Use FFmpeg’s drawbox and drawtext filters to place a ticker band over your video and move the text across it. Because the filter changes video pixels, FFmpeg must encode the video rather than stream-copy it. YouTube’s stream settings are a separate part of the setup: they determine how FFmpeg sends the finished audio/video feed to YouTube.
What you need before you start
- An FFmpeg build with the
drawtextfilter and its font support. Builds differ, so verify the binary you will actually use rather than assuming the filter is included. - A font file on the machine running FFmpeg. Use its real path in the filter; font discovery and default fonts vary by operating system and build.
- A source video or other continuous video input, plus audio if your stream needs it.
- A YouTube Live event prepared in YouTube Studio, with its server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or articles.
The FFmpeg filter documentation describes drawtext as drawing text, or text from a specified file, over video using the libfreetype library. Check the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version when an option or expression is rejected.
Check your FFmpeg build and font
Run these checks on the host that will run the continuous stream:
ffmpeg -filters— confirm thatdrawtextappears in the filter list.ffmpeg -h filter=drawtext— inspect the options supported by this build, includingtextfile,reload, and the text-width expression used by your command.- Choose a known font file and confirm that the path is readable by the account running FFmpeg. If the filter reports font or FreeType errors, use a compatible build and a valid font path before troubleshooting the ticker expression.
Do not assume every packaged FFmpeg binary has identical filter capabilities or font configuration. A quick short test encode is a safer way to validate the filter than discovering a build limitation after the live event begins.

Build and animate the ticker
Use a background band and a moving text layer
A practical filter chain draws a translucent band near the bottom of the frame, then renders white text over it. The following is an illustrative filter fragment, not a tested end-to-end command. Replace the font path, ticker-file path, and dimensions or placement to suit your video:
drawbox=x=0:y=h-64:w=w:h=64:[email protected]:t=fill,drawtext=fontfile=/path/to/font.ttf:textfile=/path/to/ticker.txt:reload=1:fontsize=32:fontcolor=white:y=h-48:x=w-mod(t*180,w+text_w)Here, w and h refer to the video frame dimensions. The box is 64 pixels high; the text is positioned 48 pixels above the frame bottom. The x expression begins at the right edge and decreases as time passes, moving the text left. The number 180 is an example speed in pixels per second, not a universal recommendation. The mod expression wraps the text so it re-enters after leaving the frame. Adjust the speed, band, font size, and spacing after previewing at your actual output resolution.
Expressions and quoting are sensitive to the shell and FFmpeg filter syntax. In the fragment, the comma in the expression is escaped for the filter parser; the escaping required can differ with the full command and shell. Validate the complete command locally. If your installed version does not accept text_w, consult its filter help for the supported text-width variable and use that instead.

Choose how to supply the ticker copy
- Fixed copy: use
text=indrawtext. This is straightforward for simple text, but punctuation, quotes, and shell metacharacters can make command-line escaping awkward. - Changeable copy: use
textfile=/path/to/ticker.txt. The file should contain UTF-8 text. Withreload=1, FFmpeg rereads it at a frame interval; check the installed version’s help for the exact reload behavior and setting syntax.
When changing a text file during a live process, write the replacement to a temporary file and rename it over the target atomically. Rewriting the live file in place risks FFmpeg reading it partway through an update and displaying incomplete text. The reload interval also affects how soon an edit appears.

There is no universally correct ticker speed, font size, placement, or band height. Test the actual programme content and ticker on representative playback devices. Check that the message is readable against the video, that it does not cover important documentary imagery or subtitles, and that the wraparound gap is acceptable. If you need a deliberate pause or a seamless-looking cycle, tune the expression and period deliberately; the simple modulo pattern does not add a dwell time.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Prepare the event: open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and obtain the stream URL and stream key for the event. Keep the key private.
- Configure the output: use the server URL and key in FFmpeg’s output configuration. Prefer RTMPS where available. Keep credentials out of published scripts and avoid logging a command line that exposes the key.
- Encode video: apply the filter to the video stream and encode it. A filter changes pixels, so
-c:v copycannot carry the filtered result. Select an encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your host and upload connection can sustain. - Handle audio deliberately: map the intended audio input and encode it in a format supported by YouTube. Do not accidentally omit audio or map an unintended track when adding the video filter.
- Preview and verify: start FFmpeg before starting the event, wait for YouTube’s preview, and inspect the ticker’s legibility and movement, audio, and stream-health messages. Test with audio and motion representative of the planned feed.
For a real command, substitute your own input, font and ticker paths, output dimensions, encoder settings, and YouTube credentials. The filter fragment above intentionally is not a complete command: continuous-feed input and audio mapping depend on how your source is provided, and credentials should not be embedded in a publicly visible example.

Choose YouTube encoder settings for the feed
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Check its current encoder settings and bitrate tables for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate from a different configuration.
For scale, YouTube’s current table gives 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for H.264 at 1080p30. That figure applies to that specific row, not to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and enough total outbound capacity for primary and backup streams if you use both. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or configuration will work.

A working filter does not by itself make a feed continuous. The process needs a reliable host, a continuing input, sufficient compute for video encoding, and a stable connection. Decide how the process will be monitored and restarted if FFmpeg exits; the appropriate supervisor and recovery design depend on the host and are not specified by the filter documentation.

- Monitor FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health for disconnects, encoder errors, and audio/video problems.
- Test the full intended duration and a representative source before relying on an unattended stream.
- Make a controlled ticker-file update during testing so you can confirm reload timing and atomic replacement.
- Keep a recovery route for an ended or disconnected encoder process, and verify what YouTube shows after a reconnect.
Troubleshooting
FFmpeg says the drawtext filter or font is unavailable
The installed build may not include the filter or compatible font support, or the configured font path may be invalid. Confirm the filter with ffmpeg -filters, inspect ffmpeg -h filter=drawtext, and point fontfile to a readable font file supported by that build.
The command fails on commas, colons, or quotes
Filter expressions, file paths, and shell syntax have separate escaping rules. Start with a minimal local test, then add the band, text source, and motion expression one at a time. Escape expression separators as required by the filter parser and quote the complete filter according to the shell you are using.
The ticker is missing, clipped, or hard to read
Check that the text file is readable and non-empty, the chosen font renders its characters, and the output dimensions match the assumptions in the position expression. Preview the output and adjust the band, text placement, font size, color, and speed for the target frame size and content.

The text does not update or appears incomplete
Confirm that the filter uses textfile and a reload setting supported by your FFmpeg version. Replace the file atomically rather than editing it in place, and allow for the configured reload interval before expecting the change to appear.
YouTube does not receive a healthy stream
Recheck the event’s server URL and private stream key, the selected ingest protocol, encoder settings, and outbound bandwidth. Use the bitrate row for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; verify the keyframe interval and CBR configuration; then test the preview and review YouTube’s stream-health messages before starting the event.
Video works but audio is absent or wrong
Review the input and output stream mapping and confirm that the intended audio stream is encoded as AAC or MP3. A video filter does not select or repair the audio track automatically.
