuous feed without stopping that feed.
Looping a video does not grant permission to use it
Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines, Terms and copyright rules. YouTube identifies matching another copyrighted live broadcast and an active copyright strike as reasons livestreaming may be restricted. Use original or properly licensed video and music, and do not assume that repeating a file is allowed merely because OBS can play it continuously. Account for the dependencies of running locally
With OBS on your PC, the stream depends on that computer, your home network and electricity. Consider how you will monitor the broadcast and restart the encoder or reconnect if something fails. There is no universal India-wide estimate for local broadband reliability, power interruptions, electricity cost or the UPS runtime needed: those depend on your location, equipment and measured power draw. Measure the PC and router and decide how long you need backup power before choosing a UPS.
Troubleshoot common failures

When to use a local PC or cloud playout
OBS is the local-encoder route: it gives you control over a PC-based scene and avoids paying for a cloud playout service, but it depends on your computer, connection and power. Cloud playout can suit prerecorded videos when you do not want a dedicated PC running; YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre for this kind of use. The available sources do not establish Gyre’s current India availability, price or plan limits, so check those directly before choosing it. Cloud playout for prerecorded media is not automatically a fit for a live camera or a real-time computer-generated feed.
