For a VPS-based YouTube stream, capture FFmpeg’s standard error in your service manager or configure an FFmpeg report file. Use routine logs for ongoing operations and a more detailed report when diagnosing a problem. Then check YouTube Live Control Room separately: FFmpeg output shows what the local process is doing, but only YouTube’s stream-health status indicates what its ingest system is receiving.
Choose where FFmpeg output should go
FFmpeg writes log messages to standard error (stderr) by default, according to the FFmpeg command-line documentation. That means you can either capture stderr through the VPS service or supervisor that runs FFmpeg, or ask FFmpeg to create a report file.

There is no universal service-log command or retention setting for an unspecified VPS: those depend on its distribution, service manager, and configuration. Confirm how your chosen setup handles stderr rather than assuming logs persist or rotate automatically.
Capture stderr through the VPS service
For a continuous stream, service-managed stderr is often a practical routine-log destination because FFmpeg already writes there. Configure the service or supervisor that launches the process to retain stderr or send it to a managed file. The exact UI, directives, and retrieval commands vary by host; use the documentation for your particular distribution and service manager.

- Identify the service or supervisor that starts FFmpeg and determine where it sends the process’s stderr.
- Configure that destination to retain the output you need, with access controls and a retention policy appropriate for a continuously running process.
- Start or restart the service, then confirm that new FFmpeg messages appear in the expected destination.
- After a restart, check the destination again. Verify that you can retrieve recent output and that retention or rotation behaves as intended.
Do not treat “the service is running” as proof that logging is working. Check for actual FFmpeg lines at the destination, and make sure a managed file or journal will not grow without bound.
Write an FFmpeg report file
Detailed, timestamped diagnostic report
Use -report when investigating an issue and you want FFmpeg’s full command line and log output in a report:
ffmpeg -report -i INPUT [encoding options] -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'This is an illustrative command: substitute your input, encoding options, output format, and YouTube destination. FFmpeg names the report with the program and a timestamp in the current directory. The directory must be writable. Because -report implies debug verbosity, the report can be much noisier than routine operational output; plan for file access and retention before using it on a long-running service.
Choose the report filename and level
FFmpeg’s FFREPORT environment variable can set a filename and verbosity. The manual documents this example, where level 32 is the numeric alias for info:

FFREPORT='file=ffreport.log:level=32' ffmpeg -i INPUT [encoding options] -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'The options are separated by colons, so special characters and delimiters in values need escaping as described in the FFmpeg documentation. FFREPORT parsing errors are not fatal and do not appear in the report. After launching FFmpeg, verify that the intended file was actually created and contains output. A fixed filename is convenient in an example, but a production setup still needs suitable rotation and retention.
Set useful verbosity and progress output
FFmpeg’s documented default log level is info. The available levels range from quiet through panic, fatal, error, warning, info, verbose, debug, and trace. For example, the manual documents combining a level with line prefixes:
-loglevel level+datetime+infoThe level flag prefixes lines with their severity, while time or datetime adds time information. Keep routine logs readable; use debug-level output for diagnosis when its additional volume is useful, not as an automatic requirement for every 24/7 run.
Progress and diagnostic messages are different signals. FFmpeg’s -stats option logs encoding progress at info level and is on by default. Its -progress option emits program-friendly progress information. These can help show what the local process is doing, but neither proves YouTube has accepted or distributed the feed. Protect the YouTube stream key
YouTube’s stream key is sensitive routing and acceptance information: YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s “password and address.” The encoder setup workflow provides the stream URL and key for the encoder. Anyone who obtains the key may be able to send a feed to that stream, so treat it as a secret. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Do not include an unredacted key in screenshots, public logs, support requests, or shared command examples.
- Be careful when saving full-command reports:
-reportrecords the command line, which may contain the stream key. - Avoid putting the key in shell history or other records that are more widely accessible than necessary.
- When sharing logs, redact the key and any URL segment that contains it.
Check YouTube’s stream health separately
Open Live Control Room while streaming and inspect its stream-health status and messages. YouTube says stream status includes specific error messages with instructions, and that you can check stream health and analytics there while live. Consult YouTube’s stream metrics guidance alongside your VPS logs.
Use both views to narrow down the problem:
- FFmpeg reports an input, encoding, or output error: investigate the corresponding local process, media input, encoding configuration, or connection attempt.
- FFmpeg appears to be progressing but YouTube reports a health problem: follow the specific Live Control Room message and check the destination and encoder configuration. Local progress alone is not evidence of healthy ingest.
- Neither side shows enough detail: confirm that stderr or the report is being captured, then gather a controlled diagnostic report without exposing the stream key.
Check encoder settings and run a preflight
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Its supported video codec options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps; audio options for RTMP/RTMPS include AAC or MP3. Use the official bitrate table for your ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
Before relying on the feed, select quality appropriate to the available upload connection, run a speed test, and test with representative audio and motion. While live, monitor Live Control Room for health changes and its error messages. These checks help distinguish a local encoding or connection issue from a destination-side ingest problem.

Plan for logs and long broadcasts
A 24/7 process can produce a substantial amount of output, especially with debug verbosity. Decide how much routine history you need, who can read it, and how old logs will be retained or rotated. Verify those behaviors in the actual VPS service setup; neither an FFmpeg report option nor stderr capture by itself establishes a host-wide retention policy.
Also distinguish a continuously running broadcast from YouTube’s archive guidance. YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that this statement guarantees an uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be archived under the same condition; see YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Common logging and stream-health problems
No log file appears
With default settings, FFmpeg writes to stderr, not necessarily to a file. If using -report or FFREPORT, check the current working directory, write permissions, and whether the intended option or environment variable reached the FFmpeg process. FFREPORT parsing failures are not fatal, so verify file creation rather than relying on startup success.
The report is too large or noisy
-report implies debug verbosity. Use it for diagnosis rather than assuming it is suitable for continuous routine logging. For an ongoing service, use a readable operational level and configure host-appropriate retention and rotation.

Logs stop being available after a restart
Check whether the service manager retains stderr across process restarts and where it stores prior output. If writing to a file, confirm that the service can write to the path after restart and that rotation or cleanup has not removed the history you need.
FFmpeg shows progress, but YouTube reports an error
Progress describes local work, not successful ingest. Read the specific Live Control Room health message, then compare it with the FFmpeg output and verify the encoder settings and stream destination.
A shared log exposes the stream key
Redact the key before sharing any command or report. Because reports can contain the full command line, inspect them for secrets as well as error messages.
